GoDaddy Pulls Plug on Domain by MySpace Request

A popular computer security Web site was abruptly yanked offline this week by MySpace.com and GoDaddy, the world's largest domain name registrar, raising questions about free speech and Internet governance.

damn that sucks...

"Vaskovich said he spent "hours and hours" on the phone with GoDaddy on Wednesday before he finally got through to someone who was willing to listen"

Steve Awesome 01-25-2007 09:25 PM

Some site had a MySpace username and password list and they took it down until they removed the list. What if someone had your username and password list for all accounts on your site? Keep the site hosting the file up? Cancel all your accounts? What would Jesus do?

Trax 01-25-2007 09:25 PM

i keep telling it

Or spoke Russian.

Huggles 01-25-2007 09:31 PM

Godaddy sucks

VexXxed 01-25-2007 09:36 PM

52 seconds!?! Thats pretty fucking abrupt.

niche25 01-25-2007 09:37 PM

That stinks... I wonder if the definition of "freedom" will be changed in the dictionary to comply with all the bullshit going on these days.

I have yet to have any issues with GoDaddy and still have a positive opinion about them, but maybe I'll move a couple important domains to another registrar... lol.

If you're not doing anything illegal, you don't have anythign to worry about, Godaddy is great, I use them, and never have any problems, awesome tech support, get great deals on renews just by calling and asking. Most of the people on here who bitch about Godaddy, don't even have experience with them, they just heard they suck from someone else and say "Baaahhhhh" and then eat some grass.

DaddyHalbucks 01-25-2007 10:52 PM

GoDaddy is OK. I haven't had any major problems there, but they are kinda big and impersonal.

I always recommend Moniker.

:)

avalanche 01-25-2007 10:54 PM

We've got an account rep at GoDaddy that takes great care of us, but I have heard horror stories. Don't knw if any registrar is really safe from the BS....

SmokeyTheBear 01-25-2007 10:58 PM

hmm i found this interesting..

"Michael Froomkin, a law professor at the University of Miami who has written about domain name regulation, says this is the first time he's heard of a registrar abruptly taking a customer offline without a court order. "

didnt directnic recently do the same thing..

Webby 01-25-2007 11:03 PM

I wish damned domain registrars would concentrate on providing the service they are paid for and stop trying to have "opinions" on any subject.

The Sultan Of Smut 01-25-2007 11:29 PM

Companies will always bend to the will of an entity that has the ability to file a zillion claims against them and until someone fights the impossible battle in court this is the way it will stay.

Is there ANYTHING you don't spam or don't have a referral code for? Life must suck as a webmaster right? Why don't you find a job or something.

lol no offense but thats just flat wrong..

The whole thread is about godaddy doing something to someone who didnt do anything illegal..

Last time i checked legality ( or lack of ) is proven in a court of law.. Registrars always comply with the courts. godaddy bypassed the courts to become judge jury and executioner..

Would you like it if your domain was pulled because somone hacked your server and put something up ? without notifying you ? without consultation and no court order ? That would be a silly way to run a biz

davidd 01-25-2007 11:56 PM

Yeah, GoDaddy sucks.

They pulled one of my domains offline in the past. After fighting with them (1 week passed) they finally admitted "We made a mistake and we want to resolve this immediately. Unfortunately, in all cases such as these you need to pay a $50 admin fee to turn the domain back on.". They pulled my domain offline, I lost revenue on that domain for a week, and then they blackmailed me for $50 to turn the domain back on.

Do not be fooled by the cheap price. They suck!

No one hacked his server, he had a list of Myspace ID's and Passwords on his site. It was only down for seven fucking hours, give me a break, so to answer your question, Yes I would mind, but I would also understand and be fine with it.

Last time I checked a business is allowed to do what they feel is in their best interest in order to protect their business & reputation, ie "We reserve the right to refuse service".

EXACTLY this happened to me a week ago with Moniker.com

And they told me that if they receive another complaint they will take away my account and domains.

DarkJedi 01-26-2007 01:40 AM

P.S.

I didn't get a single email/notification about this. I found out because my friend ICQd me and said that my the site was down. Then I went to check my moniker.com account and it was disabled, I couldn't log in. I had to phone then and straighten everything out.

TexasDreams 01-26-2007 01:41 AM

for once, i agree with franck. delete your notepad full of ref urls and get to work, please.

Klen 01-26-2007 05:03 AM

The fact is no matter on which domain register you are if you have big illegal things anyone will suspend your domain without notice.

Pointless 01-26-2007 05:29 AM

i dont fucking trust any registrar as soon as the get pressure they fold.

Pointless 01-26-2007 05:30 AM

100% agreed, I keep telling it as well, the same goes for hosting. If you want to save money, don't do it on domains or hosting, both are essentials that keep you in business :2 cents:

Well I know that you moved them or are in the process of moving them right now.

KingK7 01-26-2007 05:47 AM

That is just fucking ridiculous

polish_aristocrat 01-26-2007 05:52 AM

Jedi, you should have started seperate drama about your experience

Z 01-26-2007 07:41 AM

GoDaddy sucks my hairy nuts.

Call Chris at Moniker and save yourself the headaches.

extreme 01-26-2007 07:53 AM

Amazing that there are people on this board who don't understand what an insane situation it is to have a domain registrar making this kind of decision.

Stay well clear of GoDaddy. A domain registrar should not care what's hosted on a domain, that's the hosters problem.
