guys, do you throw out "bro" to just about anyone?

Seems that the term has evolved.. especially around here. First it was something that one guy would call another guy that he knew rather well.

Then it turned into something that one guy would call another guy if he wanted to suck up for what ever reason... I guess you could call it a term of respect.. I say it's a "he's important, I'm going to sound like I know him" kind of term.

Now it just seems that I see guys calling other guys "bro" despite having never met the guy or anything. They just say it... I guess to sound cool or something.

Here's a hint... if it's really blatantly obvious that you don't know the guy, and you call them "bro"... you don't look cool, you don't look like an ass kisser... you just look like you're trying to hard, and that's not usually a good thing. :winkwink:

aico 03-05-2006 07:46 AM

It's not "bro" anymore, it's "son"

Try to stay up with the rest of us...:winkwink:

slapass 03-05-2006 07:47 AM

I have been using "guy". Like, "Thanks guy". Slightly more personal and not as touchy as bro.

That's what you say to someone when you are trying to make them feel "little" or "younger" or what ever. It's supposed to make you goliath and them david. What they don't realize is that david owned goliath.

Deej 03-05-2006 07:58 AM

your right Stuart, I have only said Bro to one person in this industry.....that man has slept on my couch and has helped me double my business in the matter of a couple months.

if i feel the need to be frienly without proper knowledge of said guy, I use the word buddy.....

MaDalton 03-05-2006 08:00 AM

for me as non american it was very irritating in the beginning anyways. no one over here calls anyone his "bro" - especially when you don't know the person

webair 03-05-2006 08:12 AM

Violetta 03-05-2006 08:20 AM

Furious_Male 03-05-2006 08:26 AM

No I don't. rarely

Pornwolf 03-05-2006 08:34 AM

I prefer to use God with those that are close to me. "Whassup God? Or son works just as well. "Whaddup Sun?" Depending on the level of prominance the person holds in my life. When Speaking to Ron levi I usually say "Whaddup God?" But when speaking to sales rep #1229182...

If I choose to vary my greetings I may say "Whaddup dun?" Or "Whaddup Sun Dun?" Sometimes "Sun Dun Dun" is more fitting. It is a classier and more affectionate way of saying you are my bro.

(at least that's all true in Queensbridge)

Calling someone son is more paternal than biblical. Even if it were not, using the stories of an ancient book and thinking they really happened literally and apply to modern life is just a little bit jeuvenile. No water was turned to wine, the Red Sea was not parted and Jesus didn't rise from his grave.

The story of david versus Goliath is meant to give the little guy hope. In reality, the Smurfs is closer to the truth; Even when all 100 smurfs band together, they can only hope to escape from Gargamel, never to defeat him.

I am an american and it's irritating to me also. I think 90% of the people who've used the word 'bro' in conversation with me have eventually tried pulling some type of scam/deception at some point.

What does being a non American have to do with anything? The first people I heard calling everybody Bro were actually Dutch. I don't think it's specifically an American thing.

Way to stay on topic. I never mentioned the bible, I never mentioned anything "really happened"... I mentioned a story as an example. You're the one talking about cartoons. So who's juvanile?

That was fucking hilarious! I never expected to hear that one used in a biblical analogy! :1orglaugh :thumbsup

You never mentioned the bible, just David and Goliath? Where do you suppose that story came from?

Mr Pheer 03-05-2006 08:52 AM

I never have and never will call someone 'bro' and if I ever slip up and do it, I hope that person beats me to death with an aluminum baseball bat.

well, sorry then, didn't find anything about that in world history books...

people who called me "bro" were american or canadian mostly, that's how "I" experienced it. And "I" was irritated in the beginning, cause no one called me his "Bro" before. Even not the dutch people, who are my neighbour country.

And coming from a country where you rarely call someone by his first name before you know him for a while, it's a bit unusal to be called "bro" out of nowhere...

my personal thoughts...

MikeVega 03-05-2006 09:01 AM

What if Your introduced to someone and you shake hands and say " how's it going bro ?.. " because i do that a lot ... should I just say "Hey.. hows it going? .."

I'm just used to saying it .. now your making me think what the fuck i Said ..

jimthefiend 03-05-2006 09:02 AM

I don't call anyone "bro". I'm not hip to your lingo man.

devilspost 03-05-2006 09:06 AM

I call my bros niggas.

AlmightyZeus 03-05-2006 09:19 AM

Sometimes I use "Bro Bro". A double "bro" with the people I know and like.
"bro" with the people I don't know to well.

There's always Hi Man or Hey Guy! But that's plain boring.

I agree... Most of the time it sounds dumb if you don't know the guy. :Oh crap

Grapesoda 03-05-2006 12:01 PM

I'll stick 'bro' on a blurb if I have positive feed back . . if i think the guys a dick I'll just not respond, or use 'bud, dude,' . . not sure about you but in the culture I live in 'bro' is okay for 'casual' talk . . now if i said 'homie, homes, yo bitch' or 'road dog' that would mean we were in prison togther . .

over and out -bmb

Bastone 03-05-2006 12:01 PM

BabeHunter 03-05-2006 12:07 PM

Only to ppl i know

don't see the point in calling ppl i don't know "bro"

psili 03-05-2006 12:23 PM

I'm more of a "what's up man" type-of guy. Rarely do I throw out "bro".

drunken ninja 03-05-2006 02:11 PM

"bro" should only be used in two cases:

1. with people you feel are hip and cool as in "great idea, send me the specs bro"

2. to defuse a situation, generally combined with "yo" as in "yo, put down that knife, bro"

luv$ 03-05-2006 04:11 PM

I just call people whatever comes to mind. Why should what I refer to someone as in an unformal everyday conversation hold any significance?

You could give a guy a headache trying to keep track of the 1,277 different ways to piss someone off when just talking with them.

It's like women - why should guys make conversating with each other just as complicated as conversating with women. I thought we were supposed to be the ones who kept shit simple.

Brujah 03-05-2006 04:27 PM

I do it. I'm sure it depends where you're from. If you need to get so culturally biased because a person grew up using the term 'bro', because it's prevalent and acceptable in their environment then you've got bigger issues with yourself to deal with. I can see it especially if your phrase suits using the persons name but don't especially know it or want to use it.

Example; your nick is CumSwapper. "You around Cumswapper?" or "You around bro?" Considering you grew up using 'bro' and it's used by everyone else in your environment, you go with it. If someone else considers it ignorant, or other.. that's just unfortunate.

potter 03-05-2006 04:33 PM

I've started using it more after moving to Colorado. It's fairly common among the stoner/skater crowds here (cali influence I believe). You just pick it up eventually.
