What is the point of having kids?

I don't have a farm that needs free labor nor do I need a babysitter when i'm old. As such, I can't see why I, or anyone, would have kids.

Parents - what the fuck were you thinking ?

nofx 05-09-2005 04:42 PM

to carry on the family name

thats about it

LadyMischief 05-09-2005 04:43 PM

The sheer pleasure and experience of raising a child. It's a continual joy. But it's only for those who want it and are ready for it.

Ruining the prime of my life and 18 years of parental slavery just so I can get a few hospital visits at the very end when I'm about to die anyway doesn't sound like a good deal to me.

andrej_NDC 05-09-2005 04:57 PM

As Homer Simpson once said, you can learn them to hate the same things. :)

sumphatpimp 05-09-2005 04:58 PM

For you, yes, spare the world and don't breed. To answer your question, if everyone stopped having kids eventually there would be any people.

StuartD 05-09-2005 06:29 PM

As I am discovering more and more, the answer to this you can't be told... only experienced.

Head 05-09-2005 06:30 PM

You really should consider either

A: Suicide

B: Checking yourself into the nearest psychiatric hospital.

Seriously

It's to bad you're parents didnt share the same point of view. :2 cents:

Rochard 05-09-2005 08:00 PM

I had a child because it was "the next step". However, the amount of joy my child brings me a daily basis is something all of the money in the world cannot provide. It's something you cannot explain to someone who doesn't have a child.

ProjectNaked 05-09-2005 08:17 PM

KRL 05-09-2005 08:43 PM

There is no experience as joyous in life as having a child.

Nothing, nothing at all, comes close. I would lay down my life for my child without any thought whatsoever.

It is magical. It changes your entire perspective on everything.

Yes its challenging and frustrating too at times. Its also a lot of work and a lot of stress. But at the end of the day its worth it all.

I have one kid and hope I can have more in the years ahead.

It's the toughest job I'll ever have, but also the most rewarding.

you don't know the meaning of love, patience, fear, time management, negotiation or purpose of your life till u have a kid.

also, u were a kid once, wonder if your dad what saying 'you suck' ....hmmmm

iwantchixx 05-09-2005 08:56 PM

someone's mr negative here tonight.
Children are a great experience and I'm loving every minute of it, even when I'm in a flaming mad fit because my little one won't stop crying, I still remember how much I adore and love him.

I feel the same way about my son. :) I can't imagine my world without him.

I wanted to have a child because I loved my husband sooo much that I truly wanted to build a family with him. I wanted there to be more people in the world like him. My son is a real-life display of our love for one another.

Mako 05-10-2005 01:47 AM

No thanks. Most people desire children because they feel "it's the next step" or there is pressure put on them by their own parents looking for grandkids. Even worse, many incorrectly feel that a child will "solve" the problems already inherent to the relationship, which is like throwing a tanker truck full of nitro on a small campfire.

Bottom line: Everything nice you own gets destroyed/fucked up, nights out become a babysitter locating nightmare OR a rush-through-dinner-as-fast-as-possible to get the kids back home routine, and there is no possible comeback for "I'm sorry honey, no sucky sucky tonight, I'm beat from handling the kids all day". LOL, try and persuade a Mom that she's NOT too tired for some action from kid-duty, you might as well argue that Elvis is still alive.

And lets not even bring up the threat issue, the constant never-ending risk that at any moment they'll become a victim of some sort of disease/injury/child predator/car accident/poor judgement/etc, which is not just "18 years" but wondefully lasts the rest of your adult life.

It's one thing if you're very well off and can afford live-in nanny service, which buys you enough freedom that some semblance of normal life is possible, but unless you're in that 1/100th of one percent for income, your life as you know it is over the day the first one is born.

Not for me, and really when thought about rationally without emotion, not for most.

Then why did my friends cry when they found out she was pregnant and they weren't married ? They knew their life was over.

No you don't.
In this world there is no real "love" other than that between a parent and child.
All other "love" comes and goes like new sitcoms.
I don't have kids, but I have raised my nieces going on 12 years now.
The youngest, Hanna was neglected by her father growing up so she bonded with me and rather strongly...there were times when she was small she would say she wished I was her father...and there have been other times even as she got older and I worked a lot she'd say things like...she was mad like most little girls who's fathers worked too much.
Now she knows I'm not her father..but I'm trying to get to a point here.
I can honestly say that I have never felt that kind of unconditional love from anyone else in my life...and I probalby only see about a 10th of what she has for her mom.
You're their hero, their answer in times of trouble. It's very satisfying and very scary all at the same time.
