Google verifying your email account by phone?

Not sure if this is a regular thing but i never had this happen untill today.

I always use gmail for my random emailing purposes, and today AFTER logging in with my password i get redirect and asked for my phone number so they can send me a textmessage to verify my account.

I have 2 different gmail accounts, one for random emails to friends, and one for random emails to business people i dont know to well.

Didnt have a problem sending in my phonenumber and getting verified, but what does google do with these numbers?

Had it before on a brand new account set up in ordinary register a gmail but not on another brand new account set up from an invitation the same day.

Your numbers now on a database and being monitored 24/7 by Google's World Domination Department.

Well this one i used for about 5-6 years now. Thats the weird thing.
Cant be someone tried hacking into the account, then they figured i needed to verify it.

Dunno either. Its weird ive been using these accounts for so long, and never had any verification done. If they do this a lot, it would mean they have a freaking HUGE database of phonenumbers.

It's to stop people creating duplicate accounts, since a (new) phone number is relatively costly to acquire.

Course it also means they have another item of data to cross link your search profile with.

vonage. New phone number is 5$ per month.. and I think its more than just that I think its a measure to verify you are who you claim.. if you say you are steve smith and the phone number comes back to a different name then they can easily pass that info on during any sort of an investigation.

News to me, although I have not set up any gmail in a few years.

I have noticed that a lot of freebie providers (craigslist, gmail, etc.) seem to be going this way from what people have been saying on the boards. My guess is it's to cut down on the duplicate accounts, spam, T.O.S. violators.

They do it for suspicious accts as well as new accts. Had one of my gmail accts that is about 5 years old require verification as apparently someone had hacked it and sent out about 100 spam emails. Verified via text message then was taken to the change password screen.

I have also used this same number to verify multiple gmail accts so I am not sure why you would need more than 1 number for verifying gmail accts unless you were upto something they do not approve of.

They have been doing this for at least 6 months randomly. I bought 100 2 year old gmail acounts for setting up blogger blogs the other day and when I went to set up the blogs a few of them were instantly locked for phone verification.

So, I went to a nearby cellphone store and bought some mobile phone sim cards and activated them, only paid a few bucks each and now i have nearly bulletproof gmails.

Hmm yeah, my earlier bit about numbers being "relatively" costly to acquire isn't so right, I guess... I just remembered my local supermarket sells SIMs for $AUD2 ($USD1.75). Bet the carrier would be pissed, the SIM and allocation value of that number is probably worth more than that!

I havent tried it yet cause I still have sim cards but I've heard you can do more than 1 per phone #.
