Can u swim?

I moved into a place that has a shared pool and when people come to visit I am amazed by how many cant swim or even stay afloat...

They just sink....

Even if I could not swim my legs would start kicking and I would stay above the surface I am sure.

It must be some sort of instinct that some of have and some dont...

CurrentlySober 10-06-2011 12:36 AM

only in a vat of poo...

porno jew 10-06-2011 12:38 AM

ottopottomouse 10-06-2011 03:46 AM

My buoyancy did not go up with my weight...

It's so simple to stay afloat. Keep your head back, chest up and some air in your lungs -- you barely need to kick. I always see people killing themselves to tread water and its kind of funny.

halfpint 10-06-2011 05:06 AM

ohh i love swimming

like anything else it takes practice.. if you grew up with a pool in your back yard i'm sure you can swim and float perfectly fine. If you had a decent public pool set up in your community (which i did) then you probably wouldn't have a problem either. If you didn't even get into a pool until you were 18, never took any lessons, have never seen others do it you will get nervous, tense up and sink to the bottom..

It's not easy to learn at an older age because you have to overcome fears. When you are a kid there are less worries, because normally our parents do it for us.

mom threw me in the pool when i was 9 months old. babies have a natural tendency to swim, similar to dogs i think

I have seen some Discovery Channel type progs about that sort of thing and it does seem that we are born with it and loose it as we get older.

Excellent swimmer, experienced heavy surf swimmer. Anyone with kids is irresponsible if they don't enroll them at a very young age in swimming classes.

I grew up having a pool in the back yard, and our house was the summer hang out.

But when I went into the Marines I was stunned that half of recruits couldn't swim. It wasn't only blacks, it was whites from the country too. That really surprised me.

brassmonkey 10-06-2011 07:25 AM

yes i can. we would throw quarters in 20 feet deep end of the public pool when i was a kid first one to get it kept it. fun times :)

candyflip 10-06-2011 08:10 AM

I don't know if you are joking - but that is so common.

Even when I was a skinny kid I bobbed around like a cork.

AdultEUhost-Sebas 10-06-2011 09:07 AM

Everyone must learn to swim in this world!

Scott McD 10-06-2011 09:09 AM

Not been swimming in ages, but yeah i'm a pretty good swimmer!

czarina 10-06-2011 09:12 AM

yes, I can swim, and very good. Being an island girl, learning to swim was a must as I grew up.

there are people with positive buoyancy and people with negative buoyancy, it has nothing to do with their body weight. My son is skinny as a rail (one of those 6 year olds that run around all day long and have no body fat at all), and has 100% negative buoyancy, which he inherited from my husband, who is about 25lbs overweight, and still can't float to save his life.
They both swim pretty good, thank goodness. Or they'd be toast now living in Cancun!

Saw the same thing in the Navy, I'm like you knew you were going on a ship right?

I had an indoor pool around the corner from where I lives, had high dives and everything, swam like a fish

Sid70 10-06-2011 10:31 AM

One would think.... But I never gave it any thought. I guess somewhere along the line someone asked me if I could swim and I said "Yeah, my parents had a pool" and that was that.

Have you moved into a home for the handicapped??

I've been in hundreds of pools in my life and ive never seen people 'just sinking'. I could understand one or two but not enough of them for me to take notice and be amazed as you say.

mineistaken 10-06-2011 12:48 PM

I can swim, but only for about 2 meters in the salt sea or about 1 meter in fresh water lake :) And practice does not help to improve those numbers lol

Some people have no flare for the dramatic....
