ubuntu, who uses it?

should i use it? if so why?

Socks 04-29-2010 07:46 PM

Hey Mo, hope everything is good.

I use it for messing around with. We use FreeBSD in production, but here at home when I just want to futz around I load up Ubuntu in VMWare. Super easy to get started with if you don't really know what you're doing, and with VMWare you don't need to dual boot, or dedicate a whole computer to it. I usually just maximize the VMware window on my second monitor and you can just slide between both.

Only pain is no copy paste.. If you DO have a second PC to run Ubuntu on, I'd recommend software called Synergy, which lets you share your keyboard and mouse (and copy paste!!) between multiple computers, running different OS's even. You could have three computers (mac, PC and unix if you wanted) on three monitors, and just slide your same mouse through all the screens. Your keyboard will type into whichever is active (where your cursor is).

Gl.

It's getting way closer. When I first tried it maybe ~2 years ago I couldn't even get my display resolution changed without what was for me major issues. Now it's just as easy or easier than windows to do that. When I load up Ubuntu my internet just works, display just works, didn't have to install a single driver..

Only issue right now is my mouse back button doesn't work. It's a G7 wireless. I tried to search on how to fix it, but all the tutorials are for older ubuntu versions and don't work.

Simple things, but it's getting there. I think I could leave a Ubuntu PC at my mom's house and she wouldn't have any issues using it.

I've used it 100% for quite a while, running winder now 7 :( but all in all Ubuntu kicks ass and is really user friendly

I use it as my main operating system ....why use it ? for me its because its super stable.....easy to use.....software installs and removes direct from a built in software centre ( so no missing stuff/files if you delete a program)..no virus worries ...so many different reasons.

ruff 04-29-2010 09:01 PM

I use it for surfing the web and running a little home server. Very stable and bulletproof operating system. I also put it on my Macbook.

bDok 04-29-2010 09:05 PM

like socks does... I play with it in vmware.

BIGTYMER 04-29-2010 09:06 PM

My servers at home run it.

fuzebox 04-29-2010 09:57 PM

I've been running linux as a desktop since 1998... Nowadays I run Ubuntu and I am extremely impressed at the hardware detection and out of the box features.

Matthew 04-29-2010 10:18 PM

I use Ubuntu on my office laptop and it's fine.. Your question is if you should use it, well, in my opinion why bother, if you can use windows ;D

Of course, Ubuntu works. But now and then there will be annoyances like there's no serious graphic package (GIMP - pleeaahhse, not a serious one) etc. etc.

To the guys screaming on how unstable is windows yadayada - I'm using the dreaded vista at home, and never had any problems and it works fast.

So, why bother. The reason I do use ubuntu at office is because it just came on my notebook and I'm so lazy I didn't bother to switch :D

martinsc 04-29-2010 11:30 PM

I use it sometimes... I like it :thumbsup

hypedough 04-30-2010 02:34 AM

Its great for netbooks, just download an Ubuntu Netbook Remix and load it on a thumb-drive and you're ready to try it or install it. Great, quick, and stable. Gotta love it :)

don`t waste your time...

nation-x 04-30-2010 03:18 AM

It really depends on how you use the computer... if you use photoshop alot then I would skip it unless you want to learn gimp.

ThumbLord 04-30-2010 05:03 AM

It came installed on the new computer I bought for my son.
He played with it for about half an hour and installed Vista on it, so ......

Hey Mo. Hit me on ICQ when you have time I know someone looking to do some translation work if you have it in her languages.

Just extra stuff.

Babaganoosh 04-30-2010 10:20 AM

Ubuntu is a great OS. It's a shame there is absolutely no software available for it that is worth a shit. Those of us who need to do real work using tools other than an email client and a browser can't use it.

michael.kickass 04-30-2010 12:32 PM

Ubuntu is the best Linux distribution I've tried so far, however... It's still Linux and it will never be anything like Windows. By this I mean that you always need a higher level of computer knowledge before trying any Linux distribution out.

LOL, and that's like wanting to use a musket instead of an M-16

Wifey's World A.M. 04-30-2010 01:20 PM

Ubuntu is my preferred server OS.

Horny Joe 04-30-2010 01:21 PM

Ubuntu 10.04 is a MAJOR step up from the other versions, imo. I use Win7 and Mac for work, but Ubuntu for fun :) Stable and fast! And the new version has some cool features!

Loch 04-30-2010 01:22 PM

just had a new server installed with the new ubunto 64 bit server software.
Our developed tells me its good so im going with that, i believe its also the first update supported version

Chosen 04-30-2010 01:31 PM

I think I'll stick with WinXP for now... :)

WebairGerard 04-30-2010 01:49 PM

Mo lets talk next week bud. :thumbsup

Nodtveidt 04-30-2010 03:00 PM

Can't stand Ubuntu personally. Using WinXP only because of certain apps, but otherwise I'd still be using FreeBSD. Not a Linux fan at all, but Unix itself has always been more reliable than anything out of Redmond.

Naechy 04-30-2010 03:29 PM

you hate Microsoft, right?

I built and left one with my Grandma.

She has no problem emailing, browsing the internet and even watching YouTube...all at age 82 with no prior personal computer experience, using Ubuntu.

It doesn't play nice out of the box with Toshiba Satellite series, but does with pretty much all other hardware. For the Toshiba pieces of junk you need to manually build the driver for the RealTek wireless adaptor/nic, as well as go through hoops to get the built-in mic and cam to function properly.

Aside from those setup issues though, runs great!

Helix 04-30-2010 04:18 PM

Wubi is an officially supported Ubuntu installer for Windows users that can bring you to the Linux world with a single click. Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other Windows application, in a simple and safe way. Are you curious about Linux and Ubuntu? Trying them out has never been easier!

smutnut 04-30-2010 04:20 PM

It's free, that's why it's good. And so is GIMP!

ThumbLord 04-30-2010 04:23 PM

did anybody seriously read my post?
Domain Broker and Kristin amongst others?
my 13 year old son did not like it and changed Ubuntu to Vista?

No idea what you're talking about considering most Toshiba's have Atheros wireless adapters which are heavily supported under Linux :winkwink:

smutnut 04-30-2010 04:42 PM

i have it on my second OP start up

TheDoc 04-30-2010 04:46 PM

I recommend ubuntu for anyone or any family member that uses the computer for email, talking to friends and surfing the net sometimes... It's safe, it's fast, it stays that way and it's stable. Perfect for 90% of Internet users.

It's the OS for the Machine that is my cable box but work station wise, it's Windows 7 for a reason.
