the Home Owners Association has cut my internet off, wtf can I use?

So the landlord of the house I am renting is behind on and/or not paying the HOA fees, which has caused them to disconnect my Brighthouse cable internet connection with no warning and nothing but a small door hanger slip explaining what has happened.

My Dish Network satellite TV is still functioning so I take it they cant fuck with that.. I looked up the plans and pricing for satellite internet and let's just say its very far out if the realm of possibilities for a webmaster or any average active internet user in 2010 due to monthly data usage limits (17gb down 5gb up?!).

I'm not sure if the HOA only has the ability to disconnect Brighthouse connections or if it applies to all cable/phone/dsl connections. I'm thinking about tryng to run a fiber optic connection but I have no idea if they can fuck with that too..

Does anyone have any knowledge on what I can do? Know any companies or type of internet service that could get around this bullshit? If I have to move because of something as stupid as this I'm going to slay the entire fucking Board of Directors.

TCLGirls 10-18-2010 10:25 PM

Pay the HOA fess yourself, deduct from rent amount.

CYF 10-18-2010 10:26 PM

what about a verizon laptop card for the time being?

Never dealt with a HOA so not sure what to tell you on that one, but that's pretty fucked up.

TidalWave 10-18-2010 10:26 PM

what right do they have to fuck with your brighthouse connection? that belongs to brighthouse, not the HOA
are you paying brighthouse yourself directly? (if not then forget what i said above)

GrouchyAdmin 10-18-2010 10:27 PM

Hell, late last week my HOA took my fucking tree without either requesting to do so, or giving notice. I ended up calling them and calmly explaining that the gentlemen in my front yard would be shot if they were not claimed.

They left one support staff for the tree in the ground, and a huge hole. They said they'd have the tree handled on Friday, but now, they're tellin me it may be next week.

Today I turned it into a pirate flag. Tomorrow, I'm going to put duct tape over the hole and change the pirate flag to a 'TREE OUT OF ORDER' sign.

I wish I had some 'police line' tape. I'd love to draw the outline of the tree and 'mark off' the front yard.

They really should not be able to impact your services for a lack of HOA being paid.. and depending on what/how it was signed - there is an amazing amount they can get away with.

comeplay 10-18-2010 10:31 PM

Send them a bill daily for lost wages till they reconnect you

It sucks that the HOA can fuck with you like that but they can.

Three years ago we moved into a new house. As our one year lease was about to renew we found out that the last payment the landlord had made was the month before we had moved in. They also were not paying condo association fees and our water almost got shut off until I paid up for them.

What sucked is that everything was supposed to be included in our rent ... and our monthly rent was more than the mortgage and the condo fees combined so they had no reason not to pay their bills. The mortgage also included the taxes. If they weren't greedy they could have made a $150 monthly profit (we never needed any repairs or such ... we're low maintenance tenants) and kept their house as an investment property.

Losers. I feel for you man.

could be worse

kane 10-18-2010 10:53 PM

Do you pay the cable company for your internet or is it included in your rent? It seems to me that the HOA doesn't own the cable or that service so they don't have the right to shut it off. If the HOA has a deal with the cable company than it could be a different situation.

Either way it is not your fault. You paid the rent, you can't control what the landlord does. I would contact whoever is responsible (the landlord or HOA) and tell them how much you lose each day that the internet access isn't on. Tell them you will bill them daily then take them to small claims court to collect if needed.

Of course if you agreed to all of this when you signed the lease there isn't much you can do.

This scares me a bit. I think - eventually - we'll all be buying rifles and moving to North Dakota. And I'm fucking Canadian.

That would explain why you picked North Dakota.

exactly!

tony286 10-19-2010 10:34 AM

If the cable is included in the hoa fees then they can shut it off. I would worry more if your landlord is current on his mortgage.

candyflip 10-19-2010 10:46 AM

Sprint 4G wireless does the job if you can get one of those.

My phone operates as a 4g wifi spot and it really is suitable for business usage.

LOL im sorry, im laughing pretty hard right now.

Jakez 10-19-2010 12:37 PM

What makes it most difficult is that these fucks won't even help figure out what I can get away with hooking up, they just blame their actions on doing what the Board of Directors tells them to and claim there's nothing they can do.

I guess I'm just going to have to make an account with another internet company and see if they can intercept that too. I know they can't cut off satellite service but there are no decent satellite plans that exist as far as I can see. The latency and caps on satellite usage are far too unrealistic.

I didn't catch where you specified whether you have to pay the bill to your cable company or not. If you are paying it then this is likely illegal as hell. Possibly illegal enough to where you could collect damages. If they are paying it then I'm unsure. A landlord can't shut off utilities or services over non-payment in most areas. I'm not sure about a HOA.

Who actually shut it off - the cable company or a representative of the HOA?

Machete_ 10-19-2010 01:46 PM
