i haven't had a land line in, well, ever (since i started living on my own around 18 years ago). i dropped rogers (the Canadian att arm) about two years ago, the prices were retarded, especially when traveling. so i threw away my blackberry, told them to go fuck themselves, got a pre-paid virgin mobile phone for 20 bucks a month, and an ipod touch for wifi, as you can pretty much find free or unsecured wifi anywhere now. i hate talking on the phone too, obviously, and really hate rogers/att.

in my opinion that's just plain stupid to do in your position, based on your posts you made alot of millions of dollars and you got 20$ pre paid phone? I know less expenses is a good thing but common, 20$ prepaid phone being multi millionaire ? are you serious?

You suggest he purchase something that he fully admits he doesn't need just because he is a millionaire?

I think it would be a pain to carry around a phone and a iTouch, which would make me combine them if I wanted both, but if you don't use a phone... why pay $80 a month?

This!

This is why I'm doing this. To crack the backwards mentality people have adopted that says, if you have money you must piss it away. Those days died in 2005. Adapt or die.

It's a phone...Not a pacemaker! A phone with constant web connection, etc. is not a necessity.

I just read this and realized, I probably don't need my smart phone either. It seems I use it more for texting and web browsing than I do for talking. Not once have I gone over 200 minutes in a 1 month period.

The wealthy don't stay wealthy by spending money that isn't necessary. Going off the grid is not a bad idea at all.

I've mentioned this before, but I only used just over 30 minutes on my plan last month. I HATE talking on the phone...but I love being able to email, text, and IM...so it does have it's purpose.

Haven't had a landline in 10 years.

My first clue it was time to do this was my consistent low minute usage every month.
My second clue was having nearly 4000 rollover minutes with hundreds of them dropping off each month, while even more hundreds got added, increasing the amount every month, forever. Never tapped a single rollover minute in my life. I could have called Kim Jong Il and talked for a month for free.

Which led me to the inevitable conclusion: I don't need a regular phone or plan. Ever.

Jesus christ phones are chap in the US.

I just resigned 5 business lines (3 iphone 3gs and 2 additional normal phones that we will only use for emergency) and it will rank up about 700 $ a month tx incl.

I experienced that at Las Vegas InterNext in '03. I was mocked for having a lesser phone than the big-ballin' pimps that were doing the mocking. Coincidentally, I also decided I don't need to waste money going to InterNext.

One interesting note about that: The big ballin' pimps that mocked me at '03 InterNext.... are all gone from the biz.

And Amp remains.

where did he state he doesn't need it? if he said he only uses 10 minutes a month to talk then ok, he just said he had to switch to prepaid phone for $20, my plan right now is $35 with 250min, unlimited text, free after 6 etc, so if he does use his phone often (he didn't state how often he uses it) overall it might not be smart saving $10-15 a month and always watching how much you use it

We have a cheap (special) Sprint family plan with three lines that costs $69 plus taxes each month. That's the ONLY reason I can justify keeping it. If I was paying $120 a month for 1 iPhone line, things would be different for sure.

Keep in mind too AMP, that that $50 worth of Prepaid minutes have an expiration date on them. You can't keep them stored and use them forever.

Ooma.com

Pay $200 once at Best Buy. Then free service forever (well until they go out of business) save for about $15 a year for taxes. That's even cheaper although you won't be mobile. Or go with some other VoIP providers and get it for less than $5 a month after buying the equipment.

Nice to see someone ditching the consumer "gotta have it all" culture though.

About the cell plans most expire the minutes after a couple months. Watch that. You might want to go with something like T-mobile's 1000 minutes for $100 with a 1 year expiration period.

I heard Sprint is up to something with the family plans. Something about taking those discounts away in some cases. Check this out if you already haven't:

Why not just flush $15 down the toilet each month? It's the same thing.

how is it same thing, he can come out ahead if he uses his phone often, those prepaid minutes expire and you always have to watch them, what if you receive few emergency calls or something

Mine isn't really a discount. We were old SERO customers and in a bid to move people from those accounts they've put us on a new plan and we're basically grandfathered in.

My old plan was $23 a month for 500 minutes and unlimited everything else. It's obvious why they would want people off such a cheap plan.

What you posted is just them dumping an employee discounts (lots of companies offer discounts) on any plans or add-ons under $29 a month. This wouldn't effect me, even if my plan wasn't a grandfathered plan.

Basically you're saying pay $10-$15 more a month for a service he may never use? That's flushing money down the toilet.

If you need more minutes, you buy a slightly bigger package or you use the phone less. It really wasn't long ago when the majority of people didn't have a cell phone and they got along perfectly fine, without them - emergencies and all.

yes, i'm serious. the phone was more than 20 bucks (a couple of hundred), but it's 20 bucks a month pre-paid each month, includes unlimited texting to anywhere in north america, 10 cents a min voice, (which i rarely use), all the call waiting/voicemail/bs, etc. and fuck rogers/att, never again.

if you use the service enough to justify the cost, cool beans. i don't.

Your remaining minutes as well as length of service time left are both displayed right on the main screen at all times. Only an idiot could fuck that up.

Sure you can. But I didn't say I used a debit card to buy the phone. I used cash. Someone asked how I pay for plane tickets.... I responded, debit card.

If you said earlier, I overlooked it...what kind of phone is this? I text way more than I talk, and with a 3 line ATT family plan, we have tons of rollover minutes each month. I would love to knock that expense down.

Especially since I wussed out, and clung to my DirecTV for another season of Sunday Ticket.

Edit: Never mind, I re-read and found it.

***Update***

I was so excited to finally dump conventional phone companies that I just had to try out my new disposable. I accidentally hit the "Browser" button twice, which deducted $.50 x 2 = 1 minute, then I made a call and burned another 2 minutes! That's 3 just today!

Nah, by my calculations, the 137 minutes remaining on it should last the entire length of service remaining, which is.... (checking) 149 days. When one or both of those run out, I can get a 1 year card + 400 minutes (which automatically double for the life of the phone) = 800 new minutes plus 1 year of service for $124.99 which will definitely last me the full year. (Many other options & configs of time + service to be mixed & matched as well).

I should have done this 10 years ago.

I also started buying firewood last year. You know, to burn in those decorative cutouts they have inside houses with ducting to the roof that people tend to hide with televisions and junk. That saves about $400 / month in gas & electric during the colder part of the year. This season I'm buying whole trees (cut & dried) and splitting the wood myself. Because I feel like it.

Is that also a waste of time?

I also fix things around the house myself, and buy the parts & supplies I need from a hardware store. You know, those big buildings where the illegal aliens hang out. Should I just be hiring contractors every time I need to fix some plumbing or the fence? I used to have maids clean every inch of my house on a regular basis, had handymen fixing all forms of random things around the house all the time, pool-boy, landscaper, tree-trimmers.... and hired neighbor kids to walk my dogs... because I used to think like that. Money can literally buy you anything you want. You'll never have to lift a fucking finger. I had all that.

Now I clean the house myself and walk my own dogs. Because throwing money at every single facet of life, is not living. And pissing your money down the drain on a piece of techno junk you don't need because you think it makes you a "pimp" or a "baller" in anyone's eyes is the epitome of idiocy.

I wipe only with two dollar bills.
