I got arrested for speeding once.
I was 18 had a 80 camero with a rebuilt 427, 6"highrise, dual holley 750's and a NOS system on it.
I made it from 20 minutes north of Boston to 30 minutes south of Portland Maine in 20 minutes......

I saw the cop and slammed on the brakes,, He still clocked me at 120....
Spent the night in jail, My friend who was timing me had to drive back to MA and get bail money.....

Can't you avoid jail entirely if you pay the fine immediately? 3 days in jail for speeding? Is it because you couldn't come up with the cash right away?

Up here you just get a ticket, or if it is really excessive then you have to go to court. No jail.

I've never heard of anyone getting jail time in Canada for speeding. In fact I've been busted doing 205 KM/H in an 80 zone and I just got a huge ticket, my 3 day old car towed, a one month suspension.

You got lucky Rich. In Canada, anything 50+ km/h over the speed limit can be considered "dangerous driving", which is a Criminal Code offense, and carries federal jail time. However, it *is* up to the discretion of the officer as to what charge he lays.

There is a totally different attitude in the US with police - they are there for the sole purpose of busting ya. (Although ya can't blame em for cooling you down at 120mph *g*)...

I live where "repressive" enforcement is illegal and the attitude of cops is totally different. Example, if you are up shit creek and have a breakdown - wave a cop and he will get his shirt sleeves rolled up and try to be a temporary mechanic. If he can't fix the car - he calls a vehicle to haul the car home and a police car to drive the passengers back home. The cost? Nuthing! And the height of courtesy from all these guys. Hell.. they end up friends!

Another odd fact is... the cops cannot "raid" your home/office between 12pm and 6 am - it is "unconstitutional" *s*. Hell they can't even pull a dealer outta bed at 5am! :-) Wierd shit!

I have never found any country yet who had such helpful cops - their "aim" ain't to write tickets and arrest - tis to "manage" a situation and help where possible and they are repected for this.

Three days in jail? Na.. a few jokes and a promise to behave in future and you are on your way again :-)

as far as i know there are only 2 reasons they can arrest you for speeding

1) you appear under the influence of something

2) you were going double the speed limit or faster.
the later is considered "reckless endangerment" and bumps the mistermener of speeding up to a low level felony, thus your ass will be in the back of a police car shortly.
