If you have a few days of downtime...

will good penalize your rankings?

if so, how far will they drop?

and how long will it take to regain your previous positions?

Sometimes short downtimes actually can cause a boost in se traffic, not sure about longer downtime over a day or two though.

Yes, it can.

If you decide to move and change IP and nameservers, that can also affect your ranking.

there's already a million ex-gf sites, you dropped the ball on starting yet another stolen ex-gf content site, who does that, you seriously couldn't even get one of these sites off the ground in time when the content is available everywhere?

It depends on different factors including how often and when they happen to spider your site but generally a day of downtime didn't affect my rankings much. I'm not sure about more than that.

Agreed ... I just migrated about 60 client's accounts from one server to another ( more powerfull ) retaining the name server as is , and in fact a few main stream site got a boost in ranking ..

I just had a mainstream site go offline that is number 1 for a lot of 1 word keywords in a particular niche (edit: should mention these are 1,000,000+ per month phrases). I didn't realize it was down. It was down for several days before I noticed. I quickly checked the SERPS for all the big phrases and it was no where to be found. Once I got it back up, it went right back to where it was for all phrases in a matter of hours.

I wouldn't worry about it.

increase googlebot crawl rate in webmaster tools while your site is down just in case.

No, I do not own my own building ... like ALL other hosts...

On the other hand, I do not cater anymore to the adult community ....

As for the ranks comment, if you enter in google :

avocat condo montreal ( which means : lawyer condo montreal ),

he now has # 3 , 4, 5 positions ( position 1 is sponsored, 2 not sure ... )

But anyway, who cares ... did not apply for the bro membership card

Note : that is his business, so that traffic is gold ... though he does not have as much as " god " ... lol

Notice I said can, not will. ;)

But for the most part a change of host is ok. The downtime is far more destructive for your rankings, and this RCN downtime has been going on for too long.

That is complete bullshit and you have nothing to back that up. You were trying to sound like you knew what you were talking about and you don't. next... newbie board is >>>>>way

I recently moved IP's on a site and did see an increase. BUT there was a logical reason for it. There was an old domain redirected to the IP of the one I had been moved to, about 2 weeks later all links to that old domain showed up as backlinks to the domain I had just moved.

Usually this would rock and be ok by me, but there was a 'disney' related site that was giving the most juice to that old domain. I emailed them and had them take the links down, but quickly got worried about that 'ip' and moved the site away.

It doesn't really relate to this scenario but I screwed up my SE traffic for a good 2-3 weeks on one site by removing a lot of keyword text. Google stopped sending about 80% of what it used to. Once I finally figured out what happened and I put the text back and Google updated their cache of my site, my rankings immediately reappeared and I even got a 10-20% boost in SE traffic for a day or so.

I would imagine your rankings would not worsen whatsoever due to downtime, unless it was for months or years. As long as the content of your site is consistent with what it was they will still list your site where it was.

Actually I moved 3 domains to a new ip and nameserver with 0 downtime and 2 day's later the good serps I had were gone, still haven't picked up now after 1 month. Not saying that this happens a lot but It do seem to happen.

I've had this happening to me quite a few times over the years and it never made a difference as far as SE traffic goes .... BTW the last time was indeed with dreamhost - they suspended my account and took more than 100 sites off - it took me something like 4-5 days to move them and once they were back on, the traffic was the same as before.

If I have to be fair though it was totally my fault as I uploaded seriously nested directories to one of my sites (didn't do it on purpose of course, I just uploaded them the way they were saved on my HD) and that probably super-loaded the server and I got kicked out.

yeah, this happens all the time when you try to host your sites on a Pentium I at home and on top of that you forget to connect it to the Interwebs ;)

If I have to be serious though, pure coincidence would be my guess - please remember that two events might follow each other, but that doesn?t necessarily mean that there is a connection between them.

I'll have to talk to Phat about my dedicated Pentium I's, I was dead sure they were newer P2's with atleast 32mb ram! :P

Yea might not be why they got dropped but they have been pretty steady for 4+ years.

i had something happen similar.. my hardlink trades script that manages all links on all my sites didnt work anymore after a php upgrade. Noticed it after 3-4 days. Fixed it, but because the hard links were gone for 3-4 days many sites removed my link too. Downtime for 3-4 days would have the same effect: Sites with for example linkex will remove your link when their link is gone for such a period of time.
Didnt have alot of effect on the SERPS of the majority of my sites, but one site with alot of backlinks dropped to nowhere in google for EXACTLY a month - after the month it returned instantly to the original position like nothing had happened.

You mean decrease the rate. Increasing would only make the pages drop out of the index faster.
