Will The Netbook Soon Be As Obsolete As The VHS Player?

Is this the beginning of the end of the netbook? According to Lyla Katz's article, the iPad seems to have gobbled up a major portion the market, with consumers now opting for the new Apple offering. Will the netbook be turning obsolete in the next few months?

Quote:
CUPERTINO, Calif. ? A recent report by Morgan Stanley reveals that growth in the netbook industry has tumbled since the beginning of the year.

According to Fortune.com, the report attributes the slowdown to Apple?s iPad, which garnered tremendous publicity before and after it hit the market.

The analyst who conducted the report cited data from March showing that 44 percent of surveyed consumers who were planning to purchase an iPad were doing so instead of purchasing a notebook or netbook computer, the largest category of cannibalized products.

you canīt use an ipad for work in the same way that you use a w7 netbook.
you cant even use a pendrive with the ipad. Its a very different product that
covers another moment of the day imho.

Until the iPad can do everything a netbook/laptop can I dont see it taking over the industry. I know a couple people who havent touched their iPad since the first week since it couldnt do as much stuff right now. what apple has planned down the road could help it take over but not yet.

I don't really understand the marklet for netbooks or ipads. I either bring a full sized Win XP or newer laptop with me if I am out all day on shoot locations or out of town at a convention. And like many people, I also have my smartphone in my pocket if I am just out running errands or elsewhere. I don't see a need for an intermediate sized device in between a pocket sized device and a desktop replacement laptop.

The VHS Player is already obsolete, you say.

iPad does not have the full functionality of a computer or laptop.

Netbooks are smaller and lighter than a laptop. Some would say that anything with a screen more than fifteen inches and over isn’t a netbook.

What nobody here seems to get is that the majority of people buying a netbook are not buying it for work. They use it to surf and check emails. Its smaller and easier to take with them on vacations and cheaper than a regular laptop. The iPad is perfect for this and thats why it is taking over the netbook market. And they are a paying a premium price for the convenience and cool factor.

Ipads are overpriced junk. Can't do half what a netbook can do. No flash? What fucking joke. Most people a buying an Ipad are Apple cultists that would buy a pile of dog crap as long as it was painted white and had an apple logo on it.

Ipads are twice the price. Can you go to Hulu on an ipad? Nope. Can I watch videos from my favorite sites that use flash? Nope. Oh and some of use still like an actual keyboard.

Netbook=superior

I like it because its small and cheap

Pro
-has keyboard, excellent for typing
-can watch any and all porn easily, perfect for JO on vacations
-cheap (enough) that I don't mind whipping it out in locations where it might get stolen or damaged (i just hope for the best and it was only $250 not $1000 like a laptop)
-has usb so perfect as a secondary backup when I do photoshoots while traveling, put one copy on my external and one copy on the netbook (password protected incase its stolen dee dee dee)

cons
nothing really as long as you dont expect it to behave like a $1000 laptop

ipad doesnt have any of these pros at all so whats the point of it? OH YEAH its cool and hip but so is http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/watches/8e18/
Im not going to buy it though just like I wont buy that watch since I don't see it addressing any need I have that cannot be addressed with another cheaper yet better product.

There are 2 different devices aimed at 2 different market segments.

Netbooks are small and light and can usually run the same software as a PC that the basic PC owner would need.

An iPad is for a more hip consumer and cannot run many basic software that can be useful to a non advance PC user.

So I doubt that the netbook will die because of the iPad. Netbooks may however disappear if consumers do not feel the need to spend $300 for an extra laptop...

people buy the ipad as a gimmick not a serious device , mind you most people buy netbooks for the same reason , but theres enough real users to qualify for a market

and because netbooks generally work the same way your home computer does , just smaller and slower.

ipad's and other niche mobile devices have a learning curve , diff os etc

With an Ipad, you can get a lot of work done faster. Serious work is always done on a station PC, but the Ipad is a smartphone on steroids! I GAIN time by carrying it around with me everywhere (I don't drive). It's perfect if you're always running around in different locations all the time, like I am!

Netbook sales will slow but not because of the iPad. I am Mac guy all around 5 in our family. But I still have one netbook a Dell Mini 10 running Windows 7. It's my "family room" computer for surfing in my lazy boy chair. I also use it to check my code on a Windows machine.

I think Netbook sales will slow as the economy gains momentum. As people feel more comfortable about the economy they won't worry about spending 500 - 700 of nice Windows laptop. A decent netbook cost 300 away and you can multitudes more processing and screen for 500.00.

Just my

Netbooks are great for quick portability, for example if you go to coffe and want to show some shit it comes handy. You can even use it for 24/7 work-i am living proof, since i have hp mininote as my currently only computer. But what it sucks it's speed, cpu jumping often 100%,and i cant play games. Also,i will never buy any of apple shit,i think only mac users buy their crap except maybe ipad and iphone.

Whoever wrote that book clearly has a job that can be accomplished using a browser and an email client. My job requires tools that don't work on an ipad. When I travel I take my MSI Wind netbook. It fits in my carry-on and does almost everything my desktop can do.

An ipad is a toy for fucking around on the internet while you're watching TV or taking a dump which, incidentally, I use my netbook for as well.

Yeah, it's just Mac users buying those ipods. Apparently they each buy hundreds. What a cult.

You can use a portable keyboard with them if you absolutely have to use one to type in a URL or compose an email. Tons better battery life than a netbook and they start up quicker. And those favorite sites of yours wont be using Flash in the near future.

Um I would consider a keyboard as absolutely have to, I can type very quickly since I think 3rd grade at my school we had to take typing class required all through middle school so its like hmm, I can type out words almost as fast as i can think them OR fuddle around on a little touch keyboard... yeah not happening, im too used to the speed. Plus its great when you have like a handwritten paper you want to put into a word processor, just put the paper down and ksdjfsdkjfdklk bam its typed into the computer... I assume lots of people on here can type quickly and some not so much lol but I dont see ever not needing a keyboard, its the absolute quickest and easiest method, FAR FAR beyond anything else.

I dont need the thing for fun, its supposed to be efficient for work.

Pretty much what everyone's said here.

The NetBooks are a smaller, and semi-usable product, but are in no way comparable to their big brothers. Sure, if you try really hard, or only need specific tasks, they do great.

The truth is that the NetBook is being taken over by SmartPhones and custom applications. Shit, my crappy LG phone has a TV applet, XM radio streamer, and after sticking a microsd card in it, an encrypted copy of my sources that I can bluetooth over to anywhere I may need it. Oh, and about a gig of my music.

Netbooks are a great concept, but they're just not as useful anymore.

I bought an eeePC awhile ago, and after getting it all setup, found I used it to browse YouTube during commercials so I had something to do.. even though I have a DVR. I ended up selling it to a friend at about 40% of cost just so it'd have a purpose.

Then you could get the keyboard add on. Done.

You're once again missing the main point. You work in the online industry and use computers for work purposes. The vast, vast majority of people dont own a netbook for work purposes, they own them for fun. An iPad works perfectly for them and it loads quicker with a much better battery life.

Most of you fail to understand that the bulk of society uses a computer online to do two things - surfing and email, both of which you can do with the Ipad.

When my wife works from home, she's using their website and checking company email. She can do that off of an Ipad or my fucking cell phone for that matter.

Instead of just spewing anti Apple rhetoric, how about actually researching the product. You're just as bad as the "fanboys" who buy anything with the Apple logo.

That article is a bit detached from the real world. There is a reason Wal Mart is the biggest retailer on Earth and it's because most people don't have much money.

That being said a huge number of people who bought netbooks were people who simply couldn't afford a full size laptop/desktop. Then netbooks starting getting a bit more expensive and full size notebooks starting getting cheaper. You can get a full size 15 inch laptop for $400 now. That's what is chipping into the netbook market most.

Also, the netbook was always sort of a fad and a tweener type technology to fill a gap.

Not to mention, last year 35 million + netbooks were sold. One million iPads have been sold. To say the iPad is what is chipping away at the netbook market is sort of silly. If fact, I bet most ipad buyers own a netboook as well.

You can read the entire article here.

Lyla Katz must love the taste of Steve Jobs' cock smothered in shit to write something that stupid.

There is a huge difference between gobbling up a major portion of the market, and the GROWTH of the netbook market stagnating.

Notably, over half of those customers were planning to purchase an iPad instead of an Apple notebook, with the remainder forgoing a non-Apple netbook or notebook.
How about comparing apples to apples as well? Why the fuck were Apple notebook sales dragged in to the article when it was supposed to be about the ipad and netbooks?

Someone slap the editor over at xbiz pls. k thx.

I'm surprised that they don't mention the Acer dual core netbooks.

I've had my Acer AS1410-2285 with an Intel SU2300 1.2ghz dual core processor since December '09.

It's a great travel netbook with an 11.6" screen, 2gb ram, and a full size keyboard.

actually they did

Though Asus has been offering a dual-core Netbook, this kind of design is rare because it shoehorns a more power-hungry Atom chip built for small desktop PCs into a larger laptop-sized casing.

They "might" be around longer than we think... I use my Netbook for a charging station for all my/wifes/kids other itouch/pod/phone things, game things, cameras, etc... travel with it, take it with you in the car.

Telling ya now, best battery charger you can buy.

Not everyone has an iphone. Apps often cost money. Why pay for apps to do things a netbook can do for FREE?

Bingo... I can't remember the number, but it's rather high percentage of people that only check email and read news. This was a few years back, it include the dialup and cafe people and it truly was a staggering majority of the people, so with facebook today as a integrated thing, it has to be off the chart.

This doesn't cause trouble just for the netbooks, in my opinion. These are extreme bottles necks of traffic that swallow up and contain people for years, basically making it rather hard for our Industry to reach these people.

A netbook is twice the machine for half the price. So the answer is: lol hell no!

Netbooks can't be replaced.
Netbooks have a rock solid presence in the real (business) world with multiple applications. I know my sales people and clients love them.

Maybe not a fit for porn slingers but who really cares? The other 99+% of the world wide web is all that matters to serious marketers.

just sayin' ............

you can see youtube, just use mxtube.. and whats wrong with facebook?

if you want things working 100% just by "default".. then it will not happen...
but then again its the same with netbooks.. you will have to install a program or two..
anyways lazy people will just give the same use to an ipad than a netbook or laptop.. which is surfing, read mail and play games..

too much hate for the ipad i dont see the point..

FREE as per "hacked/cracked" you mean?

Acer, not Asus.

I guess they didn't mention the Acer AS1410 & AS1810 lines since they are technically "laptops", even though they have 11.6" screens and fit into the same neoprene sleeve as a 10.1" Acer Aspire One.

It has something to do with Intel only letting manufacturers use Atom processors in anything that is marketed as a netbook.

P.S. Nice avatar. I graduated UF in 2001.
