How many languages do you speak ??

It pisses me off that i didn't learn any other languages when i was younger. Sure we got some French and German etc at school, but just the basics pretty much, and i didn't have a huge interest at the time in learning any more than i did at the time. Needless to say even what i learned then i've forgotten most of it.

I get embarrassed when i mix with webmasters from Holland, Sweden, France and elsewhere who can all speak great English, yet that's all i have.

Even going on vacation to Spain recently annoyed me when i couldn't really so anything at all in Spanish.

How many languages can you speak to a reasonable extent ?? :playboy

There's no reason you can't still learn. The software they have for these things really helps the process, its not complete of course but a great place to start. It's been a small hobby of mine for years, but I'm not confident speaking them yet--which is mostly due to lack of practice.

I definitely wouldn't say i'm fluent but I have a decent grasp of spanish and french. I can understand a lot of italian and portuguese. I can read a bit in german, I really haven't spent much time with that though. I've tried to learn russian but the different alphabet makes things a lot more difficult I find.

I like watching movies with different language subtitles. Helps keep thing visual and easier to develop context.

I also speak French and my German isn't too bad.

My son is 10 and he's already fully bilingual.

Rochard 10-16-2013 10:36 AM

English.

I took French in high school, never ever met anyone who spoke French, never needed it, and never ever used it. Now I couldn't have a basic conversation in French if my life depended on it.

I wish I took Spanish. At least I could use that locally here in Northern California from time to time.

I was just talking to goodgirl this morning about Pig Latin and Turkey Latin; she doesn't do either of them.

I have English down and I can travel in Spain or Baja California with relative ease. I can follow a conversation in German, but my participation would be in English.

Choopa_Pardo 10-16-2013 01:20 PM

I speak Jive.

RandyRandy 10-16-2013 01:26 PM

1. French (my mother is French, spoke it in the house and I spent every summer in Alsace)

2. Spanish (studied it in school and when my daughter was born in Colombia, I spent 4 months there. Hired a tutor for 2 hours a day and at the end of four months my Spanish was (and still is) fluent)

3. English (Pretty good considering my public school education in Jersey City, NJ.)

4. Between the Spanish and French, I can understand a lot of Italian. But speaking it s another story.

Alice22 10-16-2013 01:28 PM

Great Hebrew and Russian and very poor English.

Started to pick up some Portuguese when I was in Sao Paulo, Brazil a few months ago. I practised with the Mindsnacks app (highly recommended) in addition to a CD just a month or so before I left.

I was really surprised how well I managed to get on with my 120+ words...

It's never too late to learn a language... but go somewhere and put it to use!

Markul 10-16-2013 02:13 PM

Three of them.

mineistaken 10-16-2013 02:15 PM

four, not fluently of course

Damn, 120 words is like nothing for me, when I knew that much I could barely communicate. Besides ordering something or saying whats your name etc :)
