So it's started...the next big change.

I said this would happen a long time ago and I remember everyone laughing at Bill Gates when M$ bought WebTV and it's patents.

Well I said that cable companies would eventually start pushing web content right to the TV set totally bypassing the typical internet and computers. This is why they are pushing so hard to do away with net neutrality because they will have a green light to do this and take total control of the net.

Well Verizion is now offering "limited" web content via their TV boxes with Fios. "Limited" being the keyword here because they are making their moves to decide what you will have access too by the deals they make with the various web sites and so.. IE Facebook, Youtube essentially the big shots.

The reason this is a danger to the net as a whole, is because they will be able to sell this on the convenience of not needing a computer as you will get it all on your TV. Eventually they will get a nice bundle of websites in their little service that keep the average web surfer happy and will be-able to keep parents happy by having the control to block porn and so on.

The danger to the web side of this industry, is we will be left out as the cable companies will much rather sell their PPV porn than let users buy memberships at some 3rd party site where they get no cut.

This will eventually mean less new surfers coming to what we all know of today as the "real" intenet, instead getting sucked up and held inside limited AOL type services provided by their cable companies.

They of course can't kill the web in it's self but in a way they will as they will be stifling off new and existing users that aren't as savvy. Bill Gates will of course be laughing all the way to the bank as his little WebTV venture turns out to be his biggest money maker ever as he will be making money on all of it via his patents.

Hmm I see how this could be a problem but seriously, cable internet is like 30-40 dollars, for only having access to facebook, youtube, cnn, and some other large sites like that it would need to be like $5 a month lol...

Secondly, you are missing the related trend... TV views for popular shows are going DOWN! Internet episodes are going through the roof!!!! If anything people are ditching their TV service for internet only now that you can get cheap high speed and use an HD tv for a monitor, or buy a large LCD monitor like 24 inches or something.

So I don't think this is going to be a problem.

This is just the start.. by the time this gets popular enough to hurt us they will have a nice little bundled up package. The reason it will eventually be successful is the fact that most computer users aren't web or computer savvy.

Having the web via the TV and via a rented TV box will be easier and cheaper than buying a new computer every few years. TBH, most users don't even need a computer and this will fit their needs allowing them to have access to the limited web on every TV in their house.

I'm sure the cable companies will be smart enough to add in ports to hook up things like Xboxes and Play Stations that will keep the kids happy as well. 5 years we will have a new generation of web surfers that don't know any better and that's when it all starting going down hill for us.

The big cable companies will have to go with some type of buisness model like this or they will die out. Web based TV and movies are getting better and cheaper all the time.

I disagree. I think what they want to do is what kind of content people would like to surf for from their couch. It's not about limiting access at all. It's about keeping you glued to your TV, counting who is online, and offering the stats to advertisers.

Porn had it's time on TV, then on the Net.

Now it has found its new home, MOBILE.
