Chapman studied medicine at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. After mounting his own cabaret show, he was invited to join the Cambridge Footlight Society at the same time as first year student John Cleese. Eric Idle joined them one year later. (David Frost was secretary at that time)
He qualified as a doctor at St.Bartholomew's hospital in London. Chapman put his medical career on hold and joined John Cleese on his tour with "Cambridge Circus", which ran on Broadway in Oct. 1964. In England, he wrote for the "Doctor"-Series together with Bernard McKenna and John Cleese. He Met Michael Palin and Terry Jones while writing for "The Frost Report", but he also worked with Marty Feldman, Peter Sellers and Ringo Starr. At one Time he was writing for Monty Python, Ronnie Corbett and a "Doctor"-Series at the same time, together with Eric Idle and Barry Cryer. Later he worked with Douglas Adams, they collaborated on a BBC special titled "Out of the trees". After stopping drinking, he turned to his own project before filimg "Life of Brian": He produced, cowrote and starred "The Odd Job", which was released in 1978. After Monty Python, he created "Yellowbeard" (a pirate spoof), the cast consisting of John Cleese, Peter Cook, Cheech and Chong, Peter Boyle, Madeline Kahn, Eric Idle and Keneth Mars.
