Is it possible to have 100k in bandwidth expenses a month?

Somebody on a small board is talking big stuff about how his bandwidth bill is over $100,000 a month. Now this isn't a program owner. This is somebody who claims to be pushing hundreds of AVS sites. I just don't see how this is possible...Maybe I'm wrong...but I want to make sure before I respond.....

Jakke PNG 02-22-2003 05:08 PM

Maybe he has a SHITLOAD of avs sites.
...or just pays a LOT per mbs. :)

Juicy D. Links 02-22-2003 05:08 PM

I pay .50 cents a gig on a dedicated so this fuckewr gotta be pushing someserious BW or he is getting charged like $10/gig

Toker 02-22-2003 05:09 PM

Well ya can get it now for 50 cents a gig so I'd say he was burning up the net, no wonder it takes me so long to get Yahoo up..LOL

Alky 02-22-2003 05:11 PM

its not impossible... likely? no.

BVF 02-22-2003 05:11 PM

this is what he said
---------------------------------------------------------

We happen to do roughly 640,000 GB of data across the network. We're not talking 5 sites, 20 sites, or even 100. We're talking hundreds of sites. At $0.17 per GB, that's $108,800. Our rate isn't always $0.17, but it's usually close for the majority of the network.

If you're paying hosting companies a fortune to put up with your spamming practices I could see it.

He's most likely full of shit, but Yes it is possible....

Sly_RJ 02-22-2003 05:13 PM

Why even respond? Who cares?

I bet he pays a quarter or half that. He wouldnt quote a $108,800 blah blah blah if he used that. He would have said "We spend over $100k a month on bandwidth alone."

m0rph3us 02-22-2003 05:15 PM

There's people who pay $500,000 a month. What's your point ?

Mutt 02-22-2003 05:16 PM

what he said.

possible but unlikely. Especially since he describes his operation as mostly being the AVS biz. To rack up that kind of bandwidth bill, you'd need an in house staff of people churning out a helluva lot of AVS sites and generating all that traffic. Anybody driving that much traffic who doesn't have their own paysites is an idiot.

People like rackshack maybe. End users? Nope.. not these days. Maybe in 98-00 people like Yahoo and Ebay. But these days? No way. Rackshacks network MIGHT cost them around there... and they have a massive network.

Mr.Fiction 02-22-2003 05:23 PM

Very doubtful.

Why don't you invite him to GFY to fight it out with the pros over here? :1orglaugh

http 02-22-2003 05:25 PM

HUNDREDS of avs sites huh? :1orglaugh

I have close to 1000 and that cost below 200 $ per month

AVS sites push close to nothing in terms of bandwidth, even with movies

KC 02-22-2003 05:32 PM

Maybe he's a webhosting provider....

or he's just full of shit.

Brad Mitchell 02-22-2003 06:01 PM

If he does 600,000+ gigs that is about 2 gigabit... Wholesale on the bandwidth might be in the area of $60,000-$80,000 plus servers, management, etc. In some places around the country 2 gigabit from premium providers could easily cost $100,000.

Brad

NetRodent 02-22-2003 06:03 PM

$100,000k / month? He's either pushing in the neighborhood of 2Gbps or he's paying too much.

m0rph3us 02-22-2003 06:04 PM

you sure he 'has' a couple of avs sites or does he own an avs network?

jact 02-22-2003 06:05 PM

Anything's possible. A T3 used to run 45,000$ per month in Canada from UUNet and we were using 2 of em full tilt.. So..

SR 02-22-2003 06:07 PM

Sounds like bullshit unless he hosts an AVS network with alot of movie content like Adultbouncer or Universalpass.
he needs a 2gbit connection and I bet nobody needs that to push his own sites.

And if you burn that much you won't pay more than 10 cents a gig.

manuelk 02-22-2003 06:08 PM

sounds like adultbouncer .. and i dont talk about their webmasters :winkwink:

LiveDose 02-22-2003 06:09 PM

Ask him what his monthly net is. That's all that matters. You will find that most people who are truly successful rarely brag about it or say much if anything about their business unless asked in private.

I bet he is full of shit. Tell him to come over here and post. We'll spank him good. Or ask him for a URL.

:2 cents:

* but of course it is possible.

<IMX> 02-22-2003 06:16 PM

Good enough to shoot the shit as anything else...
"hundreds."
Hmm... i think the person is full of shit I just shot.

It's been said but unless HUGE movie sites giving shit loads away outside of the AVS as well as inside, hundreds of sites aint gonna use more than a few hundred gig.

I'll go with most in this thread and say it's bullshit.

Dax 02-22-2003 06:41 PM

Wow.. that is a lot of bandwidth...

I know of a "pretty big" sponsor program who are paying about $75.000 a month on bandwidth... but they have some very big sites and they have a lot of movies...

I don't see a 'regular' webmaster pushing that much.

Moose 02-22-2003 06:47 PM

I have "heard" so I dont know (could be BS,for all Iknow) of couple end users using 2Gbit

So if that is the case, I could see it by the time you pay for servers, power, admin etc...

You shouldn't be counting servers or administration as part of your bandwidth bill. Servers are a capital expense and administration is payroll.

Eh? 2gig is nothing. It wouldn't even run you $500 at many hosts.

ZoiNk 02-22-2003 06:51 PM

BS on the person doing AVS sites and pushing that. I don't even hit .5mbps with I dunno how many avs sites I have. 5,000 - 10,000 I would guess.

If you know of a host that gives 2 Gbps for $500 a month, please tell the rest of us about them.

Im talking if it is outsourced to a hosting co. and the bill is combined.

Ya, let me know where I can get 2Gbps for $500.

I will pack up my network tonight and move there.

Off the top of my head 5x$99 rachshack boxes would give that. Reliableservers do a $400 deal that gives a theoretical 1.6gig a month which equates to $500 for 2gig. I know there's others out there I haven't used/looked into. Plenty of people on this board paying 25c or less a gig. Why would it be hard to find? I'd imagine candid can come very close to 25c or less a gig on large amounts of BW (paid per mbit). Certainly it's no big secret.

Besides when we're talking about $100k a few hundred bucks difference matters little. The point is still very valid that a few gig isn't gonna cost more than a few k on even premiun BW with an expensive host.

I thunk'd GB and MB are being confused here...lol

I think you have NO clue what you are talking about here.

You have ANY idea how much 2 Gbps is?

LOL

You are confusing Terabyte per month with Gigabit per second :glugglug
