Cron?!

I just put up a new topsite the other day, and don't have enough traffic yet for it to rerank on it's own. Does anyone know how I set up cron so that it reranks every 30 minutes and resets every 7 days?

If it's Autorank, there's instructions in the manual.

It would kinda depend on the server paths to the executables for the rerank and reset functions.

I always use Webmin (www.webmin.com) to schedule cronjobs. Easy enough for a non unix geek like me.

I assume you already know how to set up a cronjob and you have telnet/SSH access to your server. The syntax for the crontab would be:

30 * * * * /usr/bin/perl /path/to/your/rerank.pl
0 23 1 * * /usr/bin/perl /path/to/your/reset.pl

Ok, makemegrowl....I'll try to describe it a bit better.

You have telnet or SSH access to your server, right?

Good. Take this and paste it into Notepad:

30 * * * * /usr/bin/perl /path/to/your/rerank.pl
0 23 1 * * /usr/bin/perl /path/to/your/reset.pl

Replace the paths to the .pl files with your own (your perl path might be different, too). Save it as growl.txt. FTP it to your root server folder in ascii mode. Are you with me so far? Good.

Now, open up a telnet/SSH session. Change to the server root directory (you're probably there anyway). On the command line, type in "crontab growl.txt" (without the quotes).

crontab -l (shows you what cronjobs are currently running)
crontab -r (removes current cronjob)
crontab -e (lets you edit the cronjob)

Failing that...get your admin/tech help to do it for you.

I found a rerank and reset, but they don't have .pl behind them...or any extension for that matter...are these the ones?

just send the paths to the files to your sysadmin and tell them how often you want it to run... the admins have always been willing to set the cron jobs, except when Earthlink hosted our server:-(... you would think at $300 a month they would bend over backwards...
