14yr old kid sues myspace for $30m

"A 14-year old is suing myspace for $30 million claiming the site failed to protect her from a 19-year old she met through the site. The suit claims that MySpace doesn't verify a user's identity or age and doesn't do enough to protect users."

Credit cards can't be used as age verification? :Oh crap

Mr.Right - Banned For Life 06-20-2006 02:04 AM

now that was only a matter of time before that happens.

ffmihai 06-20-2006 02:04 AM

Nope, not since Visa launched it's visabucks campaign to teach kids about proper money, and credit management.

beemk 06-20-2006 02:08 AM

if she has someone she needs protection from she should go to the police, not myspace. her parents should be arrested for not watching her good enough.

:1orglaugh :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

if everyone knew about proper money management then the credit card companies would be out of business. anyone with half a clue doesnt pay 18.9% interest.

Cypherpunk 06-20-2006 02:10 AM

you meet a stranger off the internet and what do you expect? stupid bitch

So true... just don't tell all the kids spending all their visa bucks on that groovy new cd by Metallica. Wow Ma! look at all this money I have! I'm goin' dancin'! (in redneck voice)

AntiDrama 06-20-2006 02:15 AM

30M is a good chunk of change... pretty easy way to get it

Twisted Dave 06-20-2006 02:17 AM

That kid should lose ... MySpace shouldn't be hit for this ... fact is, the kid shouldn't have been fucking around talking to boys 5 years older than her ... She should have kept her MySpace friends to her real friends ... hell, I have one and I use it for that ... helps me keep up to date with what REAL friends are doing ... and bands etc that I like ... tours etc ...

XOS_Andrei_G 06-20-2006 02:30 AM

No offense, but it's the parent's and the child's fault. Morons really.

In the end, you decide to meet up with that complete stranger ALONE. You could always arrange a meeting with a friend or somebody to come along.

Don't blame somebody else for your ignorance -slash- stupidity. She got fucked 'cause she was slow-witted. She had AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLL the time to walk away from the whole deal. Meal? Movie? and he got to DRIVE her to the area in question.

Seriously now. Sounds like the making of a hillbilly scam.

beemk 06-20-2006 02:52 AM

"MySpace is more concerned about making money than protecting children online,"

of course they are, its a business. im sure its not that they dont care, but thats her parents job to make sure shes not talking to sexual predators online.

The Ghost 06-20-2006 03:03 AM

I think it should read a "14 yr old's PARENTS are sueing MySpace."

Once lawyers smell that more than a dollar is available, they'll come running. I'm just waiting for the day time commercials for attorneys that specialize in MySpace cases. :upsidedow

Lee 06-20-2006 03:50 AM

Persnally, I hope they get their asses beaten and have to sell their house to pay the bills. Fucking scam frivolous lawsuits are a fucking joke.

scottybuzz 06-20-2006 04:04 AM

hahaha i knew this was gonna be a good story just by reading the title of the thread, it was one of those things.

myspace shouldnt be fucked, plus if your 14 your account is set to private isnt it...

madawgz 06-20-2006 04:09 AM

ah thats bullshit, the myspace goons will take care of him...

notabook 06-20-2006 04:12 AM

Myspace will settle out of court with the kid for $26 dollars and a home pregnancy test so she can see if her little skank hoe ass is going to add to her white trash family.

BlackCrayon 06-20-2006 05:04 AM

pfft. im sure myspace covers their ass well with their TOS when you sign up.

wyldblyss 06-20-2006 05:21 AM

The 14 year old should sue her PARENTS for being dumb asses and not protecting her. WTF was she doing on the computer at 14 talking to strangers? What parent lets their 14 year old go out with some guy she met on myspace?

seeric 06-20-2006 06:31 AM

they'lll never see a cent. the media and publiclity will send myspace signups through the roof.

Lykos 06-20-2006 06:42 AM

they wont see a cent, common, this is too fucking stupid, lol

Rolo 06-20-2006 06:43 AM

I´m going to sue my city for all the criminals walking around on the sidewalks without me knowing who they are :helpme

SilentKnight 06-20-2006 07:38 AM

I blame a judicial system (lawyers and judges) that has created an environment where anyone can sue anyone for anything these days.

Tdog 06-20-2006 07:39 AM

Only in America !!!

Actually, it should be the social welfare to take the parent to court and take her guardianship away from the child. Yes, it's an extreme measure but it's certainly worth it to protect this 14 year old by providing her with a guardian that can actually 'guard' her.

I mean geez, I wouldn't be surprised if the mother set this whole thing up just so she can sue Myspace.

Fetish Gimp 06-20-2006 08:49 AM

Protect me from my own stupidity!

DutchTeenCash 06-20-2006 08:50 AM

unbelievable

And Im sure she'll get it or less but she will be compensated

More Booze 06-20-2006 08:52 AM

America...

chase 06-20-2006 08:59 AM

Absolutely Myspace should be sued. She should sue her parents, too, for not supervising her time online. Hell, she should sue her computer for not turning itself off to protect her. Why not sue herself for being a 14yo who wants to act, dress, and look older to attract attention from older guys, and then acting like a naive victim when she gets busted by her parents. /sarcasm

Seriously, you can block people on myspace, this isn't a matter of her being a victim-it's a matter of her acting like one so she isn't held responsible for the decisions she made in this situation. In light of that, I wouldn't be surprised if she lied about her age, and 19 isn't like a 29 year old, either. They're both teenagers for Christ's sake.

BobG 06-20-2006 09:00 AM

I met the CRAZIEST girl from myspace the other day. Super cute little 100lb blonde chick (24 years old). The only problem was that fuck.... she was literally out of her gord. Yipes. I'll never do that again.

tony286 06-20-2006 09:03 AM

it was only a matter of time before the lawyers got involved, I highly doubt suing was her idea. It was the lawyers idea and she was the pawn.

pornguy 06-20-2006 09:04 AM

After the internet in the US is destroyed by the government, censored etc, then only years too late, they will realize that the parents should be watching thier children.

Miss Lissa 06-20-2006 09:05 AM

You don't need a credit card to sign up for myspace, just an email address.

I doubt it unless MySpace's attorneys are amateurs which I believe they are not. No one forced the kid to do anything. The guy got arrested, that is all that needs to happen. A MySpace representative was not there afterschool and forced her into the guy's car. Getting into his car was a choice SHE made and this choice ultimately reflects back on bad parenting and/or a psychological problem.

Think about it. Let's say some guy goes through and searches for blogs of young girls and finds their AIM screen name. The guy contacts her via AIM and tells her to come out to blah blah street at blah PM. She comes out, gets into his car. The guy rapes her. Should AOL cough up 30mil? AIM doesn't require a strict age verification either.

I'm a sig whore 06-20-2006 09:12 AM

this is what i say in every thread that mettions myspace.

vanillaice 06-20-2006 09:27 AM

This is ridiculous, but what if the girl wins? Will that open the door to tons of stupid lawsuits against not only myspace, but all the dating sites and various community sites out there?

G-Rotica 06-20-2006 09:30 AM

ugh...just ugh

OzMan 06-20-2006 09:34 AM

What fucked up logic. They might as well go after the guy who invented the asphalt that the construction company used to build the parking lot where the assault took place. :error
