I know the ppl. damaged by much more scary and brutal war here in Russia (the guys who returned alive from Chechnya). They told me such a terrible things you will never see in the movies like "Hostel" etc. However I never heard dome one of them committed suicide. Some ruined themselves with drink, but not suicide. Now way!

What do you expect, half the government is telling the world we should not be there, the GI's hear this all the time. Going to war when they hear congressmen that say we should have never have gone there and we need to bring everyone home. Why do you think that most in the military hate the democrat party? I know, when I was in, I served under Jimmy Carter till reagon took over, the whole military felt better, and Jimmy was a VET! My daughter is in now and they feel the same way!

The military has always had a higher suicide rate than civilians...during peace time as well as times of war. It is related more to Dear John type situations than anything else. When the cat is away the mouse will play plus stress changes a persons personality and sometimes for the worse thus their spouses/girlfriends can't adjust to the changed personality and want a separation. The divorce rate is also higher for military personel during peace time as well as times of war. Really nothing new here.

Another point that many civilians are not aware of is the fact that there have been more military deaths in years of peacetime among active duty personel than have been lost per year in Iraq...due to multiple causes.

The national average in the US is 1 suicide every 16 minutes. If you think veterans are more susceptible because they're "damaged by war" you're fooling yourself.

Karma is catching up with those mother fuckers. They enjoyed killing innocent women and children for the fun of it and because they could get away with it, but karma knows no compromise. I'm really glad to see it's working!

I'm a member of a military message board where this has been an active subject for years. The numbers of suicide with the military is the same as anyone else in the US.

BTW, since my son was a veteran included in those 2005 stats in the first post, I really have done some investigating on this over the last 2+ years.

During peace time most militaries from other countries do not deploy at all and those that do...do not often deploy. Most other countries do not engage in combat at all...and those that do...do it on a small scale.

In example...during my 12 years in the military...during peace time I was deployed at least as much as I was at my home base. I engaged in four major operations...three of which were combat operations. I was married and divorced three times during those years. My philosophy was that when I am away and the wife plays...while I pay...she will not stay. It was I that divorced them.

I did not allow much to affect me...but I knew those that did...including some that committed suicide.

No it is not and historically it has not been the same. It has always been higher.

Sad is prob the understatement DF. Just wait till this lastest adventure is over and count the deaths of guys due to depleted uranium exposure - that is assessed to be over 10,000 from the Gulf War alone. Also ironic is 25% of the homeless - ie people on the streets or in shelters, comprise ex-military people.

Even more sad is the lack of interest (or denial) in counting victims outside the US, where there are obviously far more.

I don't think it's any secret that a significant amount of the population does not support the war in Iraq, so why would you expect those that represent the population in congress to not project those same sentiments?

Maybe it's those that continue to support the maintenance of a foreign occupation... an occupation with no end in sight that has been - from day one - based on lies, misdirection, and the marring of international relations that are actually saying "fuck the troops."

it's a shame so much partisanship exists in our government. George Washington equated the party system with that of despotism. No sense on blaming the harm done to our troops on the Democrats, imho - especially since you're identifying them as the ones with the platform ultimately resulting in removing them from harm's way.

Yesterday, on RDI, ther was a docu on the casualties of the US war in Iraq.... One interesting item was that the only people that really cared and showed up to funerals were Patriot Riders. To see those bikers escort a fallen soldiers to his last rest was pretty touching ... Those guys are for real , not the clowns in the WH and Pentagon ....
