Joe Satriani sues Coldplay over Viva la Vida.

I forgot about Joe Satriani for the last 10 years but I guess he's suing Coldplay saying their song was a rip off of his. Who knows, but the two songs actually sound pretty good together. At one minute they play both at the same time and it matches up perfect.

Someone gonna be paying out.

Now imagine if Coldplay hired Joe Satriani to play guitar on their studio albums. Then they would sound a whole lot better. :thumbsup

Redrob 12-06-2008 04:01 AM

Opps......damn good guitar licks.

RedShoe 12-06-2008 06:29 AM

Satriani is playing guitar. The coldplay queer is singing in the same melody as Satrini's guitar, but that's it.

The drum beats are the same, but they're just standard drum beats nothing special about them.

We all know the "Happy birthday song" is copyrighted, yes? So if someone plays the tune of happy birthday on say a piano or guitar are they in copyright violation?

O MARINA 12-06-2008 06:35 AM

I like Viva la Vida

the problem without your analogy is you use a public domain song instead of an actual copyrighted work. the "melody" of the song can be what differentiates songs... and is what gives an author credit. The melody of a song is what makes it unique.

satrianis music like many others, often doesnt even have words, it is still copyrighted. The "Happy Birthday" song cannot be used to justify copying someones music, as it is public domain, it is in fact the most recognized song in the world... however, the melody is clearly credited to Patty Hill and Mildred Hill in 1893.

On separate note, anyone should be able to protect their music.

Altwebdesign 12-06-2008 07:09 AM

good. coldplay are shite!

Mr Pheer 12-06-2008 07:11 AM

The difference between Happy Birthday and Joe Satriani's music... nobody is singing happy birthday for commercial gain. Joe writes his own music and I dont blame him for being pissed when someone rips it off. I met the guy a month ago, seemed so nice and down to earth. Couldnt imagine him ripping off anyone, so of course he's pissed.

spanky part 2 12-06-2008 07:55 AM

There is nothing original anymore. Where do you get your ideas from? You think it's original, but the inspiration came from some where. Statriani is a has been and never was. Sour fucking grapes, he's just pissed he can't sing.

Jman 12-06-2008 08:07 AM

Good for Joe, hope he takes them all the way. Coldplay sucks... never seen what was the big deal about them.

a has been and never was? Someone has been feeding you bad information. And he isnt a singer, why would he need to sing?

The guy cant sing but he sells out all his shows, I think that says something.

Selling out the local corner bar doesn't really count.

Jim_Gunn 12-06-2008 08:23 AM

Wow, pretty close. I remember George Harrison got sued and lost that case a bunch of years ago for supposedly unintentionally copying the melody of some doo wop song. This case is roughly similar. I have to say the Coldplay song sounded better with Joe's guitar playing. They should make a monetary settlement and have Joe play guitar on all their songs. :-)

lol! He's not really a vocal singer, he does his singing through his guitar playing.
Say what you want about his abilities, but ColdPlay is gonna have to cut him a check!

Joe Satriani is a talented guy who has had a long career doing what he loves and that career that keeps continuing despite changes in music and technology. I bet he is quite satisfied with his career, lifestyle and his money.

Why the hate? I am not such a huge Satriani fan really, nor have I ever seen Satriani in concert. But in a day and age of bands and artists that have one hit wonders and short little careers that end abruptly as tastes change, any musician with a modest following who can sell CDs, travel all around the world playing his own music, create his own successful tour, license his music for video games and other avenues, receive 14 Grammy nominations and sells more than 10 million albums worldwide is doing quite well. Especially considering that he's mostly an instrumental musician! Are you more successful as a webmaster than Satriani is as a musician? If not than shove your childish opinion up your ass.

yep it was my sweet lord and hes so fine. I think what happens is you hear music and even if you are not listening if its on your brain picks it up. Like when Paul McCartney came up with the melody of yesterday he would play it for everyone he knew and ask what song is this because the melody came so easy to him. I think coldplay will be paying some money.

~Ray 12-06-2008 09:01 AM

I bet the guitar player for Coldplay feels like a goober after hearing Satriani playing their music like he should have been playing all along :2 cents:

nilly vanilli won a grammy so how good can satriani be?

TheDoc 12-06-2008 09:39 AM

It's close but it isn't the same, you can very clearly here the difference when the Satriani's starts to play. The Cold Play song doesn't follow the same up beat, it's close but it is different.

I'm going to bet when you lay these down on digital you will see the difference, and the difference has to be what.. 10%? A few chords or one strum different, and that is clearly heard in the over lay of the song.

I didnt realize the House of Blues here in Vegas was the local corner bar, but perhaps you know better? Nah...

And yes I've been a fan since the 80's. Good music is timeless. Its mostly the trendy, immature kids that pretend to like something today because its popular at the moment, and then show disgust for it when the next big popular thing comes out. Are you that kind of person?

stevo 12-06-2008 11:45 AM

Very similar melody. But the YouTube sample above slowed down Joe Satriani's portion by 2x or 3x. The tempo is actually very different. It's way too fast to play along with the Coldplay tune.

LadyMischief 12-06-2008 12:15 PM

That's a lot like hat other band, trying to remember the name, that got sued by Aersosmith because they used parts of one of their songs in the tune, and they were forced by Aerosmith to give ALL the proceeds of their record sales to charity.. what a pisser.

CarlosTheGaucho 12-06-2008 12:16 PM

Well I am not too excited about this moaning faggot pseudo rock movement neither.

Anyway these things happen, you actually have a chance, even unintentionally, that your riff will be very close to something that was recorded already, and maybe their composing dude heard this song, forgot about it and then some time later he came with a brilliant riff / theme for a song :)

I guess they'll settle that out of court.

More interesting would be if one Sgt. moaning faggot lonely heart's club guitar band sued another Sgt. moaning faggot lonely hearts club guitar band, they all sound the same anyway.

This is what I'm talking about:

http://madalin.eu/wp-content/uploads...e_republic.jpg

They're trying to look civil and they have so much love to give!

Agent 488 12-06-2008 01:02 PM

wasn't there another band that was suing coldplay for the same thing?

Agent 488 12-06-2008 01:11 PM

yeah there were sued by creaky boards.

starpimps 12-06-2008 01:13 PM

you guys got it all wrong, kanye west "produced" the track. Making it ok lol

CaptainHowdy 12-06-2008 01:35 PM

Herb Kornfield 12-06-2008 02:09 PM

You are locked in a room with Osama Bin Laden, Hitler and Chris Martin from Coldplay.

You have a pistol with only 2 bullets ... who do you shoot?

Chris martin twice to make sure he's dead

LOLOLOLOLOLOL

FUCK YOU COLDPLAY.... I think a fair settlement is their music being banned from the airwaves forever ...............
