Here's a good one for you ..

In Vancouver they have very strong "no smoking" laws, but they also have bars where it is "legal" to smoke pot.

Just don't try smoking cigarettes in there!

A tourist couple was sitting in a pot bar and they lit up. The waitress came over and said, "You can't smoke in here, it's against the law!"

The couple pointed to people in the bar smoking joints and said, "But what about them?"

"They're smoking pot," the waitress said. "That's OK."

Smokers --- spend even one year working in a hospital (I did 15) and you would likely change your tune about how cool it is to smoke. People with burnt-out lungs laying in misery sucking oxygen from a tank and feeling shitty all day every day while they suffer through their last days, all because of their years of what?.... that's right-- their years of sucking air through a stupid little paper tube filled with poison. And how many people will you take with you via your second-hand smoke?

See you on the oncology ward.

Dying's not the bad part. Suffering is the worst. And what it does to your family is terrible.

My ex's father died of lung cancer writhing in pain with every breath. He practically PRAYED for death.

My grandmother's co-worker got throat cancer and his wife woke up one morning to see his neck swelled up to the size of a watermelon because the cancer had come back and it burst the artery in his neck. He was dead there in bed with her.

And I'll never hear my father sing to me again because he got throat cancer and they had to remove his larynx. He has to breathe through a hole in his neck now and when he goes out he has to keep it covered in gauze.

Heartbreaking :(

Tell him to expect week 3 to be the toughest. Most smokers I know have said they could go 2 weeks pretty easily, but in that 3rd week it really hits hard.

bingo... my grandfather died in 2001 from throat cancer brought on from years of smoking. He was in termendous pain and his entire family had to give up their lives for the last year and help him. My mother and her brother were holding him when he died...I knew him well enough to know that he must have been thinking he wished he hadn't smoked when he saw his oldest and youngest (of four) kids going through that emotional pain. Not to mention what it did to my grandmother.

Yet, my father and my husband still smoke and won't give up. I love them both but it pisses me off that despite seeing the hell it put the family through they won't try. People go on and on about personal freedom..and we will leave second hand smoke alone .. it does not just effect you. It is saying 'I don't care how much this hurts you' to the loved ones that are going to be there to nurse you through death.

princess 10-28-2003 05:17 AM

Easy to say it, harder to do it. I am 36.5 years old and I have been smoking since I was 11 (25.5 years).

I have tried quiting cold turkey but stress causes you to smoke after 3-4 days.

I have tried gums, patches, inhalers, nothing works. I asked my doctor about Zyban and basically Zyban is just more or less a head pill, meanign that you gotta still have the desire and strenght to quit or Zyban won't work either.

You find a solid solution to quit smoking and I would gladly quit in a heartbeat.

Smokeaway is ajoke too by the way:(

I spent 5 years working in nursing homes and home health care as a CNA and I worked with people that was on oxygen and turning blue from coughing and still was there at the table for smoke time, these are dedicated smokers who could care less if they die or not. Myself I would be happy to quit (read post above this one).

After all the stuff that has come out about the dangers of poisoning your body with the carcinogens in cigs, I'm dumbfounded that anyone in their right mind continues to smoke.

Its sad that our government even lets the crap still be manufactured when they know full on how destructive smoking is to our society. But as usual money rules and they don't want to financially hurt the tobacco growers, cigarette sellers, advertising recipients of tobacco ads, etc.

To each his own, just know you are destroying your ability to breathe one day.

Absolutely. When the smoke clears and you look at the side-effects such as second-hand smoke, this whole habit becomes very selfish and destructive. I have certain relatives that choose to live at the near-poverty level, yet they smoke like chimneys all of them.... paying like $7-$8 per pack, yet they can't afford enough groceries to feed their kids. Their fucking smokes are the LAST thing to go in the budget..... amazing. Utterly selfish, completely clueless. And the kids will likely smoke when they grow up as well.

And don't get me started on women who smoke (or drink for that matter) while pregnant, or idiot fathers-to-be who smoke around their pregnant women. Once the baby is born these people should be shot, the kid adopted and raised by people who care enough to NOT smoke around them.

Furious_Male 10-28-2003 07:48 AM

Hell I can respect anyones right to smoke. I am not one to bitch at anyone and I think some (not all) of these new smoking laws are bullshit. BUT. Since this thread is here.

All you guys that think your bad ass and say bring on the lung spots.. or I can deal with the cancer later I want to live now will be regretting that if you actualy do have problems.

My father was a bad ass. Said the same things. Totally blue collar to the core. Strong as hell... never seen him cry, works in a stone quarry 16 hours a day, drinks beer like a fish etc. etc. You know the type.

2 years ago he started complaining about it being hard to breathe. Of course we urged him to stop smoking. He slowly backed off but wouldnt go to the docs right away. Untill the day he couldnt breath at all. After being rushed in to the hospital they discovered a bronchial disease (I dont know the name) caused by smoking. This tough guy was reduced to near nothing. Each breath he tried to take was work. He said it was like trying to breath hot air through a straw. He quit smoking then (obviously) and his entire tune changed.

Just this past February he was diagnosed with stage 3 NSC Lung cancer. He has been undergoing chemo and a barrage of other drugs to fight it. Right now things look good. He has no hair but the tumors (there are 2) are slowly shrinking. Things can go bad fast so we are just hoping for the best. He still works at the stone quarry full time and is still his usual self but he is extremely humbled. Not being able to breath and facing death each day has shown him that he wasnt as tough as he thought. He tells me if he had to do it again he would NOT smoke.

You may feel invincible now but when each breath is a chore you will realize you are wrong. Try to think ahead. Not only will you suffer but who will you leave behind.

/rant :) Take what you want for my post.

I agree about the warning part, there isn't anyone that lights up thinking they are full of vitamins and good stuff....

reynold 10-28-2003 09:13 AM

Smokers who know it's bad for them and don't take action are either VERY WEAK (no it's not that hard) or unnatural (in some way it is very sick to poison your own body)

true. And in addition, in countries like the Netherlands or canade, you charge society for your self-caused disease.

I even think people aren't fully aware of the bad effects smoking has. It's not just lung cancer and atherosclerosis. There's a huge scala of unpretty diseases directly or indirectly caused by smoking.
