Another HIV breakthrough...why is this not a thing of the past?

They need to find a way of paying scientists and doctors, as well as pharmaceutical companies who develop these things. So there is more incentive to go after them.
Perhaps companies who make something that is not patentable can receive tax breaks or something to allow them to continue the work. Whoever cures HIV officially, everyone buys 1 share of the company. Something. Right now a lot of work seems to get sidelined because the work is not patentable.

http://www.plospathogens.org/article...l.ppat.1003587

Stable integration of HIV proviral DNA into host cell chromosomes, a hallmark and essential feature of the retroviral life cycle, establishes the infection permanently. Current antiretroviral combination drug therapy cannot cure HIV infection. However, expressing an engineered HIV-1 long terminal repeat (LTR) site-specific recombinase (Tre), shown to excise integrated proviral DNA in vitro, may provide a novel and highly promising antiviral strategy. We report here the conditional expression of Tre-recombinase from an advanced lentiviral self-inactivation (SIN) vector in HIV-infected cells. We demonstrate faithful transgene expression, resulting in accurate provirus excision in the absence of cytopathic effects. Moreover, pronounced Tre-mediated antiviral effects are demonstrated in vivo, particularly in humanized Rag2−/−γc−/− mice engrafted with either Tre-transduced primary CD4+ T cells, or Tre-transduced CD34+ hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSC). Taken together, our data support the use of Tre-recombinase in novel therapy strategies aiming to provide a cure for HIV.

The company that discovers the cure will be rich, and the pharma industry already receives lots of government money and tax breaks thanks to lobbyists. Plus, Patents and the licensing of the technology / formula to other companies will fuel future research and cures for other diseases.

Because gay people are still active... And also degenerate needle drug users.

I know they receive tax breaks. I know that the one company that does something great will be famous and stocks will rise. However, they seem to really care about whether something is patentable. Meaning long term income.

There are several news reports where they speak about drugs that could be on the market, saving lives, but are not. Why are these drugs not being made for the masses?

No conspiracy theory, it is about long term income.

Maybe because free medicine has little incentive.

Robbie 12-01-2013 08:46 PM

They already can keep you from getting it in the first place.

If you are currently uninfected, and you take the newest HIV pill every day...you won't catch it even if you get fucked in the ass by an infected person.

I don't know why every performer in the industry isn't doing that already. I don't think they even realize it. I didn't know about it myself until I did some research online after that last HIV scare.

http://www.nbcnews.com/health/once-d...ers-6C10299110

They already knew it stopped it from being transmitted sexually. Then they confirmed it even stops it in IV drug users (which is basically injecting HIV directly into your bloodstream).

But for some reason...it's ignored.

clickhappy 12-01-2013 10:46 PM

there were 2 *MAJOR* breakthroughs this past year, but after the news you never heard of anything more from them.
One of them had to do with bee venom, but what happened with them?

"A once-a-day pill can protect people who inject drugs such as heroin from the AIDS virus, lowering their risk by nearly 50 percent, researchers reported Wednesday."

It lowers their risk by half at the most. Would be pretty idiotic to take it an even remotely think you were safe

No, it doesn't lower your risk by half. It stops you from catching HIV...period.

Matter of fact if you DO get infected by HIV and you start the medication within 36 hours of the infection...it kills the infection and you are "cured".

Do some research. You'll be shocked at that. I know I was.

And if I were talent in Los Angeles...I would be on a daily regimen of that every day. Why not? Get up in the morning. Eat breakfast. Take my daily vitamins and that one pill for HIV.
Done.

arent aids drugs super super duper expensive? like house payment-expensive.
Also its not "just a pill", it can make you feel sick, give you liver problems, kidney problems, bone thinning, diarrhea.

I remember hearing about the preventative drugs they use while watching the news earlier this year. I heard then that it was a %95 reduction in risk of catching HIV if you were on the drug cocktail. I figured that had to be a low estimate and didn't pay much attention to it because it was CNN. Maybe they have changed the drug combination since then though.

Manfap 12-02-2013 03:04 AM

More money in longterm treatment, than a cure.

Phoenix 12-02-2013 04:00 AM

There is a vaccine for it also that came out this year from the University of Western in London Ontario. Crazy that we can't tweak the economics of things a bit to favour things that could affect everyone.

Very clearly the reason is Money.

They make Billions selling the meds to keep people alive.

crockett 12-02-2013 07:37 AM

They don't want a cure for aids the big pharma companies want a treatment.

What is the cost for something like this? Sure its easy to say, yea ill take it every day. But if the pills are $100 a pop and not covered under your ins. Youre not going to take that on an adult performers pay.

Robbie 12-02-2013 09:18 AM

It's hard to say what the cost is.

The big pharma companies jack the price up on us in the U.S.

I would get the prescription and buy online from a Canadian pharmacy if it were me.

I know that there is a commercial on television right now with Bono saying that it's 13 cents a pill. But that is in Africa where our govt. subsidizes it for the Africans (thanks George Bush).

Too bad they won't subsidize it right here in the U.S.
Then we would be able to have that pill for 13 cents a day and eradicate HIV over time.

In other words it "Could" do all the things that every drug commercial on television for every new pill that comes out, says in their warnings.

All medication can do that. Advil can do exactly what you just described if taken over a period of time. Doesn't mean it WILL do that. Just means that for SOME people that can be the reaction.

I've had a couple of family members and more than a few close friends die from drinking alcohol and destroying their liver over the years.
Doesn't mean people are gonna stop drinking.

I think that if you kept a check on your liver functions (talent are already doing blood work every damn 2 weeks) that you could do it.
People ARE doing it already.

It just hasn't been widely reported. And for some reason, the FSC / PASS pretends this doesn't exist.

take a toxic, poison pill developed for cancer chemo now, so you don't have to take it later... terrible premise if you ask me

You might want to read a little about it before you make such statements:

Also works if you take it within 72 hours of being infected to CURE you:

Truvada, the PrEP drug, costs between $8,000 and $14,000 per year. You will also have to figure in the cost of four medical check-ups annually and possible lab tests. Check with your medical insurer to see if PrEP is covered.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenofovir/emtricitabine

300mg tenofovir
200mg emtricitabine

This pill is toxic garbage that will kill you in a few years. Tenofovir alone for a prolonged period of time will do enough damage

Tenofovir side effects:
Quote:

The most common side effects associated with tenofovir include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and asthenia. Less frequent side effects include hepatotoxicity, abdominal pain, and flatulence.[6] Tenofovir has also been implicated in causing renal toxicity, particularly at elevated concentrations.[7]

Tenofovir can cause acute renal failure, Fanconi syndrome, proteinuria or tubular necrosis. These side effects are due to accumulation of the drug in proximal tubules. Tenofovir can interact with didanosine by increasing didanosine's concentration. It also decreases the concentration of atazanavir sulfate.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenofovir

Emtricitabine side effects
Quote:

Among the more severe side effects patients may experience are a hepatotoxicity or a lactic acidosis.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emtricitabine

Tenofovir has been around since only 2001
Emtricitabine was approved in 2006

HIV patients taking this junk end up dying of some type of cancer eventually due to the harsh toxicity that accumulates in their bodies. The other common reason for an HIV patient to die is pneumonia because prolonged used of the meds weakens the immune system greatly.

ok

well you go ahead and take some tenofovir and azt for a couple years, and come back and tell us how you doin' :)

I know someone who started taking the drugs when he was 19 he's 24 now and already looks past 30 years old.

The drugs are toxic, very much so.

Why do you think so many poz gay guys in some of the porn productions look so fucked up in the face and body? It's not because the drugs are gentle it's because the drugs are destroying their bodies.

I've also seen plenty of folks on the news who are poz and look great.
You can't take some people and compare them to others. Some of those people you are talking about might have other problems...meth, IV drugs, etc.

But for healthy people, they don't have that kind of problem. Hell, look at the most famous of all: Magic Johnson. He looks great.

I also saw a special on CNN a couple of years back about "living with HIV", and they had an entire group of guys on there who changed their lives after contracting it. They eat healthy, go to the gym every day...and look like a bunch of damn bodybuilders.

My whole point is...this is breakthrough stuff here that nobody in our industry is even talking about.
This pill was just given the green light for HIV preventative in the last year.

I'm no doctor (and neither are you)...but I do think that it's something that the industry should be thinking about. Especially the girls.
The girls are the ones who have to fuck these guys...and it's always a guy bringing it in.

If I were a girl in this industry and were fucking the talent pool in "Porn Valley", I believe I would have a talk with my doctor and find out if this is something that would work for me.

What do people have to lose by asking their doctors?
That's all I'm saying. I have no idea how "toxic" it is. And I'm sure it varies from individual to individual.

But my guess is that the performers in this industry don't even know this exists. I know I didn't until all this recent HIV stuff happened and I started researching.

I think that the talent should be told about this medication, and then go talk to their doctor about it.
If the doctor says "no", then at least they had a chance to pursue it as an option and realize it wasn't for them.

But we don't know what the doctor would say.

Apparently it IS being prescribed to thousands of gay men who engage in risky sexual behavior.

If doctors around the country are doing that for the gay community...why not for the adult industry too?

The warnings and side effects for this medication don't look to be any more "severe" than the arthritis medicines they advertise on television:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhe...s#side_effects

mikesouth 12-11-2013 12:22 AM

I would like to point something out here.

There are big pharma companies that are ITCHING to be able to use data from the adult industry and to be able to access the industry as a group.

they would pay BIG bucks and of course offer free healthcare in exchange for this anonymous data and for access to clinical trials and such, as a test group adult performers are a pharmaceutical companies DREAM.

I dont know why this has never been taken up by the industry but i am told by a pharma rep that the FSC is DEAD SET against it because 1 they cant wet their beaks and 2 because it would reveal the real STD rates within the industry

This is a damn shame because the benefits would be huge, and even the PR benefits could help us as an industry

Someday, maybe....

lol
Of course it's prescribed to thousands of gay men who engage in risky behavior.
They target the people who refuse to accept responsibility of their own actions. Why stop bending over for a dick sticking out of a glory hole, and snorting carcinogenic poppers, when you can get HIV meds?! :)

Ads for HIV meds are all over the gay rags, which practically survive thanks to HIV med ads.

$14,000/yr is pretty lucrative for pharma companies

Honestly, as a gay guy I think the CNN report is just bullshit. I would guess, from experience, that very few gay guys who become HIV positibe change their behavior. The ones I know who sleep around a lot, go without rubbers and just shrug thinking HIV meds would save them. Same thing online - guys on Grindr etc. want to fuck without rubbers all over.

Anyway. I have my views on this stuff. If you do decide to go on PrEp I hope you'd keep us updated on how it goes. I would be curious to see what happens.

Personally, the more I read about HIV, and the drugs, and tests that come with disclaimers the more I know I would never put this garbage in my body, but then I'm stubborn like that :)

Call me Old School, but I believe, when factoring in costs or not, the best way to prevent the transmission of HIV is to wear a condom and/or not share needles.

HIV meds cost on average $100 USD where I live. The government gives them to citizens for free if they can't afford it. Oddly, most locals choose no meds at all and die when they die.

I'm sure that most of the people will just continue on with the fear. This is a disease that is probably the most socially stigmatizing since leprosy and polio.

jigg 12-18-2013 06:20 PM

Well here it is

Dr. Jay Levy who co-discovered the HIV virus and is still one of the top HIV researchers in the world is against PrEP - taking HIV medication as precaution - and also does not believe those who test HIV+ but are otherwise healthy should take HIV drugs immediately due to drug toxicity. HIV drugs are basically chemotherapy in a pill

Quote:

?It?s just too risky,? said Dr. Jay Levy, the U.C.S.F. virologist who was among the first to identify the cause of AIDS. The new drugs may be less toxic, Dr. Levy said, but no one knows the effects of taking them for decades.
He's quoted in this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/04/us/04sftreatment.html
