Question for GFY: Who would use a dating/webcam api...

Simple question...

Who would use a dating or webcam api...

but may not possess the programming know-how to set one up or integrate it into an existing form?

How many people fully understand what an API is capable of?

Looking for some honest responses.

I know multiple affiliates who want to use an API and are actively looking for someone to integrate them. Are you guys going to be offering a service?

How about a service that would help manage via a web interface?

Hey Sharky,

That's been my hunch all along...

I tell plenty of people they should set up an API on their tube join form or in a number of other places and usually they'll respond with "thanks, great idea!" and I send them the API and nothing ever comes of it.

This leads me to believing any of the following...

1) They're lazy and/or really don't care to monetize their traffic to begin with...
2) They may be too embarrassed (lack of a better word?) to admit they don't know how to install it themselves.
3) They have no idea what an API is in the first place.

If it's #2 or #3 we could offer them assistance in setting one up but that could turn into a huge allocation of time problem...

In other words, how many times are we going to gladly help out an affiliate and see a zero return on traffic? Or is that a risk as a company we have to be willing to take?

I guess it's like a sponsor giving out FHG's. That part is great... but should they also go out and make specific sized thumbs for affiliates that request 83x102 and another that needs 1000's thumbs all 66x133 thumbs as well?

Where do you draw the line? I could see both sides of the argument...

I have no fucking clue how to setup an API...

Can't say I've put much effort into figuring it out though.

Are you talking about a free service or a tool where affiliates can use the system (for a subscription)

I know a company who does this for a fee, and if there's an affiliate who wants to get this set up with us, we can negotiate a deal where that company can charge less if its coming from us.

if i had the time, I would have something setup.

its a great idea that some companies allow the use of API's and I think this is the future for most affiliates that earn their income through sign-ups.

However, most people have no clue and likewise, some programs don't either Why spend all the time and effort to only allow someone to post through your system? Why not create that in XML instead? If you have an API, or anyone for that matter, then as a user I expect to have a lot of features available to me

I know a few people that would love to use one but they do not have not the slightest clue how to set it up.

I would say there are a lot of people out there who don't have the technical expertise or a tech on staff who would be able to set it up right, but they would if they could.

You're an experienced guy too going back to the old CJ days...

Thanks for the honest answer, I figure most are like this (I know I would be too had I not been so involved with the APIs here )

Hey Jayvis,

Without giving away your secrets... I don't webmasters have seen an API in action before.. to know how it works....

We all have read the Wiki page

An application programming interface (API) is an interface implemented by a software program that enables it to interact with other software. It facilitates interaction between different software programs similar to the way the user interface facilitates interaction between humans and computers.

An API is implemented by applications, libraries, and operating systems to determine their vocabularies and calling conventions, and is used to access their services. It may include specifications for routines, data structures, object classes, and protocols used to communicate between the consumer and the implementer of the API.

Can you show us a real example? Or explain to people how it works and benefits them. If you make the process this easy... whats the hold up?

Good idea Dwreck, I have the documentation up here but maybe I should include some additional info as you mentioned: http://jayvis.com/amateur-match-dating-api/

It's all about the interface and if it's modular. People like EASY point, click, and drag interfaces. Why shouldn't this be any different? Or make widget ready drop and click modules and rise above the competition

API is great, because it provides you with full functionality including your own billing. Basically members will get the cams in your members area as a reward.

We are looking forward to build a solid and secure solution that will be customizable and ready for any members area or a tube site.
