Home owners associations are awesome. The one here its illegal for them to block you from having solar panels on your house, but it doesn't stop them harassing the shit out of you about it. The guy across the road after he decided to go solar they nit picked the shit out of of everything else on his house.

Its not even some small condo.

Possibly illegal enough to where you could collect damages. If they are paying it then I'm unsure. A landlord can't shut off utilities or services over non-payment in most areas. I'm not sure about a HOA.

Who actually shut it off - the cable company or a representative of the HOA?

Cable and internet are provided to the entire community and is paid for individually by each homes HOA fees. I don't know what companies the HOA has deals setup with but I am not using what they provide, this is my own personal account I setup and pay for directly. I'm not sure if it is legal or not but Brighthouse let them cut my shit off so I'm guessing this is just another routine disconnect for them, as they also have little door hangers ready to use with Brighthouses name on them explaining the disconnect. Which makes me think maybe this is only a problem with using Brighthouse. But I really have no fucking clue.

I'm looking at either just trying another company, maybe some fiber optic internet, and see if the HOA can intercept that too, or going with Clearwires 4g wireless service

For the love of god man, don't go with satellite internet. The only reason I am on it is because I am in the deadzone, and the only other option is dialup. I'd jump to a rocket stick or other option if I could.

Cases such as this will only become more common.

So you had your own account set up and were not using their service?

Call up Bright house and ask them. This does not sound legal to me if you are paying the bill yourself. No way. And you don't even owe it your landlord does.

Go with clear. There are no cables just a wireless cable modem. So I don't think the HOA can intercept the signal without violating the law.

Got a phone with 3G? Tether it to your PC and get up to 7.2 Mbps download speeds. Many cell phone providers now offer unlimited bandwidth accounts.

Domain Broker 10-19-2010 02:55 PM

slapdotted.

docputer 10-19-2010 03:04 PM

Call ATT and add tethering to your iphone plan.

Is the internet a service to each condo owner by the HOA?

If so, and conditioned upon the payment of HOA dues;

Make a demand of the Landlord in writing certified mail return receipt NOW. Tell the Landlord in that letter that you will sue the landlord for breach of contract if the HOA dues are not paid in full with in 72 hours.

If his nonpayment of the HOA dues is not allowing you the full tenancy in the property ? sue him and motion that the Court establish an escrow for your rent to be paid to ? if you are paying rent into the court ordered escrow he cant evict for non-payment, then you turn the table and have him by the balls.

Non-payment of the HOA assessments creates a lien that the property can be foreclosed on.

Don't get stuck in the middle. You pay your rent money you are entitled to full use of the property and peaceful tenancy.

If you are unable to file a suit yourself, hire a local attorney make sure that you ask for court costs and attorney fees in your "Prayer for Relief" in the suit.

Not legal advice ? consult a local attorney.

if you have a Blackberry, the tether.com app is what ya need.

Jakez 10-19-2010 03:24 PM

I have an iPhone 3g and unlimited plan, not sure if tethering works on it, I've tried before without much luck but that was a while ago.

Called Clear about their 4g service and they said it is available in my area but I will bounce around on the 3g and roaming for 3-4 weeks until the 4g coverage reaches me. Then when I gave them my address they said the system wont let them ship the equipment to it and it wouldnt let them ship to the other 2 I tried or a P.O. box either. Fucking Christ.

SuzzyQ 10-19-2010 03:26 PM

Just get an air card. Verizion, with unlimited BW costs 60bucks a month..

candyflip 10-19-2010 03:30 PM

Clearwire 4G is the same service as the Sprint 4G wireless I mentioned.

It really is a viable solution...ah, I guess not here.

Give Sprint a call.

Jakez 10-19-2010 03:32 PM

Ok I guess tethering is possible now on the iPhone but I haven't updated to the 4.0 software I'm still on 3.1 or something. So I'll have to just get to a computer with internet and update my phone so I can tether for the time being.

SuzzyQ, are you sure there's no monthly data usage limits on the air cards? Everything I looked up had some crazy restrictions like 5gb-17gb monthly.

Jakez 10-19-2010 03:41 PM

Can tethering be hooked up to my router so that I can have wireless throughtout the house?

Depending on your phone, you should be able to use the wifi on it in lieu of your router. Stacking a router atop of it will be double-NAT at best, and at worst, just won't be possible.

Jim_Gunn 10-19-2010 04:21 PM

I routinely tether my Windows laptop to my Android smartphone with the USB cable and a $10 app called EasyTether on Sprint's 3G network. It's essentially unlimited data plan is part of my approx. $89 after-tax cell plan. I do this all day, multiple days every week from shoot locations like I am at right now.

Verizon is better than either of those?

I have unlimited and VZ works everywhere.

VHNet 10-19-2010 07:19 PM

I deal with HOAs every day -- won't get into it.

Your landlord should have provided you with the rules of the HOA when you moved in -- otherwise you can get yourself into some crap like this without even knowing it.

What I would do is call your association president, or treasurer, explain the situation...and ask what can be done. You've obviously held up your end of the bargain, it's the person that owns the house that's fucking them.

NOTE: people on the HOA boards tend to HATE renters, and yes...they know every house that's being rented out. You get stuffed into a stereotype despite whether or not you fit it.

Get on the good side of the board president, treasurer...whomever...and you'll be back in business in no time.

VHNet 10-19-2010 07:20 PM

OH, and not paying association fees has much worse ramifications than just cutting off internet.

I'd get on your landlord's ass because they could start a world of shit if they wanted (The HOA, that is)

Jakez 10-19-2010 07:40 PM

VHNet, do you think they have their community internet service deal setup with Brighthouse and that's why they had my account disconnected so easily, or can they do this with any company I use?

Today I stuck an old white tennis shoe on top and replaced the sign with a placard that says 'Native North American Shoe Tree'. No pictures because it's actually pretty lame in execution.

If I don't get the police line tape in time, I got some crappy/generic plsatic 'CAUTION - DANGER' tape in a spoooky font. It can be a Zomtree.

Happened to a nice family I know. They were renting and paying only to find out (by the bank notice) that the house was in foreclosure. The notice gave them 30 days to vacate.

I think these owners should face some type of charges...

They left one support staff for the tree in the ground, and a huge hole. They said they'd have the tree handled on Friday, but now, they're tellin me it may be next week.

Today I turned it into a pirate flag. Tomorrow, I'm going to put duct tape over the hole and change the pirate flag to a 'TREE OUT OF ORDER' sign.

I wish I had some 'police line' tape. I'd love to draw the outline of the tree and 'mark off' the front yard.

They really should not be able to impact your services for a lack of HOA being paid.. and depending on what/how it was signed - there is an amazing amount they can get away with.

That's awesome. Our garage door broke once and we replaced it (we were the second owners of the house) and it didn't exactly match the rest and we got a threatening letter saying we had to replace it or paint it.

I called and explained that the garage door had been broken and replaced. When they asked if it was replaced by me, I said no. Technically it was replaced by Home Depot. :)

They did threaten though to have someone just come paint it. They would show up to our house unbeknown to us and just start painting. Yeah, I can just see TheDoc now when that happens.
