Is gas siphoning on the rise yet where you live?

If it isn't I wouldn't be surprised if it's only a matter of time before it is.

Anyone have plans to get a locking gas cap? What other steps might you take to protect your gas?

One guy on another board remarked that while on a trip he gassed up and then hit a motel for the night, and when he came out in the morning his tank was dry. I'm thinking that from now on travellers should get in the habit of leaving their tank empty at night and gassing up in the morning when they're ready to hit the road.

Lastly, if you caught someone siphoning from your car, what would you do? Cops don't seem to do much about this sort of thing here, not enough of them to respond to every call.

Socks 04-30-2008 08:38 AM

At least in Toronto, the cops are obligated to respond to every single call made to them, no matter how ridiculous. You could call and say there are aliens having a party in the middle of the street, and by law they have to send a cruiser over to check it out (eventually).

Most peoples gas panel doesn't open short of someone prying it open with a screwdriver or something.. I guess it'll happen a bit more

Sansa 04-30-2008 08:47 AM

This brings on a business idea. Just like gas stations have a sign "teller does not have access to a safe" there should be a sticker saying "don't bother - this is a locking gas cap".

AdPatron 04-30-2008 08:47 AM

Around here hey are making holes in the gas tanks with pipes or something and getting the gas!!

Tom_PM 04-30-2008 08:47 AM

Cops dont do much? Hell with the way prices are going up, one tank of gas will be worth a felony before ya know it, heh.

What a terrible trend that would/will be. Moped sales must be set to take off again.

No, they don't. There was an attempted theft of my car a few years ago, I phoned to report it and that was that. No one came around at all. Apparently there are so many car thefts every year that the cops can't possibly respond to every "attempt" call.

If they start getting 50 calls a day about siphoning there's no way they'll be able to keep up.

I wouldn't be surprised if vigilantism doesn't go on the rise as well. People are getting frustrated with all the bullshit petty crime and property damage being done and nothing done about it.

Speaking of that, some of you might get a kick out of this...

if you haven't seen it before.

Could easily be applied to siphoning. :D

Hell, everyone's so damn honest around here (even the meth heads will admit to being meth heads) that I've had to go back home and get my wallet after putting a tank of gas in my car and no one blinked.

(it was a SERIOUS blonde moment "Where's my wallet so I can pay at the pump? Oh, it's probably fallen somewhere, I'll just pump first, pay later....Oooops!")

Yup, rural life is a helluva lot different than city living.

I think this is mainly an urban problem, but I'm sure it will start happening the odd time out in the country too. Best keep your guns oiled.

Really? What kind of car do you drive? I don't remember the last time I drove a car that had a locking gas panel.

Peaches 04-30-2008 10:17 AM

I remember ALL my Japanese cars in the 80's having a locking gas doors. IIRC, the 1990 Maxima I had did NOT have a locking door and I was surprised. None of the recent cars I've bought had the locking covers. It was never a hassle to use - it might be time to start putting locking tank doors on all cars.

Yes, the 80's, when we had a gas crisis.

I can see it becoming standard equipment around 2012.

x2 some cars have a panel that must be opened from the inside of the car.

But not most cars.

Also don't "most" cars now have a block in place that stops siphoning?

yes, I know some cars do . . . mostly older I believe.

And I seem to recall that they did out something in the tube to make it more difficult to siphon, but if gas can go in, it can probably come out.

rowan 04-30-2008 10:45 AM

My 2002 model has an electrically operated door so it needs a fair bit of force to get it open without a key. It also has baffles to prevent siphoning. Didn't stop some idiots trying.......

Much clearer than just saying "I agree with you" :D

I hear some thieves will pull your gas line if they can't get in through the cap.

Elli 04-30-2008 11:13 AM

Hrm, my car's door opens with just a finger, and the cap is attached with a plastic dongle to the car. No locking anything :(

Spunky 04-30-2008 11:35 AM

It seems like Catalytic converters are more attractive

I can't believe canadiantire.ca doesn't carry locking gas caps.

Neither does autopartsonlinecanada.ca. :(

Michaelious 04-30-2008 02:48 PM

I don't think it has hit the UK yet

Kudles 04-30-2008 03:14 PM

Thank god my neighborhood isen't like that

Brother Bilo 04-30-2008 03:20 PM

It's getting more and more common to see peoples gas caps hanging out of the door on my commute in the morning. A guy on my softball team said someone's gotten him twice now.

How long do you have until it does start happening?

I'm going to recommend that people start taking steps now in order to save themselves a possible headache in the near future. I'm sorry but no way in hell is the price of gas going to go up like it's been and there be NO rise in gas theft.

My car is already armed with an immobilizer and alarm, I will be buying a locking gas cap this week, and am urging my tenants to do the same.

No panic, just tired of fuckhead thieves getting the better of honest people.

farkedup 04-30-2008 03:56 PM

LMAO you think a locking gas cap will help you at all? regular screwdriver + hammer = POP its off/unlocked. As was already said many are just going straight to the tank...

raven1083 04-30-2008 03:58 PM

Thanks for that information! Nice post

Keep laughing goof. All that hammering with the screwdriver makes noise, and in my nieghborhood when it's 2-5 in the morning (when crooks mostly work) you can hear a pin drop.

And I'm a light sleeper.
