GoDaddy Pulls Plug on Domain by MySpace Request

A popular computer security Web site was abruptly yanked offline this week by MySpace.com and GoDaddy, the world's largest domain name registrar, raising questions about free speech and Internet governance.

Some site had a MySpace username and password list and they took it down until they removed the list. What if someone had your username and password list for all accounts on your site? Keep the site hosting the file up? Cancel all your accounts? What would Jesus do?

That stinks... I wonder if the definition of "freedom" will be changed in the dictionary to comply with all the bullshit going on these days.

I have yet to have any issues with GoDaddy and still have a positive opinion about them, but maybe I'll move a couple important domains to another registrar... lol.

If you're not doing anything illegal, you don't have anythign to worry about, Godaddy is great, I use them, and never have any problems, awesome tech support, get great deals on renews just by calling and asking. Most of the people on here who bitch about Godaddy, don't even have experience with them, they just heard they suck from someone else and say "Baaahhhhh" and then eat some grass.

GoDaddy is OK. I haven't had any major problems there, but they are kinda big and impersonal.

I always recommend Moniker.

We've got an account rep at GoDaddy that takes great care of us, but I have heard horror stories. Don't knw if any registrar is really safe from the BS....

I wish damned domain registrars would concentrate on providing the service they are paid for and stop trying to have "opinions" on any subject.

Companies will always bend to the will of an entity that has the ability to file a zillion claims against them and until someone fights the impossible battle in court this is the way it will stay.

lol no offense but thats just flat wrong..

The whole thread is about godaddy doing something to someone who didnt do anything illegal..

Last time i checked legality ( or lack of ) is proven in a court of law.. Registrars always comply with the courts. godaddy bypassed the courts to become judge jury and executioner..

Would you like it if your domain was pulled because somone hacked your server and put something up ? without notifying you ? without consultation and no court order ? That would be a silly way to run a biz

Yeah, GoDaddy sucks.

They pulled one of my domains offline in the past. After fighting with them (1 week passed) they finally admitted "We made a mistake and we want to resolve this immediately. Unfortunately, in all cases such as these you need to pay a $50 admin fee to turn the domain back on.". They pulled my domain offline, I lost revenue on that domain for a week, and then they blackmailed me for $50 to turn the domain back on.

Do not be fooled by the cheap price. They suck!

No one hacked his server, he had a list of Myspace ID's and Passwords on his site. It was only down for seven fucking hours, give me a break, so to answer your question, Yes I would mind, but I would also understand and be fine with it.

Last time I checked a business is allowed to do what they feel is in their best interest in order to protect their business & reputation, ie "We reserve the right to refuse service".

Moniker.com shut down my domain without a second thought just because they recieved some email complaints. (my server got hacked, they uploaded some phishing pages and spammed the url)

I didn't get a single email/notification about this. I found out because my friend ICQd me and said that my the site was down. Then I went to check my moniker.com account and it was disabled, I couldn't log in. I had to phone then and straighten everything out.

100% agreed, I keep telling it as well, the same goes for hosting. If you want to save money, don't do it on domains or hosting, both are essentials that keep you in business

Amazing that there are people on this board who don't understand what an insane situation it is to have a domain registrar making this kind of decision.

Stay well clear of GoDaddy. A domain registrar should not care what's hosted on a domain, that's the hosters problem.

Whats the point? It's not like it's gonna change anything.

I'm just glad I still have my names.

All registrars are the same. They can pull the plug on you anytime they feel like it. Which I feel is bullshit. Hosting companies should deal with questionable content, not registrars.

But.. but but... but... godaddy has cool commercials, and Danica Patrick in the commercials...

I tried godaddy once. I put a domain on there and was working on it. Never submitted any sites with the domain or anything, and out of the blue they email me saying someone had complained I was spamming from the domain, and they'd pull the domain if I didnt stop, lmao. Retards. So I let them know that I'd never sent any emails from the domain and my server was secure and they should be able to see that, but based on their apparent inability to investigate ONE complaint I didnt feel they could serve my needs and I transfered the domain ASAP.

So evidently you can just fake an email header and complain about any domain on godaddy and they'll threaten the owner. blah.

I can honestly say that in all of my years with my main registrar, I have NEVER had any complaints from them. Not a single one.

On the one time I tried godaddy within a month I had them claim they had a complaint about my domain that was not even active beyond an index page, lol.
