Getting wisdom teeth pulled...

I finally need to pull them out...any words of advice in terms of the day after?

Should I be scared?

Brad Gosse 09-06-2006 12:56 PM

I have been avoiding this forever because I am a wus. Good luck :)

Libertine 09-06-2006 12:57 PM

Be glad. The damn things are a pain in the ass. My dentist wants to wait for mine to come out a little further before pulling them out, all the while leaving me in pain :(

Anyway, good luck!

I find the worst is the puffy feeling from the drugs the stick in you. I will hurt a bit, but it'll be over quick.

godisdead 09-06-2006 01:16 PM

If you have a good dentist, this is less bad that everyone makes it seem. You'll have to cool your cheeks and not eat solid food for a few days. Otherwise your cheeks will swell and you'll look like a hamster. But this won't happen if you do it right. Cool it and there will hardly be any pain or swelling and you'll be ready in a few days. :)

I have to see an oral surgeon this month. Last month mine were hurting big time. I had an infection too which is all cleared up fortunately.

wdsguy 09-06-2006 01:23 PM

take painkillers afterwards, you will be fine.

bknoob 09-06-2006 01:25 PM

if the wisdom teeth grew vertically, it should be an easy pull.... but if they grew horizontally because you didn't have enough gum space, they have to carve it since its under your skin and that is pretty painful and very bloody.

Mine was the 2nd situation. Not a fun experience :( Good luck!

Ask for 1-day antibiotic to avoid infection - start eating zink and strong c-vitamins already days before for better healing - avoid nicotine at the day and 48 hrs after - do not eat warm food same day - do NOT suck on straw or drink from bottle, or u might loose the blodclot and get dry socket..that hurts more than u can imagine..even morfin does not take that pain :Oh crap

Tom_PM 09-06-2006 01:30 PM

Day after and several days after, just eat gently. I recommend things like oatmeal, tomato soup. Anything that you dont NEED to chew. Give those gums a good chance to heal :) Doc. will tell ya.

Sosa 09-06-2006 01:32 PM

I felt nothing, they knocked my ass out. You will get some pain killers so just take a few of them and you will be ok.

blazi 09-06-2006 01:34 PM

I would not panic, might be a bit sore for a few days but nothing critical as long as you follow proper advice

Deraj 09-06-2006 01:34 PM

Don't sell your vicodin.. you will need them ;)

The actual procedure isn't too bad because you're numbed up, but the recovery fucking SUUUUUUUUUCKS!!!!!

Your face swells up like you're one of the Chipmunks, it feels like you've been hit in the face with a business end of a shovel, chewing sucks because you've got 4 fresh incisions in the corners of your mouth and in general...the pain is just about the worst I've ever experienced.

Had a script for percs and vicos and they didn't help at all.

Good luck. It sucks.

Go to an oral surgeon, not a dentist. Get them all done at once. Enjoy your 2-5 days of sleep, 7-Up and soup.

:winkwink:

heh. I'm going to an oral surgeon, and getting them all out. 2-5 days eh? Should be called a vacation then ;)

Vitasoy 09-06-2006 01:54 PM

Take a lot of painkillers and good luck

Stamen 09-06-2006 02:17 PM

It's not that bad, I went to a dentist, so I had to stay awake for the procedure and it didn't bother me much.

Your mouth will swell up alot afterwards, but as long as you keep it clean with a saltwater rinse and avoid drinking from a straw your mouth should heal up pretty quickly.

I would say the worst part is the pain that happens when the local anethetic wears off and you are still waiting on your pain medication prescription to be filled. Once you get the pain meds its smooth sailing.

( they were breaking my jaw and poking into nasel cavitys when i got mine out)
All I can say is good luck :winkwink:

i had one like that one and another one that was normal , but mine wasnt so bad , they smash it to bits then suck out the pieces ( i think ) the other one they just pulled

Peaches 09-06-2006 05:31 PM

I bruised up all up and down my neck but I bruise easily :)

It's been 20 years since I had mine done. Be sure to irrigate the holes/pits/whatever as much as possible. I found that getting two small ice packs and using my robe belt to tie them to my jaws helped tremendously :)

E$_manager 09-06-2006 06:16 PM

I don't have any still, so no advises about that.

reynold 09-06-2006 06:22 PM

Good luck. I hope painkillers work well for you. :)

Sandee_Westgate 09-06-2006 06:30 PM

Good luck! You're braver than I am! :thumbsup
I've been meaning to get mine out for some time now, and I just procrastinated this far. (I'm 27 now) They say the younger you are the better. I'm not in pain at this point.. but I know its coming soon. I feel for you girl!! It will be over before you know it. xoxo, Sandee

It was a peice of cake... I go there, get put to sleep, wake up with all this junk in my mouth and 10 mins later I am good to go :). the only sucky part was how this blood/spit mixture would build up and you would have to spit it out like every couple hours the first day, but after that its just soft smushy food for about a week and its not really bad at all..

yeah, I had that too. But the fact is as brutal as it sounds, your asleep the whole time. Apparently they had to chop mine up into pieces and remove it. I had all four top and bottom taken out at once, and you just wake up with all this tissue in your mouth, you replace it every once and a while and your golden. You will be laid out for about 1 day, and your face gets all fluffy but it didnt really hurt... The only crappy part is if you get over zealous with chewing hard food and you happen to bite down on your gums in the back, that hurts, but you learn quick :)

E$_manager 09-06-2006 06:48 PM

Good luck with it. Buy some painrelieve pills before.
