StumbleUpon passed 5 million users -- Anyone on this??

Stumbled Upon StumbleUpon yet?

StumbleUpon, the site that discovers web sites based on your interests, learns what you like and brings you more, has reached five million users and soon five billion stumbles...No small feat! Do I smell targeted traffic, anyone?

Is anyone getting traffic from here?

Jace 04-24-2008 06:28 AM

no, there is no traffic there, ignore please

mona 04-24-2008 06:29 AM

really?? That's too bad...

tranza 04-24-2008 06:39 AM

I searched for the term "porn" and only 1 guy came up: http://shipmatecharles.stumbleupon.com/tag/porn/

TheDoc 04-24-2008 06:40 AM

aye, I have a couple of accounts on SU, one for adult and non-adult. I have been using SU since early 07, I recently setup a new account that doesn't include my name it :)

http://awskills.stumbleupon.com/public/ - Here is my new profile, hit me up!

viencarl 04-24-2008 06:44 AM

you just waste your time :):):)

TheDoc 04-24-2008 06:44 AM

It's not packed with porn but it does have porn. Nothing really that hard, mostly softer style porn. But it's all based on rates/votes, so if it's hot - it will get traffic.

A few random stumbles produced...

It burns the hell out of time but what I found, read, learned and experienced with SU is far far far greater than any other social site I have used.

It's the only 'hobby' I have ever had that sent me traffic back :)

I don't consider SU to be a traffic bomber - 7-15k uniques over a week isn't something I run off and rave about. I have seen hundreds of people post SU stats inside of SU, it's a social system that also sends traffic - not a traffic sending social center.

Ignore me? :( I wanted to put this out there since a lot of mainstream social networking sites, like MySpace and Facebook, are beginning to ban/filter naked images, etc. Also, a lot of programs are telling their affiliates to NOT advertise on those sites, since it could get them into legal issues.

Webmasters are constantly talking about lower conversion rates and the like, and with less options out there that are used by the masses, I would assume that any help would be welcomed!

He's saying there's no traffic there in much the same way WiredGuy says there's no money in SEO.

As in, yes there is, but don't tell anyone so you can keep it all for yourself.

Klen 04-24-2008 08:24 AM

No traffic?Strange.Well atleast it can be used for seo purposes.

Magnus 04-24-2008 08:27 AM

Canadian start up that got funded in Silicon valley since the VC milk money in Canada went sour.

That's the thing, SU is nothing like SEO or any other traffic source. You DO NOT want to keep it to yourself. While it can be spammed - it's not something that is going to get overran with spam. The more people the use it overall, the more we will all gain from it.

SU should not be looked at as a traffic source, it's not a traffic a source. It's the ultimate learning center and way to surf the internet, and if you like all the social stuff it has that too and then some.

Does it send traffic, Yes - and it can send lots.
Is it filled with surfers that are going to flood your porn site? No - not even close.

It's not a steady traffic system since it's based on votes / ratings / comments, ect.. and it's not like you can just submit all your shit and it do anything at all. Things that get a couple of votes, even 10-20... don't really gain you that much traffic. So to 'really' get traffic you have to actually create something that a huge range of people around the world will love enough to actually vote it up a lot.

Their is no logical reason to down play SU..

CyberHustler 04-24-2008 08:37 AM

Did sarcasm go extinct?

RichDad 04-24-2008 08:41 AM

I joined because I see other people is doing so. Of course I do get some traffic from joining this program. They are growing fast and is one of the top 10 website for year 2007.

actually, it has been the history of GFY that something gets posted, everyone runs to it, and spams it to all high heaven or does other nasty tricks with it, and ruins it completely for everyone

if there is a way to ruin it, porn guys will

And don't try to pollute a great service with crap. I happen to love stumble and would rather people didn't submit their splogs and other assorted horseshit there. If you have something QUALITY that people would enjoy seeing, then fine, submit it.

Anyone that knows how to spam, or build automated systems to spam, already knows about SU. It's on every forum, every blog, every other social site, that any person with enough skills to really spam SU, has already found SU. SU isn't new anymore.

And SU has a great deal of spam on it, it just doesn't matter. It has to be popular to take off to gain any real traffic, that will convert. Spamming a bunch of trash on SU isn't going to make you a dime. Unlike spamming a bunch of profiles, links, ect on myspace or even youtube - which can have instant or long term results if you get lucky.

If you submit a bunch of a good articles, lots of sites, and actually contribute solid material - even if it's all on your own domain networks, you will benefit from it. And any info like that is worth being on the network.

People do report spam on SU too, I have seen it one day and gone the next. So setting up profiles and voting through your own shit, doesn't take long to spotted as a spammer. And each profile would have to contribute, vote, and be active to gain traffic too. And with the overall amount of people voting things up, down, reporting spam, ect.. the network cleans out really fast.

I report spam every time I find it - I suggest everyone else do the same.

kristin 04-24-2008 10:44 AM

I just like using it ... I've found some of the most random and interesting sites.

you just sound like a sore loser in this post.

if you're in the spam game and you jump on the train too late and dont make enough $ thats yer own fault.

if someone else comes into your biz area and takes over and does it 2x better than you and you get squeezed out, you did something wrong.

:2 cents:

there are 3 billion people on the internet and xx million methods and ways to get traffic from them. enough $ for everyone! but what "ruins it for everyone" is greed and capitalistic instincts of others.

the best thing about SU is that people will spend a large amt of time on it. I have spent a few hours just clicking thru and finding crazy stuff. the loyalty/bookmarkerish type surfer amt is high.

well, that is fine and all, I still stand by my original statement, if there is a way to ruin it, porn guys will

too many other sites like it have been ruined because of people posting shit on gfy or running to every forum to tell everyone about "this new great site to post your porn too". there are a few that come to the top of my mind right away that used to allow porn and now have blocks on any and all adult terms DIRECTLY due to people spreading the word on porn forums

I have been enjoying the benefits of su for quite a while now, luckily there are new and innovative ways beyond su that do the same thing, but better

Every social network was getting spammed far before it was ever posted on GFY. GFY is not some central board for spamming webmasters, it's not even an information center. It's a slander board and known exactly for that. 99% of webmasters don't spam, and the 1% that do - don't read gfy for information.

I can 100% guarantee you everyone on this board that spams at the upper level methods needed for SU - already knows about SU. My first SU account was an invite from a BH forum, which explained how to spam SU back in early 07.

paymeback 04-24-2008 11:08 AM

this thread delivers comic relief

Elli 04-24-2008 11:24 AM

I've had an SU toolbar for two years now I think...

no traffic tho ;)

TheDoc 04-24-2008 11:33 AM

Seriously hit me up people.. http://awskills.stumbleupon.com/public/

Add me as a friend, send me an email in the system, trade some links.. whatever! As a large group working together we can use the system to benefit each of us. So hit me up and let's get started.

fluffygrrl 04-24-2008 03:56 PM

I wasn't really impressed, put 2-3k stumbles on a few pages, got a ton of traffic, turned out to be worse quality junk traffic than what digg usually sends out, 1.5 second attention span 13 year old kids that dream of one day running their own tube site.

GrouchyAdmin 04-24-2008 04:03 PM

I like pie.

papill0n 04-24-2008 04:07 PM

SU is really cool actually. It would be a shame if it was ruined with crap.

TTiger 04-24-2008 08:19 PM

im getting good amount of traffic on my mainstream blog from stumble!:-)

What kind of shit? I'm using SU in the exact method it was designed for. It's a social site built on making friends, sharing, voting, rating, comments, groups, ect.. what I'm asking for is exactly what the system was built to do.

RichDad 04-24-2008 10:23 PM

I am using it and its really good for getting traffic

GrouchyAdmin 04-24-2008 10:23 PM

You're wanting people to thumbs up or recommend sites they wouldn't normally recommend. THAT is the kind of shit I don't want to see happening on stumble. Abusing the system to promote lackluster sites is NOT what stumble was created for.
