Better to be a paysite or a freesite...? Flame!
 

I'd rather be one of the top TGP's ANY DAY than one of the top paysites...

Free sites are a lot less work... fewer responsibilities... no customer support... no graphics/promotional materials necessary... no expensive servers to maintain... no problems with password hacking... no credit card fraud... you can work independently... nobody waiting for paychecks... don't have to worry about buying more content all the time... no building galleries... no making thumbnails... no transfering of tons of files... you spend less money... less legal responsibilities... and no need to pay an accountant.

Most of the money you make with paysites goes into buying more content, paying revsharers, credit processors, programmers, hosting companies, parties/promotion... not to mention if you want to grow you will have to pay for employees, an office, etc... 95% of my free site income is straight profit... I spend weeks even months without lifting a finger...

That's why you see a lot more free site people like Boneprone hanging out here on the boards -- because we can afford time to fuck around...

In other words, the "real bigshots" are too *busy* trying to keep up with their expenses to even enjoy the money. Admit it -- paysites are a dime a dozen -- everybody and their mom is pushing a paysite...

Everybody wants higher payouts so that's less profits for you big ballers -- aka Joe Paysite. Once there's a new program with better returns or better content -- the traffic goes elsewhere. Look at the original top free sites -- they are still around and growing... Can you say the same thing about paysites? To me they seem to come and go with the seasons.

I know you pretty well Fly, you and I traded many moons ago and you always seemed pretty smart but this is way out of left field.

The Pay site guys have way more money and the truly sucessful ones have employees to handle all those things you mentioned... and they don't hang out on the boards cuz it's more fun to cruise up the coast in their Porsche.

You are right that there is more to worry about but it's worth it, and there are paysites out there that have lasted thru the highs and lows. You know that.

Freesites compete with each other, but not as the paysites do.

Freesites depend on each other to build their traffic. TRAFFIC is what makes the money.

If it were not for the TRAFFIC of freesites the paysites would go broke.

It might have been nice in the early days to get tons of traffic from Search Engines, but those days are gone. You have to depend on each other to get those surfers into your sites.

Well I was just going out in left-field -- maybe so we could get into some of the dynamics of the relationships between freesites and paysites... past, present, future...

I guess there are programs like Cyberotica... but what are the success stories behind these companies? How much paysite income REALLY comes from free sites and how much comes from search engines?

And if were not for the paysites selling memberships that cost money, the freesites would not have a reason to exist. Who ya gonna sell to? Martha Stewart.com?

Fly, what you're failing to recognize here, is that paysites ARE the product. Paysites are the ones that generate all the income. Freesites, by comparison, are nothing more than a nice marketing tool for the paysites. Paysites can exist without freesites. They would simply have to find another method of marketing. But freesites cannot exist without paysites. Like I said, who are you going to upsell to?

You don't think paysites make phat coin? How do you think they are able to pay thousands and thousands of webmasters with freesites (marketing tools) to promote them? I would gladly trade the extra time involved in maintaining a paysite for the cash they generate and give up spending all day hangin' out on a messageboard. What a big sacrifice that would be.... I'll take the money.

The traffic is going to be there until the day people quit looking for porn. If the paysites told the freesites they weren't buying traffic any more the free sites would have two options.

1. Build their own paysite to send their traffic to.

2. Throw the traffic around among each other and have a good time watching stat counters instead of cashing paychecks.

There are many many people out there who don't run webmaster programs but who do have their own traffic, and they make more per sale than the ones who do run reseller programs.

Just because there are free sites and pay sites doesn't mean one can't exist without the other.

That's the point Ex... there's no need to worry about that because there ARE plenty of freesites out there to generate sales from. Why fix something that ain't broke? But to say that paysites can't survive without them is nuts... that's like saying [insert company example here] can't exist without three-fold color brochures.... NOT.
