Well fuck me, adultfriendfinder.co sold for $5,600 USD

Too rich for my blood.

I thought I had that domain after registering it as soon as .co registrations were announced, and being told by godaddy it was available.

I find it:

a) fucked up that godaddy can get away with telling you it's available prior to taking your $250 or whatever it was, and once **cough** "registering" it, being told it's going to auction.

b) that adultfriendfinder didn't pre-register the domain themselves seeing they obviously have copyright ownership. maybe just an oversight or they felt .co's are worthless.

c) a bit of a gamble seeing i) no-one knows how that tld will rank ii) there surely can't be that many people mis-typing the full URL in without the "m", and anyway, many of those will already be members trying to get to the home page.

Mind you, it could go well. I have a few of their foreign TLD's and have been pushing them for years.

Good luck to the .co winners!

you were done a favor. its a trademark and you would be basically squatting on it. the .co registry are even sending out emails warning cybersquatters to 'stay away' from squatting on .co domains.

True.

Godaddy must make a packet off all these new TLD's, they take a non-refundable fee of $20 or something like that when domains go to auction.

There were 10 bidders I think for that auction, which means they made 10 x $20 = $200 from that domain alone.

452,749 .co domains have been registered so far, that's a shitload of money these registrars have made from doing next to nothing.

Agreed.

Im surprised you would go for such a domain with so much possible litigation that could be attached to it later and a very good chance of you losing it ?

Yes.....

Fact is that you have to know or at least research what a companies policies are regarding domains that are simlar or in possible conflict with thier trademarks/name , some companies dont care...some set rules on use and some will just sue your ass !!!!

I looked this up years ago, their policy hasn't changed. As long as you ONLY promote adult friend finder on the domain, you can keep it. I don't see how the .co authority can force you to give it up if the copyright owner gives you the ok.

@ area51
I dont think the .co authority would force you to give up or even bother with any domain held unless a complaint from a trademark holder was received.

Type .com 100 times yourself and see. Every time I did that exercise, ocm was by far the biggest error, I had 0 .co's and 0 .cm's.

They probably think that Bing's favouritism for exact match domain name (minus TLD) will work to their advantage in the serps.

Truth in these posts. There are a sliver of names that are not com/net/org or prominent ccTLD that are worth anything, and the average person registering anything in those extensions is getting a shitty domain.

But yea, AFF has registered trademark and could get that name for cheap, and if they so felt could sue the owner for at least their legal fees. At best, the owner could get C&D'd and simply give up the domain for free and lose the money their paid for it.

They would have grabbed the .co if they wanted it. Same with the TLD's I own (one of which is obscure and yes, it ranks).

Just because they didn't doesn't mean they can't take it from whoever does. The moment dating ads or a similar site to AFF pops up on that domain, they're at risk of losing the domain.

That's obvious from what I've already said about their affiliate terms and conditions.

I wonder how it will go for them. I wouldn't get into trademarked domains myself. There are so many other easier ways of making money

You are a cybersquatter who got lucky and conned some other poor sucker into buying your legal troubles for you. Now you come to brag about it in public?

This industry isn't really that big. I think people are going to remember this story years down the line when you are trying to do some big deal. This deal speaks loudly for the kind of person you really are.

So based on your knowledge or research on Apple's policies on trademark enforcement, do you view them as being a company that (1) doesn't care, (2) sets some rules on use or (3) will sue your ass?

Are you seriously this thick and naive?

I try and be polite and reasonable in forums everywhere I go, and I meet people like you who have no fucking clue, then I can't contain my gut response.

Are you in business or just a forum polyp? Great domain btw, real memorablexxx.
