Guess WHO is Going to help PAY for the Gulf Oil Spill???

YOU! ..If House Minority leader and corporate bankster stooge John Boehner has his way.

Boehner: Government (i.e. Taxpayers) Should Help Pay For Oil Spill

Congressional Democrats and the White House are toying with different ways to force BP to cover the costs of damages from the Gulf oil spill. But they face stiff opposition from industry...and it seems leading Republicans. In response to a question from TPMDC, House Minority Leader John Boehner said he believes taxpayers should help pick up the tab for the clean up.

"I think the people responsible in the oil spill--BP and the federal government--should take full responsibility for what's happening there," Boehner said at his weekly press conference this morning.

Hope you enjoy $300 per pound shrimp.

US government profited from BPs drilling (taxes), US tax payers were biggest consumers of BPs products, etc... it doesn't sound THAT ridiculous that now they would help out with cleaning up the mess...

everyone likes to point fingers at BP for screwing up, but the truth is, US consumers indirectly caused this by demanding plenty of cheap oil...

We already pay for it... with every gallon we buy/pump. Look at the taxes charged and the break down of what they are to be used for.

This doom and gloom is nothing new, quit falling for the hype

Though the White House is working towards raising the cap on liability damage claims from the current $75 Million to 10 billion (as an appeasement, and to put a hard cap on BP's total liability), it will still be a small drop in the bucket as the REAL cost is estimated to be closer to around 1,000 billion (1 Trillion). That means a WHOLE LOTTA a tax payer dollars potentially will be involved.

Bend over, and lube up..

No, BP caused this by cutting corners on safety.

Vietnamese shrimp suppliers are the unintended beneficiary of the spill fiasco. Next to the Gulf, Vietnam is probably the biggest supplier of shrimp for US consumption.

While BP does make a ton of money they are one of those companies that actually pays little or nothing in federal income tax. Exxon is another one. They have record breaking profits, but don't pay a dime in income taxes because of the way that they structure their companies.

those assholes make billions in profit every month. they blatantly shortcut safety methods that insure this kind of shit doesn't happen. just so they could make an extra buck and you think we should help pay for it?

fuck those cock sockets i say we stick it to 'em. the entire bill that is.

especially when they would rather try to cap the well instead of blowing it up and ending this retarded fiasco. only reason the shit hasn't been stopped yet is because they are still trying to save the well. they don't give a fuck about the clean up or damage it's doing to the marine life and the environment. because they know the politicians they have in their pocket are going to make us pay for their fucking mess.

you're high on dope if you think it's partially our fault and we should foot some of the bill.

btw heres a live feed so you can watch the oil spewing into the ocean http://www.bpoilspillgulf.com/bp-oil...live-feed.html enjoy :D

I don't know how much they pay in taxes, but I'm sure it's still quite significant... don't forget taxes on gas they sell, taxes that people pay on dividends they receive, and 10 other taxes that they pay either directly or indirectly... plus lets not forget the 1000s of jobs that they provide... I'm sure it all adds up to billions and billions of $$ for US government coffers...

In what ways did they cut corners? As far as I know they install all safety equipment that is required by law. There are claims that they failed to install some optional additional safety equipment, how true that is and what effects it would have had on this accident, is debatable.

It was a tragic accident, there is no doubt about that, but saying that they caused this, is a bit off base.... It was an accident, it could have happened to any other oil drilling company out there...

From what I have read there are safety valves that they could have installed but did not because they are expensive. If they had these valves in place they would have shut the leak off right from the start. At least that is what I had read, can't find the link to the article right now though.

Pretty much everyone on the rig has told the same story. The well was over a month behind schedule and BP wanted to them to speed up. The engineers on the well said they needed to slow down and use drilling mud instead of seawater to continue drilling. A rep from BP flew out to the well and pulled rank on the rig operators, forcing them to continue. A few hours later the rig blew up.

BP was responsible for the actual explosion and they were complicit in the deregulation that allowed them to operate pretty much without rules. BP also filed a bogus clean up plan when obtaining the license to construct the rig, full of errors and phony telephone numbers, leaving them totally unprepared for a leak.

I don't think the taxpayers share any of the blame for this mess.

Not so sure. I see where your cynical view is coming from but politically it's going to be popular to pile on BP, so the taxpayer might get a break on this one. Even republicans are going to be able to earn some political capitol by standing up to BP.

Tell me how many representatives will be willing to speak on behalf and in defense of BP, it's not many.
