Who lifts weights?
If I'm working on my biceps and triceps, is it more productive to use more weight for X amount of times or less weight MORE than X amount of times?
|
My trainer has me doing both.
I will use a lighter weight first and do more reps per set. Then I move on to a heavier weight and do less reps for the second set. But, he also has me doing three different things...so it's a set of lighter weight, move on to a machine with lighter weight, move on to a half ball with lighter weights...that's one set. Then, the weight gets heavier and I do less reps for the second and third sets...... It's also the 'how' that counts. It's not how fast I can do it; it's how controlled I am when I'm doing whatever it is I'm doing. |
depends on what your goal is? :pimp
|
Do you take supplements or powders? (Whey, Creatine, etc.)?

if you wanna bulk up, use HIGHER weights and LESS reps you wanna get cut, use LOW weights and HIGH reps But.... I wouldnt suggest working the Bicep and tricep on the same day or same session. They are contradicting muscles. One push the others pull. :2 cents: |
I would mix it up 8 rep sets r sposed to be best so do them but I would do 12+ sets if you feel like it its all good for you
I think a lot of these tips like "only do x reps for x sets blah " are for "pros" and most people just wanna get strong not look like a steroid abuser |

whats your routine? |

you could do triceps and chest in one session then do biceps and shoulders/back on the next workout. Much better flow. |
Just fuck in the missionary position for about an hour.

What's best for chest? Bench press? |

That also depends on if you wanna bulk up or work every angle of the chest. For bulking up, i would just stick to the bench press. start with a weight you can do 5-10 presses with. Do like 5 sets. Once you feel like you can do more then 10 with the weight you started with, push up the weights till your doing only 5-10 max. Works well for me. You can also try using two dumbells (like 20 LB each to start with) and doing butterflys onthe incline bench, a flat bench and a declined bench. That shit works almost every lil piece of your chest. :upsidedow |
bulk = low reps high weight
cardio/endurance = high reps low weight you can't "cut" or 'tone' certain areas by working them out more... think about it this way, would you want the body of an endurance (long/endurance) or a 100M dasher (short/high energy) and there's your answer. |
try isometrics in your spare time at your computer or while stuck at a light in your car
|
Walk on your hands as much as possible.

Have you been talking to him? In the beginning, he told me, without dieting, I'd have a beautiful set of muscles under neath all that fat. :) |
First question I would get answered is what type body do you have Mesomorph, ectomorph etc...Some people are not capable of putting on more than a certain amount of size so lifting heavy will not do much except injure you. Talk to a trainer at the gym they can help you figure this out.
In the short run if you are looking for muscle strength for baseball I would do 8-10 reps at a medium weight for 3 days (break your routine into chest/tris, back/bis, legs and shoulders), taking one day off and then doing 3 days of light wieghts 12-15 reps. I play a lot of hockey and this gives me a good strength/endurance mix. I would also suggest at least 20 minutes of cardio (running or elliptical) a day to get your body in shape...and avoid slurpies :) Hope this helps. |
I do lots of curls every night - but real light weights (less than a pound) but the repetitions definitely help (of course so does the liquid in the "weights").

I use to lift 4-5 months ago, now I'm fucked... gotta get back in shape soon :D

Presses and Flys to build chest muscles.
No...that weight and reps bullshit is a myth. Just remain consistent. I do 4 sets of 8 reps. After my muscles get used to that I'll do 4 sets of 6 reps with heavier weight...simply to break up the monotony of lifting weights. It has nothing to do with definition. |
heavy weights and max 12 reps
