Godaddy wtf???

I've been with Godaddy for 8 years. I've never called their customer service number in 8 years.

I woke up this morning to a wicked hangover and an auto renew email with a charge of $161.57. Not a big deal. But I'm cheap and always use a coupon code for the best price.

I call "billing support" to reverse the charge. (480) 505-8855

I'm told that if I reverse the charge they will cancel the domains and they will no longer be registered in my name.

I ask for a supervisor.

Supervisor "Nate" gets on the line. I ask him how long I've been a customer. He tells me 8 years. I ask him how many times I've called them. He says zero.

I asked if it's true that I'll lose the domains if they reverse the charge. He says yes there's nothing he can do. I tell him about the coupon codes I use. He says if I give them a code they will discount the charge. I just woke up with a hangover. I say that I've been a customer for 8 years and have never called them and I ask if he can just input a code with the best rate and save us both time. He says no. I say thanks for the help and hang up.

Is it true that if they reverse the charge I actually lose my domains?

What's the best Godaddy alternative out there?

BSleazy 10-16-2012 10:55 AM

$161.57 for on domain for one year??? That doesn't make sense.

Sounds legit... 13 domains? Tax and shit? Pay and move on. Is your coupon supposed to last forever with them or something? What am I missing? I am a Namecheap guy, never bothered with GD due to the negativity posted about them all over the fucking internet.

Bladewire 10-16-2012 11:00 AM

No

I never auto renew.

don't want to bust your balls but that seems pretty logical to me, if you wanted to use a coupon you should have manually renewed them on their website and apply the coupon

Harmon 10-16-2012 11:02 AM

I get it I think... they auto-renewed an account that should not have been? Am I getting this right? Why is this shit like Mandarin fucking Chinese to me? :1orglaugh

To me logical would be giving an 8 year customer, with a lot of domains, who's called for the first time in 8 years, a discount code on 13 domains over the phone and thanking them for their business.

Then they don't end up asking others where to take their business.

lol, because 13 domains is baller? Because 8 years means something to some ass clown 25 year old cubicle manager?

You are dealing with a company that deals with massive volume. Not a black, squiggly hair in your Egg McMuffin at McDonalds. :1orglaugh

Looking at NameCheap now and I like what I'm seeing. How long you been with them? Any problems?

BlackCrayon 10-16-2012 11:11 AM

domains are set to auto-renew by default. you need to change the setting otherwise you will get hit. i have a shit ton of domains at godaddy and no matter how long you've been with them or how many domains they will only do so much for you.

Since I can honestly remember. Prior to that, it was dealing with internic. Never one issue. I can not speak for everybody, but I can not remember the last time I have read anything negative about Namecheap

PornMD 10-16-2012 11:16 AM

No offense, but it sounds like you left them on auto-renew. That's not their fault. Granted, saying the domains would be cancelled seems ridiculous given they would have just passed the expiration date (GoDaddy doesn't remove them from account until 18 days after exp and if you're a VIP account, you can still renew until 25 days after by calling in). Still, I don't think most registrars would retroactively give you a deal after the auto-renew that you left on overdinged you.

Supz 10-16-2012 11:18 AM

and somehow this is godaddy's fault that they have policies in place that when you let shit expire they make a few extra bucks. its your fault. you let them auto-renew. you didnt renew with coupon. wake the fuck up and stop drinking until you puke, and run your business properly.

Yeah I only have 73 domains with them at this point but it's odd calling the bank yesterday and asking for a refund on a wire transfer fee and getting it without question then calling GoDaddy for the first time and hitting a wall for just a few bucks.

That's exactly what I thought.

GoDaddy is great until it's not ... Said it a million times. It's only a matter of time.

LamboSV 10-16-2012 11:51 AM

I like NameCheap better then GoDaddy in my opinion

Does NameCheap have coupon codes too? I noticed .com domains there are $10.69

LamboSV 10-16-2012 12:28 PM

Well right now GoDaddy has the best deal with a maximum of 3 domain registration @ 5.99 a domain with the coupon code "599scott" without quotes

I still prefer NameCheap even though they don't have coupons recently to match GoDaddy's, sometimes better service is worth the extra few bucks

Tom_PM 10-16-2012 12:43 PM

I use dotster who sends "your domains will auto-renew in XX number of days" emails.

I've only ever had 1 issue with them in 12 yrs and it was resolved in my favor since it was their error.

However for the record, I dont shop registrar based on price. It's too important. A buck today, or loss of business tomorrow.. easy one there.

Yeah just do a google search for Namecheap coupons, they always have coupons available every month that bring the price down a $1 or so. Once you get over 50 domains with them they will also activate a coupon that gives you a discount on all future domain purchases and renewals. You'll love Namecheap, I use them for ALL of my domains...their support is great, their backend is much better then Godaddys, and they're just all around great!

Seriously, pick Namecheap!

flashfire 10-16-2012 01:03 PM

godaddy sucks balls use someone else

pornmasta 10-16-2012 01:04 PM

$161.57 for 13 domains ?

yup, they sure do have coupons. See sig :winkwink:

Also, if you have 50+ domains in your account, then you ask the live support to enable the golddeal coupon for your account. Then coupon code GOLDDEAL always works and you don't have to hunt for coupons, but they do run coupons with better deals occasionally.

:2 cents:

Same here I really don't see anything weird. They are shady with the auto-renewal shit, you have to unclick the option in your panel or it will renew automatically.

FreeHugeMovies 10-16-2012 03:42 PM

LOL @ godaddy users

When you first reg a domain with Godaddy they always turn auto-renew on. You have to be the one to log into your account and turn it off.

I always put it on manual renew, but during my 7 years with them I got 2 instances when somehow all my domains were set back on auto renew and I lost some money (because they autorenewed and I could not input discount codes)

ps: OP so what if you are 8 year customer, if you use codes all the time you do not leave them any real profits. For example current code is 8.67$ (including 0.18 icaan fee) so how much do they earn for a domain, a few cents or 10-20 cents? :)

Hmm, I think you get a drop down while registering where you can choose auto or manual.

MaDalton 10-16-2012 04:24 PM

even for domains with auto renewal i get like 4 or 5 email reminder from Godaddy before the renew takes place
