I Think The election Results Prove That America Has Moved Farther To The Left
As bad as the economy is there is no way the Senate should have held for Dems.
As soon as the Republican party shakes off religious influence they can move forward. |

Several months ago I read a pretty big article (can't find the link right now) about how there is a theory that the republicans, if they don't change their ways, are a dying breed.
The idea is this: Over the next 12-15 years the size of the black and latino populations in this country will increase by 400% while the number of white people will stay about the same. Black people are almost always democrats and most latinos are as well. Add into that mix that the current up coming generation, that being the 10-20 year olds, is the largest generation that this country has seen since the baby boomers. And they are a pretty liberal group. For the most part they don't have the hangups about race and sexuality that many do (obviously this is just bulk profiling, but the piece was speaking as a whole) and they are more liberal than their parents. A large number of them identify themselves as democrats or left leaning independents. Obviously some of them will change as they get older, but for many of them that change won't happen until their 30's or 40's . They are also not nearly as religious as their parents so they will not be as easily influenced by the church. When you add it all together is spells trouble for the republicans. The republicans are still the party of the wealthy old white guy and they are a dying breed. While it may not stay that way forever when this generation comes of age and you match it with the shifting ethnic demographic that is coming onto this country you get what could be long term success for the democrats. You see it now as the republicans are scrambling to not rely on the religious right as much and are trying to adopt the tea party as their new base. They are also desperately trying to get anyone of color into the party to show diversity. They will be fine for the next few election cycles, but without a change to their party trouble could be on the horizon for them. |

I don't know, Mike.
I think it might be more accurate to say that the Republican party has allowed itself to become enmeshed with fundamentalist fanatics who are off putting to many. My family were staunch Republicans (I say were because my grandparents have passed), and their families before them. I voted Republican for many years. With what I see out of today's Republican party, there is no way I will vote for them, not even on the state level. I don't think that's because I've moved to the left. I think it's because the Republican party has lost it's collective mind.

I did not even have to vote yesterday.
I live in Maryland, which is a blue state. It has mostly always been a blue state, minus a few Republican governors who knew they still had to cater to the left if they want more than one term. Maryland is almost as blue as blue can be and we hardly ever run into problems. It is a great state. I think we lost one house seat to a Republican but that is because the Democrat incumbent, who was a freshman, had no chance to begin with. Everybody knew that was happening from the polling and nothing was going to stop it. All other incumbents, including the Democrat governor, were retained. The Governor isn't even that popular, but the guy running against him is the Republican Governor that lost his second term to him last time around. That Republican deregulated our gas and electric, leading to a 72% hike and did other things that voters have not forgotten. |

That's because, only 37 seats out of 100 were in play, the US Senate is "recycled" every 2 years, US Senators are elected for 6 years. In the House, the whole House had to be "recycled". That's the reason why the changes in the Senate were not as spectacular...

Still, you have to go back to the civil war to find a time when the house went over to one party during a presidents midterm without also taking the senate.

This is why they didn't take the senate. A 6 seat gain is pretty respectable

Agreed. I wonder how braindead one must be to come to that conclusion after yesterday's ass kicking.

you would be the expert on brain dead. Perhaps you think blacks and hispanics are suddenly going to embrace the GOP. You do realize that the population growth of blacks and hispanics FAR outpaces whites.

I can't answer for the future, it hasn't happened yet, but if you learn from the past, the government works better with a balance. Only 37 seats were up for election and the GOP got may of them. I'm glad the commercials are over and the crap in the mail. According to many polls, more people are calling themselves conservative than liberal by a wide margin.
http://www.gallup.com/poll/120857/co...cal-group.aspx is a good article on it

You mean back when democrats were buying, selling, trading, raping, beating and killing slaves and fighting to the death to keep them?

How many of them had been republican? That's a major factor too. Bearing in mind that senate is 6 years, these would be senators elected in 2004 which is before balance of power in congress was moving towards Democrat, plus taking into account ones that have been elected multiple times, usually trying to beat those senators is a lot cause (Barbara Boxer for instance who won a 4th term).

it definitely proves that smart people don't vote and are happy to let the dumb ones decide which pack of criminals will feed off the nations teet for another term. probably because they're smart and can survive in any environment regardless of partisan control over a state or country.

How about a common fucking sense party? That's one I can get behind.
Both parties are fucked up in their extremities to the left or right. I wish most people could think about actual issues, rather than vote along party lines like a programmed automaton. While I hate both sides, I'd say flaming liberals get under my skin more than anything. There's always a sanctimonious tone with them in every argument that makes me want to strangle a motherfucker.
