If Google told you to jump off a cliff, would you?

A Utah woman used Google Maps' walking directions on her Blackberry and was given directions to walk onto a highway. She got hit and is now suing Google for damages.

Sadly, there was such case in California during the 60s. It changed premises liability law forever. It used to be that if you were an uninvited guest or intruder, the premises owner doesn't have a duty to you to keep the premises safe. Not anymore.

When Google draws directions through highway, I think it is implied that person is travelling by car.

To walk on a highway - a person has to make this reasonable choice himself / herself.

People must look for pedestrian sidewalks.

A few years back there was a couple in Southern Oregon that used Google maps to make it from the valley over to the coast in the middle of winter. The map gave them two options as far as routes go and they chose the shorter of the two. As they turned onto one of the routes they saw a sign that said the road might be closed due to excessive snow and to enter at your own risk. They didn't turn back when the snow got to 10 inches and ended up getting stuck in the snow. The entire family died. They found the wife and kids in the car and they found the guy about a mile or two from it trying to walk back and get help.

Had they turned around and taken the other route the roads were 100% plowed and it would have been an easy drive.

Not quite as bad, but I heard something similar about a woman here who was in a little hatchback, and blindly followed the directions on her GPS navigator, which routed her through isolated (and badly maintained) forest roads. She ran out of petrol or her car broke down (can't remember which) and due to the fact that she was effectively in the middle of nowhere, also out of mobile phone range, she wasn't found for about 4 days. She did survive.

My wife is a bit like that, she relies too much on her nav, and doesn't know how to read a good old map. I still catch her programming her nav for destinations she's been to 10-15 times already.

James Kim, the tech editor from CNET? If so, he died but his wife and daughters were rescued. I drove the road that I think they were on a while back but it was in the summer. Hell of a road even then. Runs from near Grants Pass to just north of Gold Beach.

Well, I don't think there's anyone to blame in this case, it's the same as if you wanted to blame a meteorologist for a weather forecast, the nature doesn't care.

Also a story that illustrates, that the one that controls information and media can control basically any person in the world

Imagine you'd hack only one single super popular service such as say Google Maps - you could cause a total collapse within hours - the common sense is vanishing as people in general tend to rely more and more on different "gadgets"

Yeah that was the guy. I thought his wife and kids died, but I couldn't remember his name. Now that you mention it I looked him up, you are correct, they did survive, looks like the burned the tires on the car to stay warm.

Seems to be quite regularly something in the newspapers here along the lines of my GPS told me to turn right so I drove into a lake/off a cliff/followed a farm track for 7 miles and got stuck.

No sympathy from me.

The McDonalds coffee case is often spoken of as an example of a frivolous lawsuit. But it actually wasn't. You can read about it here: http://www.lectlaw.com/files/cur78.htm

or here is an excerpt from same:

"After receiving the order, the grandson pulled his car forward and stopped momentarily so that Liebeck could add cream and sugar to her coffee. (Critics of civil justice, who have pounced on this case, often charge that Liebeck was driving the car or that the vehicle was in motion when she spilled the coffee; neither is true.) Liebeck placed the cup between her knees and attempted to remove the plastic lid from the cup. As she removed the lid, the entire contents of the cup spilled into her lap.

The sweatpants Liebeck was wearing absorbed the coffee and held it next to her skin. A vascular surgeon determined that Liebeck suffered full thickness burns (or third-degree burns) over 6 percent of her body, including her inner thighs, perineum, buttocks, and genital and groin areas. She was hospitalized for eight days, during which time she underwent skin grafting. Liebeck, who also underwent debridement treatments, sought to settle her claim for $20,000, but McDonalds refused. "

ouch

That was the first thing I thought of when I saw this on the news.
