Syphoning gas hads been a rural problem for DECADES...

Once enough people have moved to protect the security of their gas gap the thieves will just move to punching a hole in the bottom of the tank. :2 cents: Won't be long before some company starts offering to retrofit stronger tanks, or some sort of guard over the top of the existing one. :2 cents:

Really? What kind of car do you drive? I don't remember the last time I drove a car that had a locking gas panel.

My benz had it, my gf's accura tl has it. The thing won't open unless you hit the lever in the car.

This brings on a business idea. Just like gas stations have a sign "teller does not have access to a safe" there should be a sticker saying "don't bother - this is a locking gas cap".

I'm also considering a little sign near my navigator mount saying "GPS navigator is NOT stored in the car"

Apparently those mounts are a magnet for smash and grab thieves, even if the device can't be seen there's a good chance it's in the glove box or somewhere inside the car.

Another idea: an alarm that can be installed inside the petrol door area that sounds if not deactivated

I had a Ford Focus as a loan vehicle recently and noticed that you couldn't open the petrol door when the passenger doors were locked. (Took me 30 seconds to figure that one out. :Graucho )

However it still has a little lip for you to get the finger around in order to open it, which would probably make forcing it a lot easier. The door on my car, which was forced, normally sits flush.

Here's what those assholes did to my door. It used to sit flush, and opened diagonally... they managed to pull the hinges a couple of inches outwards. Note the two dints next to it, I guess they slipped.

I never said it can't or hasn't happened in the country before, of course it has. But I think based on what country people are saying that right now it's more of a problem in cities. Not all, just more.

Am I wrong? Let's hear from some more country folk.

If someone in the country caught you siphoning off gas, they'd tell your Mamma. That's worse than telling the police.

fuel theft is definitely on the rise in rural areas, but it's different,. people are jacking fuel from sliptanks, farmer's private fuel tanks, and the big one around here, theft from the oilfield. there's a lot of big diesel trucks around here, and there's loads of "free" diesel if you know where to go get it, same goes for gasoline.

I used to own a '91 Aerostar as a spare utility vehicle that had an inner release switch for the little door to the gas cap. Thing is, a crook can still use their little door lever tool to break into your car and then flip the switch.

Best defense overall I think is to have a good car alarm along with an electronic immobilizer (a 3-point one, not a factory 2-point one), and a locking gas cap.

And a steering wheel club.

And a garage. (locked)

And a large attack dog. (or a bitchy mother-in-law living above said garage)

That ought to keep the little bastards away.
