1 IP for all domains?

A host told me they can only give me 1 IP for all domains I am hosting with them. I won't say the name, but it's a well respected host by people on this board.

Anyway I was told from the begining of my cyber venture that each domain must have its own IP to protect the other domains from being blacklisted as well on search engines in case 1 domain gets blacklisted. The host told me that having only 1 IP shouldn't be a problem in SE blacklisting case.

Hosts I've been at so far all gave me unique IPs for each domain so I wasn't thinking about this at all. Now this host has better prices and some big fishes are hosting at it, but it only offers 1 IP for all domains. I don't know how to decide.

What do you think? Is having unique IP for each domain really so important or not?

I beleive also that one IP for all domains also hurts SE rating..
not sure why .. cant remember actually but I think you are better of on seperate IPs for each domain

I have acheieved a #9 rating on google with domains on the same IP ..
but rank really seemed to bounce up and down.

Check out this article ... I think its outdated.. but I got #9 google after reading it a few times and tweaking some pages.

In my experience, you don't really need a lot of IP #'s to be ranked well for lots of domain names. If your host won't give you what you are willing to pay for though, you should probably get another host anyway.

i read an article that had quotes from some guy from google that said as long as the domains were set up correctly, sites sharing 1 ip wouldn't be penalised.

although i could see problems regarding blacklisting.

Besides SE blacklisting, if you share an IP address and get spam complaints your email gateway blacklisting will also be shared.

Because of the rules governing IP assignments, just having multiple domains no longer gets you multiple numbers.

2 ways around it - are to say you need extra numbers for either a secure certificate or anonymous ftp, both of which should get you a unique number.
