1989 Video from AT&T Labs "Pandora" project defeats Acacia patent claims!

I have found footage today from a 1989 AT&T Labs project ( in existence since 1986 ) that describes, and shows, how people can communicate through a network AND save video for later playback over a network. Thank you AT&T labs for documenting on video, in 1989, how this system works and demonstrating the usage of video over a network and live video conferencing. The video is typical 80's style and is 18megs. The file is located HERE

Detailed accounts from AT&T technicians regarding the development of the Pandora system is located HERE

After watching the video ... what is your input everyone??

Read the documentation on the archives I've linked to and you wouldn't make that statement.

Cool huh? :D

And documentation in the Archives I linked to date back to the beginning of their research and development as being 1986 !

I've been working my ass off to find prior art and help the Acacia fight. Since it's something that could affect us all in the future I thought it was important.

After sifting for hours through different FTP archives online I did a search today under the term "download video 1989" on yahoo. A ton of links came up.. one of which was the Pandora project.

Yeah even though it covers real-time video and not video that is stored and viewed later it still shows all the research they were doing regarding this. Good work!

I was thinking the same thing while watching the video. Everything was mostly discussing live video and not digitally stored media that could be transferred at a later time but towards the end they touched base on that idea but I don't think they demonstrated it in the video. Let's see what the lawyers say about that since I believe the patent does not cover live transmissions, rather only stored media.

YES they demonstrated it in the video!

Didn't you watch the video? The guy was sent a video file over the network and clicked a file ( dated 1989 ) and watches a video with sound giving him directions!!

Yes, I did. That's why I said towards the end they touched on it. I typed my original message while watching the video so I didn't wait until the end

Anyone remember any of the publications that reported on Acacia?

I think a press release is in order

probably, but even if they did at least the acacia leeches are squashed. AT&T would then have to decide whether to follow the same dubious path, and given their business isn't 100% solely based on patent revenue thats a fairly long bow to draw.. and even if it was it would take ages for the process to be initiated and get to the stage it's at at the moment so at the very least it would buy another year. Anyways.. it's all early days we don't know how this prior art will actually play out.

Someone should track down the author of these research papers and get their input on ACACIA's Claims.

Author:
Andy Hopper
Title:
Pandora - An Experimental System for Multimedia Applications

I wonder what Andy Hopper thinks about ACACIA's ridiculous claims!!

here's some more stuff that looks rather interesting... straight outta the IEEE Journal on selected areas in communications, specifically, Volume: 7, Issue: 5, Year: Jun 1989

gotta be a member to access the full journals, but you can see by the two pages of very descriptive titles that Acacia did NOT invent this shit.

they keep on saying that they've got many patents covering the different parts of the process and each bit of prior art has to be found to defeat the threat.. but I mean, who gives a damn about their crappy system and the way it works as long as the bit thats pertinent to us - downloaded video - is invalidated they can keep the rest and dance a merry jig

Okie dokie I will continue to install my old zipdrive ...
Hopefully - I don't have to install that old "DOS" that was also picture driven and which MS "drove over" ...

I'm pretty sure it was called "Gem" and I watched video play on it ... then it was an IBM based "icon type" system that mimicked the Amiga system ...but for PC's ..
