Vote for your favorite. If I missed yours, sorry, this thing limits it to 20 entries.

CDSmith 11-30-2007 02:52 PM

Steve Vai didn't make the list?

No Peter Frampton? No Alex Lifeson?

They were on the short list, but I could only put 20.

I think I would have had Vai in there instead of ice cream boy Cherry Garcia.

CDSmith 11-30-2007 02:59 PM

Tom Scholtz fr Boston should be on there.

Why? Because he could play Zappa leads really well? Originality and singularity of style in my mind should take precedence over all...

TeenSluts 11-30-2007 03:00 PM

hard to pick 1. :(

i like jimi and gilmour

I would have had Vai in there instead of Leslie West.

I honestly can't pick from that list. Too much greatness.

He did more than that, and had/has both originality and singularity of style. Look at the guy's body of work for christ sake... http://www.vai.com/AllAboutSteve/bands.html How can you sum it up with only his Zappa stuff? His work on DLR's Eat 'em and smile album was incredible.

Why is Garcia such a standout guitar god in your mind? Beyond some fun little stoner tunes frankly I'm not seeing the genius there.

dig420 11-30-2007 03:21 PM

Did Malmsteen every make a record that actually sounded good?

Quick does not equal quality.

How can you choose between Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Hendrix etc? Where are the Allman Brothers and Lynrd Skynrd lol... There is no 'best' one, just the one you feel like listening to at any given moment I think. Once they reach a certain level it's just a matter of deciding which flavor you want.

Love his improvisation, use of dynamics and ability to play different styles from jazz to bluegrass.

Speaking of...Trey Anastasio should be on the list.

escorpio 11-30-2007 03:28 PM

Steve Winwood? Isn't he much better known for his keyboard playing?

dready 11-30-2007 03:28 PM

The thing with Jerry is; you either get it or you don't.

dready 11-30-2007 03:29 PM

Here's Steve Winwood playing with Traffic: https://youtube.com/watch?v=7_nwbTeIN4Y

Jim_Gunn 11-30-2007 03:31 PM

There are a lot of great guitar players on that list. Tony Iommi, Jimi Hendrix and David Gilmour are my faves on that list. But my all time favorite guitarist and musician is Bob Mould of Husker Du and Sugar fame, who is now a solo artist.

alexweb 11-30-2007 03:31 PM

Jimi Hendrix:thumbsup

pornask 11-30-2007 03:32 PM

Wow, some sucky guitarists on the list, yet greats like Steve Vai, or John Petruci are not there. WTF???

Voted for the best on the list - Joe Satriani. No contest.

Listen to Terrapin Station and tell me that Jerry can't hang with Vai, Belew, or even Malmsteen. Jerry also played on a ton of stuff outside the dead... check out his work with Ornette Coleman for example... Jerry is an innovator and a consumate stylist and completely unique. And I am a big fan of most of the players on that list... though I must say that I find Malmsteen boring after a listen or two.

MrKinkade 11-30-2007 03:36 PM

Randy rhodes hands down... not only is he a great metal rock guitarist but he was classically train and was solely but Ozzy ozbournes own mouth the man responsible for song writing and structure and help him develop as a singer and musician

Shagbunny 11-30-2007 03:39 PM

love David Gilmour and Jimmy Page.. had to go with Gilmour

One could say the same about virtually every guitarist mentioned in this thread. For example, lots won't understand why Page is in your list, probably because they aren't fans of Zep. Then out come the "you either get it or you don't" comments.

Your list is great, loaded with huge talent. I'm just tossing out a few names that I would of had in the top 20, that's all.

It's all relative and subjective to each individual's taste.

How about Michael Schenker? :D

Couldn't be closer to the truth.

Nice find! I love that tune and that is one stupedous version. :thumbsup
I still think of him as a keyboard player, though.

I didn't mean that as a shot... it's just my experience with him, especially the Grateful Dead. Some people can't stand his noodling. Most of my friends prefer his solo band because it's more straight ahead rock and roll.

I really should have had Steve Vai on the list, before Leslie West anyway. :)
