With any camera with a built in flash it's usually a good idea to put a bit of toilet paper over the flash unit.

The top two things you can do with a consumer digital camera are A. use the manual white balance and B. try to never use the on camera flash. Either use natural sunlight or practice bouncing some halogens with white foamcore (if strobes aren't in the budget.) There's tons more of course, but those are the two factors which will make the biggest difference for an amateur with a basic consumer camera.

Or maybe some toilet paper over the viewer's eyes!

"Good" is a very broad term to use without some kind of definition. What makes a photo of a female good has a lot less to do with the camera and a lot more to do with the model and photographer. With the exception of a few taken by Bunny Yeager, most of the great Bettie Page photos were taken by amateur photo club photographers with equipment that today would seem fairly primitive.

I wrote a booklet, How to Recruit Models for Nude & Erotic Photography which covers how to get models, but also a bit about their psychology. Understanding what the model wants and fears is the first step toward getting good photos out of her. After that, most of it is up to you.

You need to have a knack for thinking of poses, you need to understand a bit about anatomy in order to bring out the best in a girl, and you need to have some idea how to minimize flaws (for example, one very popular model shot by several other photographers on this board other than myself has uneven breasts: one is noticeably smaller than the other and the nipple is a bit smaller and pinched-looking, too. Anybody who shoots her chest straight-on is an asshole. The problem is totally unnoticeable if you shoot her with her shoulders turned a bit one way or the other.

Proportions are a function of distance, too. When you get close to a girl's face, her eyes look very big, but when you look down, her feet look kinda small. Sometimes shooting close up doesn't matter (getting proportions right all over isn't important), but in some cases it is. Proportion is more of a consideration if you want to shoot something resembling a Playboy style. In this case, you'll want to work in an environment where you can set your camera up a fair distance from the model. Shooting porn, you might actually want that "up close and personal" feeling where the breast or pussy is "in your face" and the rest of the body is a bit more distant (think of all those close-up pussy shots with the girl's tits and face in the background.

Anyway, I hope I helped. I wasn't quite sure what you meant by "good quality pictures." If you or anyone else wants some advice, I'm always happy to give up some ICQ time to help out.

The short answer to your question is that whatever it takes to take a good analog shot will help you take a good digital shot.

My ICQ is 48201505.

Lighting is the key. Do it right and your pictures will sizzle.
