Yep cuil has been in beta for what seems like forever. I remember talking to one of the programmers at an SES conference last year and the guy just couldn't stop grinning

but really ... I doubt they will upstage google... what will happen is that they will force google to finally evolve the way it does search si ce cuill can care two cents about backlinks when calculating serp positions and brings a web 2.0 interface to search

the key will be in the young and college crowd... if cuil can promote a rebellious or cooler than dads search engine attitude among the young then yeah google would have a serious problem 3 or 4 years from now. But yeah this is definitely something to watch

as long as the VC money keeps rolling in and she dosent give in and fold with a sell to google

munki 07-28-2008 08:24 AM

Interesting...

tranza 07-28-2008 08:28 AM

Very interesting!

WiredGuy 07-28-2008 08:41 AM

Maybe its because of all the press they're getting today but the server seems very slow in getting responses when doing searches.

fallenmuffin 07-28-2008 08:48 AM

The results suck from the few searches I've tried.

Thurbs 07-28-2008 08:49 AM

im sure google does not overlook anything considering how they came from a time when Yahoo was the word, and the others were on decline.

however, I'm sure if its really that functional, they'll adapt.

Strickie 07-28-2008 08:54 AM

Sounds like they have a great team, it will be interesting to see what happens.

pornguy 07-28-2008 08:55 AM

Its not only slow, but is giving some strange results, and sometimes saying that there is nothing for the search term, then if you hit search again, it gives the results.

Trax 07-28-2008 09:00 AM

lame, very crappy results
also hate the output

polish_aristocrat 07-28-2008 09:03 AM

not really a good domain name IMO

Babaganoosh 07-28-2008 09:04 AM

So far the results are pretty good. Try searching for something other than porn. Those results are shitty.

I've been searching for a decent sqlite gui like phpmyadmin for mysql. I found one using cuil this morning.

Like "google.com" is? Remember what you thought first time you heard of it?

TheStout 07-28-2008 09:06 AM

Opened thread - Read first post - Read the article - Go to cuil.com - try a search - read the rest of the posts on gfy - wrote this post - checked email - Still waiting for results. lol I think Google is safe at least for today

boneless 07-28-2008 09:12 AM

slow, crap results, and filled with spamresults, tat sums up my experience with cuil, ill stick with google for the time being ;)

Eman - PG 07-28-2008 09:15 AM

culi.com is a porn site hehe

Evil E 07-28-2008 09:16 AM

if you do a search for "cock faggot" you'll see how the results are not only inaccurate, but the safe mode doesn't work.

Well the reason google took their market share is because they were really accurate. They were the first true search engine that really gave good results. The page was simple, no bells and whistles, but it just worked.

Difficult to beat them now. I must admit there are some SERP are spammed now because of their value which diminishes the quality of their search results but you can still find pretty much what you are looking for.

BradM 07-28-2008 09:26 AM

Seems their servers suck. If they can't handle a little press how do they plan on beating google? lol

xmas13 07-28-2008 09:29 AM

Google is more than a simple search engine, we are not in 1998 anymore.

Nowadays Google is a dictionary word, deep pockets, the us government, a massive network of supercomputers.

xmas13 07-28-2008 09:31 AM

Google = web search, web search = Google.

Sosa 07-28-2008 09:31 AM

Built by four ex google employees. Give them some time and see what happens I suppose.

xmas13 07-28-2008 09:33 AM

I've only known two search engines in my internet life. AltaVista and Google. Most people only know Google.

xmas13 07-28-2008 09:35 AM

Do you remember excite.com, altavista.com etc?

xmas13 07-28-2008 09:37 AM

The cemetery of web search is already full but I'm sure we can make room for yet another site. :))

Brujah 07-28-2008 09:39 AM

very slow.. but results looked good.

CS-Jay 07-28-2008 09:40 AM

ouch!

Every once in a while you make an intelligent observation.

People will go once and see scraper spam on page 1 and never go back.

PR_Sebas 07-28-2008 09:55 AM

this is supposed to challenge google ? first day of full release and i can't even process one search ? this is just another snap, powerset WHATEVER, nothing is topping google for more than a few years...

shadowsdrop 07-28-2008 09:59 AM

Interesting! There's always better every now and then. A thing to llok forward to.

baddog 07-28-2008 10:01 AM

Well, 3:4 results have us in the top 3 results, but it looks like they have a lot of work to do.

Cyndalie 07-28-2008 10:14 AM

Competition is good!

ADL Colin 07-28-2008 10:16 AM

Similar results to google for the few test searches I did.

Might as well just use wikipedia.

I used to swear by hotbot and webcrawler :thumbsup

Doctor Dre 07-28-2008 10:18 AM

I've searched for my sites... couldn't even find them.

Sites that were using the name of my websites in it came up higher.

What is worse, is that the totally unreleated ones (just using the name of the site as an account on another site) came up higher.

Hell I'm not talking about small fries, I'm talking about a domain that get 3 to 4 millions page views per day.
