btw, if you going to be working for BP and you are "Paying" for any classes you are getting ripped off. Everything I have heard that there is no cost for any training to go do oil clean up work. So you paying $600 ??? you sure about that?

Hey guys i just posted about how we should save Haiti on facebook. someone give me props!

Actually, we have the same training programs going on here in the Florida Keys, and I'm pretty sure they cost the same.

You do have to get certified as a hazmat worker, according to what they are telling us down here, and you have to pay for it yourself. It's like the fact that you have to pay to get your own CDL before you can be hired as a truck driver.

I heard about all this through a SCUBA divers/boat owners club that I hang with that has members in the keys.

i'm on a boat. a motherfucking oil cleanup boat.

Good for you for doing something about the situation. People should stop being such negative nancy boys about it though.

Agent 488 07-01-2010 04:09 PM

fletch's life just kind of sums up america's state of affairs right now: from creative internet entrepreneur to cleaning up toxic disaster sites.

the microcosm mirrors the macrocosm.

It's cracking me up that you guys are all ragging Fletch about waiting so long to start helping (personally I couldn't care less one way or another about this), but nothing from you guys about the fact the the administration is only NOW accepting help from the dozen or more foreign countries that have been offering help, and equipment, some since 3 days after the fire/spill started.

I would think that the fact that the government, which runs the EPA and is supposed to be handling this, has been so concerned with the union vote that it took 2 months to start taking offshore help.... while the oil just keeps spreading and spreading.... would have you guys screaming from the rafters.

Really weird to me.

...and I say this as a very active diver/boater in south florida. My wife and I have already discussed it, and we will be volunteering to help if and when the oil gets here.

BP is warning of a scam in which people are being offered training and jobs for a fee.

BP spokesman Neil Chapman said today that BP does not charge to hire and train applicants. He also said BP is working with local authorities to find those operating the scam and prosecute them.
I've heard a million times on the radio, that no one contracted to do oil clean up work is having to pay to work or pay for the training needed to do the work. Since everyone has to get their hazmat certs to do oil clean up work, I can't see how they say "no one has to pay for training" and then charge people $600 to take the classes they need to do the work. Sounds like a scam.

Fletch XXX 07-01-2010 05:39 PM

OK I have set up directory where I will be uploading pics and documenting the experience as I go.

http://www.ch33rs.com/oil-spill/

To clarify, the course is $600 but not only is it free for people being trained you are paid for your time there, so theres no confusion on that. I am not paying for any training, quit reaching. Not sure what class I am taking tomorrow, there is an 8 hour one and a 40 hour one, I have no idea - just told to show up.

Secondly, as I said, I have been trying to do this for awhile now, and the reason it is taking so long for people to get on the water is they were originally only hiring unemployed fisherman and people affected locally for these jobs. Actually that is still the unsaid policy, however, I am getting on with a Captain who knows me. He called my uncle two days ago and asked him if he knew any men who wanted to get on his boats... he said yes.

Since I am not unemployed or directly affected by this oil spill I still have not gotten a call from DRC. DRC is the contractor in charge of operations. Or one of them. I have been hired through friend of the family captain who is putting his 20 boats on the water and needed 40 guys. 2 to a boat + a captain. Got the call today, was not expecting it. I put my name out to everyone I knew, since my family has had to fire all their employees, I didnt want to infringe and take positions that would better go to those unemployed by this. My uncle had to fire his 20+ employees and then rehire them as oil spill workers, and there is no wya he would choose me over them, and that is also why I havent gone out yet until now.

Please, just stop with the nonsense and accusations you guys really have no idea what is going on here, you just want to bash me.

For those who are genuinely interested in my experience as it happens, please just bookmark and visit this directory: http://www.ch33rs.com/oil-spill/

I will update as I can, as I said, I have no idea what I will be doing, just told to "be there" in the morning. Rolling out at 6:30 am.

Ive been waiting weeks to get call from DRC, but nothing came. Finally got a call at 11 am today and was scheduled for physical at 1 pm. All I know is where to show up tomorrow, this is how its been for weeks. No one knows anything just being shifted around, I went to town hall one day, another command center the next no one can tell you anything, these type of emergency operations seem to be highly unorganized. Ive driven hundreds of miles back and forth from place to place trying to get involved.

Anyhow, I will post images as I can and photo notes to go with the images.

Thanks for the support, I will not let trolls detract from what I am trying to do here.

Good cuz there is a bunch of hate in here from people who aren't doing anything to help this whole mess. I'm so glad you'll be there helping and I wish I could do more. This is only becoming a bigger disaster everyday and that sucks!

yeah drama queen we all live to bash you (again thinking everything in the world revolves around you).

Funny you say everyone down here should do the call to duty bullshit but then you explain it is only suppose to be those who are unemployeed because of the oil spill that can do the work. Make up your fucking mind. Which you are not unemployed because if it but yet you still trying to take someone's spot who is. Nice job asshole. People losing their livelyhood and trying to get on with BP and you trying to take someone else's place because you got a hair up your ass because you want to "make a difference" or either you doing it for the money, either way pretty shitty. Good thing you wont last long, if you even go at all so that spot frees back up for the real people affected by this disaster.

You are either posting about how fun it will be or how hard it will be, don't know if you got your head up your ass or in the clouds, you really sound like a 16 year old kid starved for attention.

You really are a disgrace to the people down here and the real people who have been affected by this.

After seeing the white pelicans turned black (my cousins iphone vids) from the bay near us, I decided it was now or never, and went down to sign up. Its not easy to get on, you gotta take a BP HAZMAT (hazardous material) class (40hours) and take drug test, physical exam etc,... but in the end I keep thinking of my grandfather taking me fishing in these waters as a kid and there will be no fishing from them for a very long time - I MUST help.

My uncles/cousins have had to shut down their shrimping businesses, lay off all their workers in teir Fishing Charter businesses and there will be no work for a long time. Its a sad state down here and I have to help, I simply must. My family has provided the coast guard with camps to sleep and are even shuttling them (on airboats and flatboats) back and forth to drop off points and are heavily involved in the cleanup, so I really want to be a part of this.

That's great Fletch that you are able to not just say this sucks but actually are able to do something about it. I can only imagine the determination you must have to help the cause when it hits home like it has for you and your family.

Good luck and document what you can. It will be very interesting to hear and see your first hand report.

Many people are trying to get on doing this, yes, but they are focusing on local people. So not sure of the situation with those you know, but I have plenty of family out on water as I type this.

After seeing so many in my family go, I have decided that this is something I shoulnt pass up. Spending weeks out on water sounds so refreshing right now!

Props for going to do it.

One thing that I know is gonna happen though is after this is all over, all those converted fishing boats are going to be next to useless for catching shrimp and fish. They will all be highly contaminated with oil and no way will they be allowed to be used again for fishing.

I'm betting that's gonna be the next big thing that screws over the fishermen out there that are helping do this.

Can I ask two real questions?

1. Are you getting paid by BP for this?
2. The $600 cost of the course you had to take, did BP cover that as well?

Seems like you and your family really care for your hometown and much respect to you guys for all the help you are giving. I just hope you guys will all be compensated and these bastards - BP - made to pay every damn cent possible for this disaster.

Good luck out there and stay safe.

1. Yes he is getting paid, and they are paying pretty well depending on what you are doing, if you are using your boat etc. There is also a long waiting list for people WHO WORKED IN THE SEAFOOD INDUSTRY who are still not working yet. But yet a porn banner designer has found his way on because his family is connected down there. He even admitted this himself in this thread.

2. I don't know why he mentioned the cost of the course other than to brag or make himself sound important. All training costs to work for BP is coverd by BP, so there is no need to say "A $600 training course". You took a fucking training course, get over it.

I read the whole thread bf and didn't get a sense of bragging about course money.

Why the fuck would he brag about a few hundred for course money? Why the fuck would you work in an oil infested daddy killer zone is beyond me?!

Give the dude a break, what connections do you need to go slop up some black shit?

Still think it's a bad idea health-wise to be doing the clean-up work however much they pay. Can't unfuck yourself once you've spent a while absorbing nasty shit and spending the next 40 years not as well as you should have been is silly.

LOL that is the same shit that was on there yesterday. A picture of a doctor's table, a couple street signs, an "authorized personnel only" sign. Some guys sitting around, a couple boats at a dock, and some dumpsters with a tarp over them. Wow exciting. thanks for sharing and btw, I didn't click any of your google links.

but seriously, why don't you address the question of why he is bumping someone else who is now unemployed because of the oil spill from working, that needs the money and stop trying to bump your shit so you can make a couple bucks from adwords. :2 cents:
