Vendzilla 02-07-2015 01:45 PM

So what was Obama thinking?

First he compares the Islamic terrorist to the Crusades by saying ?Lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ.? at the National prayer Breakfast sounding like he is keeping Isis actions in perspective?

Second despite objections from our allies, Congress and former administration officials, the president seems to be pressing for a unilateral deal with Iran on its nuclear program. Obama appears willing to leave Iran?s nuclear infrastructure in place and accept at face value the Iranian government?s laughable assurances that it wants only peaceful nuclear technology.

Then third, the release of the president?s surreal, liberal dream-budget gives us a government blueprint that shows what he would do if he were King of America. Obama wants to reach into the pockets of U.S. companies everywhere, raise taxes on just about every form of wealth and spend more and more on social schemes that corral citizens into the care of the state and freely heap new debt on future generations.

Presidents are supposed to lead, guide and convince. Instead, Obama makes excuses for our enemies, ignores economic reality and acts unilaterally.

dyna mo 02-07-2015 01:50 PM

he thinks we all need a lecture from him. the problems with that are

1. we don't need a lecture on that shit

2. leaders give lectures.

  2. What could the USA threaten to do about the Iran nuclear position? Nothing more really than what has been done ... ...preemptively. The Iranians have been negotiating in bad faith using stall tactics -- that is obvious.

Historian Thomas Madden, director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Saint Louis University, writes that the "Inquisition was not born out of desire to crush diversity or oppress people; it was rather an attempt to stop unjust executions."

In medieval Europe, heresy was a crime against the state, Mr. Madden explains. Local nobles, often greedy, illiterate and eager to placate the mob, gleefully agreed to execute people accused of witchcraft or some other forms of heresy. By the 1100s, such accusations were causing grave injustices (in much the same way that apparatchiks in Communist countries would level charges of disloyalty in order to have rivals "disappeared").

"The Catholic Church's response to this problem was the Inquisition," Mr. Madden explains, "first instituted by Pope Lucius III in 1184."

I cannot defend everything done under the various Inquisitions — especially in Spain — because some of it was indefensible. But there's a very important point that needs to be made here that transcends scoring easy, albeit deserved, points against Mr. Obama's approach to Islamic extremism — which he will not call Islamic.

Christianity, even in its most terrible days, even under the most corrupt popes, even during the most unjustifiable wars, was indisputably a force for the improvement of man.

Christianity ended greater barbarisms under pagan Rome. The church often fell short of its ideals — which all human things do — but its ideals were indisputably a great advance for humanity.

indisputably? :1orglaugh

as if those ideals were invented by the Catholic Church - humanity didn't need the church to make advances, the church invented nothing that other civilizations hadn't already developed - obviously the Jews theologically, Christianity began as a peasant sect of Judaism with the same beliefs other than the belief Jesus Christ was the Messiah.

not saying Western civilization didn't advance under the Church, Russian civilization advanced under Soviet rule, social order is needed for progress.

I got the impression the author's argument is the church provided the organizational structure, due to its' being THe Catholic Church, needed for FORCE required to steer social order to prioritize things that progress it. herded and pointed the mob in the right direction overall, so to speak.

And?

The crusades were what? They were military campaigns sanctioned by the Catholic Church. They killed in the name of god. If you think about this, Obama is correct - Christians killed in the name of their god, not unlike ISIS is killing in the name of their god.

And?

Seems painfully obvious here that we need a different approach here because what we've been doing since the 1970s is nothing but utter failure. Let me put it to you this way - We can't kill them, so sooner or later we will have to make some kind of a deal with them. We cannot stop them from having nuclear power. And say what you want about Iran, but truthfully I don't believe they've ever attacked anyone. Ever.

?I don?t think the president knows very much about the crusades,? Thomas Madden, a historian at the University of St. Louis, told ABC News.

?He seems to be casting them as an example of a distortion of Christianity and trying to compare that to what he sees as a distortion of Islam in the actions of ISIS,? Madden said. ?The initial goal of the Crusades was to give back lands to Christians that been conquered, due to Muslim conquests.?

That's right, do exactly the opposite of what has worked in the past, I thought you read history?
Right now the corporate tax rate at 40 %, that's damn high, other countries that have lowered it have had good success with their economies. Did you know that Southern California Edison is laying off 500 IT people and replacing them with IT people in India? Why, because of cost, what happens when it gets more expensive to do business?

The U.S. is doing pretty good right now. I doubt obama had much to do with it but corporate tax is not likely to matter much.

there is truth to that but the Greeks and Romans and the Egyptians had structured and progressive societies, by antiquity standards, long before the Church was founded. the Jews who like to take credit for the 10 Commandments 'borrowed' them from the Egyptians and also 'borrowed' many of the moralistic stories/legends in the OT from other cultures - most obvious one is Noah and the Great Flood, a total lift from the Sumerian myth The Epic of Gilgamesh. The idea that these monotheistic religions civilized us is very debatable.

I don't know what the history of Western civilization would have been like in the absence of the powerful Church of Rome, whether we'd have been better or worse off. There's a lot of blood on the hands of Christianity throughout history right up until the present day.

Region is and always has been a fairytale for adults used to control the masses. Sometimes it can be used for good as in civilizing the masses and sometimes it can be used for bad as in waging wars. Regardless it's still little more than a fairytale for adults.

Modern political and social societies do not (*at least should not) behave like was done 1000 or 500 years ago. I guess the last throw-back was the Nazi Third Reich. The Islamic State (IS, ISIL, ISIS) are just the latest barbarians. The Islamic State will be destroyed like other barbarians and history will go on -- another barbarian regime will arise. The barbarism of the Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition is well known -- so what? It is not justification of the Islamic State's barbarism.

I can exterminate people because Hitler, Genghis Khan or Timour (Tamerlane) did? That is a ridiculous argument.

This is basically the same reason that the USA just does not nuke Iran -- it would be barbaric to exterminate a nation of 77.45 million people. Would ISIS if given a chance nuke the USA?

don't forget all of those social structures had religion at their core, plus they all crumbled and a lot was lost, enter the medieval period.

I don't think the point was monotheism in particular, more the structure that arose from religion, based on principles of goodness.

No, I wasn't wrong at all. The EXACT definition of the Crusades is:

The Crusades were military campaigns sanctioned by the Latin Roman Catholic Church during the High Middle Ages and Late Middle Ages.

It's the first sentence of the Wikipedia entry.

Christianity killed in the name of their god. Christianity was directly involved in warfare.

Yes, but businesses get to write off hundreds of thousands of dollars because they built a fountain.

What we are taxing businesses at and what they are paying is two vastly different things. I own multiple businesses and I write off everything. OK, here's the last 30 years

Hijacking of Americans (direct attack on the US) in 1979. I was off the coast for this one! It was called the Iran Crisis, I have a medal for being there protecting our fleet.

Action by its government directly and/or via its armed -Hezbollah- wing:
US Marine Barracks in Oct. 1983, killing 241 Americans and 58 French soldiers.
1984-8 string of hijacking US personell.
Bombing of US embassy in Lebanon in April 18, 1983, killing 63.
Bombings in Paris, France in 1985 and 1986. Dozens killed.
Attacking Israel since the 1980s via Hezbollah and Hamas terror "freedom fighting" Jihadi organizations.
Unsuccessful attempt to carry out attacks in Cyprus in 1988; a plot, foiled by Spanish police, to carry out attacks against Jewish targets in Europe in 1989; an unsuccessful attempt to detonate a car bomb outside a Jewish community building in Romania in 1992; and a planned 1996 attack, also foiled by police, on an Israeli institution in Paris.
1992 Bombing of Israeli embassy in Argentina. Killed 29.
1994 Bombing of AMIA Jewish community building, killed 85 and wounded 300, both, Iran and Hezbollah were charged.
July 19, 1994 bombing of Panamanian airline. Kills everyone (21) on board.
Killing of many American and British soldiers in Iraq (its trainors and weapons found there).
Killing of many of US, NATO soldiers in Afghanistan (backing Taliban).
Hezbollah "activities" in Somalia.
Many (Christian and pro western) Lebanese citizens fell victims to the terrorizing Hezbollah mob.
Use of Lebanese civilians, in its wars against Israel.
