I have pretty much been a beta tester of Microsoft products since Windows 98.

I loved windows 98SE and didn't upgrade to anything else until Windows 2000 Professional. That was a solid mother fucker right there. Windows XP Professional was a bit testy in the beginning, but SP1 fixed a lot of problems and by SP2 it was just as solid as 2000P...

Vista was a fucking nightmare from the beginning. Nothing worked and all of the high hopes functionality was stripped out because it just got too damn chaotic.

Windows 7 has reminded me of Windows 2000 Professional since the beginning. It is solid as fuck. It is a lot like have the addons of Vista integrated with the solidness of the Windows NT line (which 2000P was a part of).

I have 4 cores on the processor and 6 gigs of ram. I no longer close shit down or have to restart FF because it bloated to 700mb of memory. While FF still does that and seems to always want to consume 16 to 25% of the processing power, which translates to 60% - 100% of a single core, I don't have to give a shit anymore. Yes, this has a lot to do with the simple fact that my PC has 4 cores and so much memory... I know... But Windows 7 seems to handle shit pretty good. I am using 64 bit Ultimate and it kicks ass!

I elected to "upgrade" from Vista. I did this so I could tell you if it sucks or not. I have upgraded from 98 to ME, etc... I know the horror stories. This upgrade was flawless. I truly could not be anymore impressed with how solid this system runs.

Windows 7 found every single driver but one. It was for a USB network card and it seemed that Windows thought it was a drive. So I had to stick another USB network bard I had in another computer into it and it loaded its drivers, hit the Internet and loaded the other cards drivers. Unplugged the 2nd one and Windows 7 elected to switch to the 1st for the wireless connection. Nice.

Overall I have to say Microsoft finally did something right. It has been a long time since 2000P and they finally knocked another one out of the ballpark.

For those of you that don't know, 2000 Professional was built on the Windows NT architecture. I believe Vista was also built on it but it seemed more like the ME architecture... Windows NT was built with corporations in mind. You can have Joe the Plumber complain on his shit blog all you want, but if Sears says your shit sucks, well, you are going to lose a lot of business. So they did NT right. Now they did Windows 7 right.

Nice review. I still say clean installs are best though :)

I love Windows 7. This is coming from a Windows 2000 lover that took a long time to finally move to XP.

Vista fucking blew.

Windows 7 is a fantastic OS. Even Mac users say it's good (which translates to its awesome).

I'm definitely digging windows 7.

mac users are just upset and always try to justify their bad purchase by spewing mac spam to others. i've seen people fall to mac spam and realize it months later. it is hilarious :upsidedow

I have been using Win7 for about 2 months and it is a million times better than Vista which has lots of issues. I am trying to get my wife to upgrade to Win7 from Vista but she doesnt want the downtime and how long it takes to put all her stuff back that she uses everyday.

Well my winxp works fine so question is there se to upgrade to new os where i need to install all programs again plus it probaly require more memory then windows xp

That's an uneducated reason, as Windows 7 moves all of your files to a Windows.Old folder when you install it, keeping all of your old documents.
Then Microsoft has a utility that will move it all back to where it should be automatically.

I'll reserve my opinion until after the first service pack arrives.

Why? It rocks right out of the box. This one isn't in need of a service pack right away.

It's extremely funny to read such reviews :) I mean it's funny when people hate Vista and love Windows 7 because these systems have a same core (NT 6.0 in Vista and NT 6.1 in Windows 7) - just a few slight differences but nothing more. They just can't be different like Win2k (NT 5.0) and Windows XP (NT 5.1).

Yep, Windows 7 requires 2 times more memory than even Vista (1Gb vs 512Mb)

I like windows 7 myself also but windows 7 is built from the vista core just done right finally.

and XP was built from windows 2000 most drivers for 2000 worked fine for XP before sp2 when Microsoft changed to much stuff around.

Thanks for the review. I switched to Mac years ago after having tons of problems with Windows and have been happy ever since. However, I am thinking about getting a new laptop and am considering a Windows based one now that 7 is out. Still pretty hesitant given MS's terrible track record over the recent years but 7 looks like it might actually be decent.

Haters love to point it's from the same core but that doesn't make it the same garbage OS.

"Haters" is a gay word :winkwink: The straight males (persons with a male brain and male logic) can't hate the operating system because it's just a binary code :) They can discuss it's features (arguing with facts) but not hate or love it - Windows is not a woman.

You are correct sir... I upgraded to XP from 2K because of this very reason. But I waited for SP1 on XP because it took until then for them to work out major kinks including massive driver problems.

Yes, Vista and 7 share the same core. It was the ME like bells and whistles in Vista that sucked, not the underlying core. I actually liked many things about Vista except for it was as if Microsoft was trying a second time to cram ME down our throats.

Windows 7 seems to have stripped away the crap-shit and left us with a usable operating system that is working flawless for me. It is doing everything I ever wanted. Granted a lot of it has to also do with my upgraded computer. 4 cores, 6 gigs of ram.... I love this fucking thing now. Which is more than I could say about the computer running XP...

Ohh.. and no more patching TCPIP.SYS... they did away with the half open limits (or at least how they worked)... I can download shit at 1.8mps now without patching and be connected to 100 people...

BTW, Vista works fine for me, and I have 5 systems rendering Mental Ray 3d animation.

I have been very happy with it from day one. MS really did an amazing job on this OS for once.

Dont want to turn this into a PC-Mac war but everywhere I look I see Windows users celebrating that MS has FINALLY done a good job. I was fed up with MS years ago and switched to Mac, been very happy ever since. Apple's OS are so good, you really dont even need or want to upgrade to the next version.

My question is, if you are tired of Windows and its problems, why do you put up with it? Why not switch to Mac or Linux? Its like owning a Kia that always gives you problems but you still keep it. You would think most people would get rid of it for a Honda. Sure, the Honda might cost a bit more, but you know its going to be reliable and a great car.

You did the upgrade install? Are you running 32 bit or 64? I've been running 64 on a machine that was previously a 32 bit build, with 8 gbs ram, and the difference in speed and performance is night and day. I'm actually pretty blown away by this operating system.

You need 8GB of RAM for this thing to run well? Hope not. The laptops I am looking at are only 4GB of RAM.

My laptop running 1 gb of ram also handles it very well... but my monster machine used for video editing performs twice as fast as it did under vista 64.

Nice review. I remember when I worked for an IT dept. years ago we used to have NT on our machines and it was solid.

I'm running vista 32bit on a 64machine was waiting to use my 64bit for windows7.

So your saying the upgrade went fine? isn't it usually better to do a full fresh install?

Not to mention that the stability comes from darwin / bsd.

In any case, without trying to be inflammatory - serious question for you to ponder..

Mac: The OS only has to handle one set of known hardware configuations.
PC: The OS has to handle literally billions of hardware configurations, dating back over 15 years.

The sheer task of maintaining compatibility etc on Windows is amazing - honestly, amazing.

Good review, thanks for the info! I'm finally happy on Vista 64, so don't know if I can justify an upgrade at this point. ie: is it *that* much better, or just kind of better?

Whats even more hilarious is the stats. Mac users have more income, more toys, better cars, better sex lives and generally have spent a lot of time using windows as well. The guys calling them fanboys on the other hand have very limited experience with a mac.

The latest research in consumer purchasing behaviour also point out that mac guys are more likely to own multiple machines and operating systems including a windows pc, and more gadgets around the home.

Sadly, people who bash macs usually fall into this stereotype: They have not used a mac in the last 5 years, only know windows and pc's, and are ignorant low income idiots running on some cheap junk from china they put together in their basement.

But hey, if bashing on people who are generally better than you in most ways makes you feel better about your substandard computing experience, troll on. :thumbsup Please don't ever consider buying a mac, we're very happy not having you on our platform.

I've had the pleasure of using Windows 7 and its actually quite a great OS by microsoft standards- and does have the same feel of the old NT Core. It boots nicely on my Macbook Pro, and it runs games at a slightly quicker FPS, but chews the battery and startup/shutdown times are noticeably slower.

Hopyfully, Window 7 on an i7 920 overclocked to 3.5 play nicely.

Planning for an upgrade.

I did a clean install on a nightmare Dell laptop and it found EVERY driver right down to the thumb print reader and was installed and ready to go in under 30 minutes. It has run flawlessly since the install, and before this it was a constant headache.

Yep. I have my I7 920 clocked up an an Asus P6T Deluxe board and it is amazing. The fastest desktop I have ever used.
