Not quite as bad, but I heard something similar about a woman here who was in a little hatchback, and blindly followed the directions on her GPS navigator, which routed her through isolated (and badly maintained) forest roads. She ran out of petrol or her car broke down (can't remember which) and due to the fact that she was effectively in the middle of nowhere, also out of mobile phone range, she wasn't found for about 4 days. She did survive.
My wife is a bit like that, she relies too much on her nav, and doesn't know how to read a good old map. I still catch her programming her nav for destinations she's been to 10-15 times already.
