Just cought a baby Squirrel what do i do?

I was on the phone looking out my window and I saw a cat dart up a tree and come bolting down with a squirrel in his mouth.

I was like no way so I ran out the door and chased the cat till he dropped the squirrel then i noticed it was a baby.
He can barely walk I put him back under the tree to see if his mom would grab him but never did so now i have him in a box.

what do they eat?

should I call aspca or take him to the vet?

zzgundamnzz 12-06-2004 05:04 PM

I think the cat ates its mom :(

mahoney 12-06-2004 05:04 PM

This reminds me of the episode of seinfeld when George had to pay for the squirrel to get surgery after he ran it over lol Yeah take him to the vet and then teach him how to water ski :1orglaugh By the way, why is it that you never see a squirrel taking a dump ? There are millions of
squirrels where i live but i have never once see them go poopy lol

alias 12-06-2004 05:07 PM

Fucking cats, see if there is a wildlife rescue group in your phone book or maybe call the town or some vets to ask if they know of one.

thats because they are always squatting

colpanic 12-06-2004 05:08 PM

Sounds to me like you have a new pet squirrel.

Name him fluffy.

(very nice of you though!)

:thumbsup

HammerTime33 12-06-2004 05:08 PM

Call th state wildlife management in your area, they will refer you to a wildlife rehabilitator.

Squirells do NOT make good pets, I tried.

BV 12-06-2004 05:09 PM

probably best to call animal control and they will release it in the proper way

i do know of two people that have raise them as pets, they scratch very bad though, not really a good pet idea

candyflip 12-06-2004 05:09 PM

If it was a black canadian squirrel, I'd have you send him to me.

I've always wanted one of those little darkies.

pxxx 12-06-2004 05:09 PM

Iwould call a local place or vet, and see if they can help you. I would keep it if it makes it and lives. Very nice of you.:thumbsup

Yea this cat was crazy then when he dropped it . he tried to go back and grab him. when i went looking for gloves.

He's all curled up looking cute. keeps squawking for his mom

pornguy 12-06-2004 05:11 PM

Gotta agree with Hammer on that one. The wild life people will even come out and pick him up, and yes, they will try to get him back to health.

That was very nice of you to do, but be careful they will bite. especially if they are hurt.

xenophobic 12-06-2004 05:11 PM

You need to check that the Cat's teeth did not cut it's skin, Cats have a lot of bacteria in their mouth, that often kills Birds, or anything else that gets cut by it's teeth.

Really i thought about keeping him.

If anyone is in tampa and wants him let me know.

only if you take good care of him :winkwink:

xenophobic 12-06-2004 05:13 PM

My friend actually rescues squirrels and from what I remember they need to be warm, what he normally did was microwave a sock with rice in it for about a minute (make sure it's not to hot) wrap it in a towel and put it in his box. They are very demanding they need feeding almost once an hour, and I believe their pee needs manual extraction (by rubbing) so you might want to give a wildlife group a call ASAP.

NaughtyRob 12-06-2004 05:13 PM

Cats suck.

Did you hit google for wildlife rescue in your area? my friend does this on his own time, and dollar -- and the animal shelter normally calls him to pick them up from them, I think almost all are run by indiviuals on their own time.

Tala 12-06-2004 05:20 PM

You must keep that baby warm! If it's cold, it will die.

Go to your local pet store and tell them you have a baby squirrel. They will give you a can of formula that will replace mother's milk. Do NOT feed him cow milk!!!!! It can kill him! They will also give you a syringe to use for feeding him. After that, it's just like a human baby: feed it every few hours, as much as he wants, (not more, though). If he lives through the night, then you've got a winner. See if you can release him into the wild when he's a bit bigger, (no longer on milk and learning to eat nuts and sweet fruit...if you're going to release him, make sure that you give him some nuts that are only partially cracked so he learns that he must get into the nut before he can eat it).

Flying squirrels make great pets, and domesticate easily, but the larger non-flying squirrels do NOT. See if you can get in touch with your local wildlife rehab. Good luck! :)

NOTE: Once he's warm and fed, he'll stop squeeking until he's hungry again.

Yea but he kinda freaks me out I don't know why.

He's ina a box with a towel now the only place thats open would be walmart right now. I wonder if they would have baby food

can they eat real baby food?

Missy 12-06-2004 05:28 PM

First of all, don't let the humane society or SPCA take it. They don't rehabilitate wild animals; they will just put it to sleep.

Secondly, it's cruel to keep wild animals as pets, so do as some others have suggested and contact a wildlife rescue group. They have people on call that you can leave the baby with. They will care for it until morning and then bring it to the shelter. I've had to do that a couple of times with birds that my cat has caught. They are trained for purposes such as these, and when the baby is well enough, they will release it back into the wild.

If you tell me where you live I'll look for a place for you...

LaurieX 12-06-2004 05:30 PM

There are programs available out there of people that foster Squirrels until they are healthy I know someone that used to do this but she is in Florida. I am sure if you call your local animal control unit they can assist you in finding one.:thumbsup

Greg Jacobson 12-06-2004 05:33 PM

let me know if you want a good recipe
