Albert Brooks is better in other people's movies than he is in his own:

Taxi Driver
Broadcast News
Out of Sight

Jon 12-27-2002 04:15 AM

george carling and robin williams. thats all you need.

Like all of Albert Brooks' movies Lost in America sorta got lost somewhere and wasn't as good as it could have been. BUT there is a scene in there, i think it's when he finds out he didn't get the promotion and not only that but he was fired ........... one of the funniest scenes i've ever seen, i was literally on the floor of the theater, dying with laughter. Garry Marshall played the boss i think? Haven't seen it a long long time.

I should have mentioned Woody Allen, i just don't like him for his private life, he is brilliant. Which is the movie where he's a hypochondriac? Zelig is a masterpiece of comedy i think but my favorite Woody film is Broadway Danny Rose.

Nobody's mentioned Steve Martin. I think he's great and for anybody over 35 i don't think a comedian ever had the popularity Steve Martin had for about a year or two in the late 70's. It was rock star kind of popularity. I don't know how many times he hosted Saturday Night Live but it's alot and he always did great monologues. He quit standup comedy soon as he got into movies. Most standups hate standup, all they dream about is getting a TV series or a movie career. Except for Jay Leno who still despite making huge money goes out and does standup comedy. Seinfeld also likes standup still.

I think Albert's boss in Lost in America was Michael Greene. I liked the movie, myself.

I believe Steve Martin was actually the very first comic to ever pack stadiums and auditoriums by himself. He created the role of the standup superstar. No one before him had done it. I do like his standup and his comedy songs but most of all I like Planes, Trains and Automobiles :) I do go out of my way to rent/buy Steve Martin movies, even the obscure ones. I enjoyed Novocaine and The Spanish Prisoner. His work as the sadistic dentist in Little Shop of Horrors is also among my favorites.

As for Wopdy Allen, the only personal scandal I know of attached to him is the whole thing with Soon-Yi. While that is a littl weird, it isn't all that bad. She's not his real daughter, the whole thing was consensual and they're still married. No matter what, he should have been up at the top of my list with Bill and Richard. The man is pure genius. As a standup he is unsurpasses and I love his movies, too.

I can't believe how funny that dog is. I have only seen a few of the routines, but wow... I have a WMV of the Star Wars premier and it just cramps me up with laughter every time I watch it.

Some people say that, but I am American and I love it. My father is American and he introduced me to it. He loved it :) Well, he was from Ireland but he came to the USA when he was still young, so... he's more American than anything else :)

I do have a bent for British comedy, though. I should have had Rowan Atkinson at the top of my list, too. Have any of you ever heard the School Headmaster routine? Unbelievable. I also love Fawlty Towers, Blackadder I, II, III and IV (more Rowan Atkinson), Are You Being Served and Red Dwarf.

In order:

1 Steven Wright
2 Geoge Carlin
3 Chris Rock
4 Richard Pryor
5 Eddie Murphy
6 Cheech and Chong

The last three were funny when I was a kid. Not sure if I'd think so now. I never see Steven Wright CD's in the store. He must be out of print or effectively out of print.

Vendot 12-27-2002 05:22 AM

Bill Hicks was awesome..... I'll add Richard Pryor. I always loved those Richard Pryor & Gene Wilder movies.

Ever seen stir crazy? Awesome.

Diceman was always crap.... without drink no-one would ever laugh at him except the WWF community.

Naughty 12-27-2002 05:25 AM

In random order, my top 15:
1. Stephen Lynch
2. Brian Regan
3. David Spade
4. Dana Carvey
5. George Lopez
6. John Leguizamo (I'm still looking for his last HBO show: "sexaholic")
7. Mitch Hedberg (VERY funny, dry humor)
8. Sinbad (clean, good humor)
9. Chris Rock (I have all of it, but Roll With the New is actually the only really funny one)
10. Rodney Carrington (hilarious)
11. Andrew Dice Clay
12. George Carlin (all of it is a MUST, my absolute #1)
13. Carlos Mencia
14. Bill Hicks
15. Sam Kinison
(16. bonus: Larry the Cable guy (new to me, comedy like Rodney Carrington)

Ok this thread made me laugh!
First off all it asks "who is the funniest comedian of all time"
Not even one person has got it right so far!!!!

The funniest comedian of all time is a Scottish guy called Billy Connolly!! This guy does gigs infront of 50,000 people!!!

I know you will all be thinking he is Scottish and you haven't heard of him but he has been around for ages and lives in America and is very big over there!

He can make you laugh by telling you about his life and what he done when he was younger..... Its not an act he talks the truth and makes it funny!!!

BILLY IS THE MAN!!!

also Lee Evans is Funny as well.........

Yeah I was using the 50k as an example. He has done much bigger and is totaly original and none of this repetitive shit which most comedy acts go through!

I would really advise some of you who like comedy to go out and search for a Billy Connolly DVD or VHS, I swear it will be the best $30 you will ever spend!!! I got his new one "Live in Dublin" and I have warched it 3 times, each time you pick up new things and its even funnier!!!

:thumbsup

cronos 12-27-2002 07:52 AM

Pryor hands down. Carlin and Murphy runners up. Fawlty Towers the best 12 episodes ever. Curb your enthusiasm is the new shit. Totally hillarious.

Chris Rock has a cool thang going on too. Margaret Cho not bad. Not bad at all.

Oh and Black Adder is the second best show ever

DrunkenMaster 12-27-2002 08:16 AM

Bob Saget ?

:1orglaugh

Ian 12-27-2002 08:17 AM

Best ever?

The three stoofges have been watched and laughed at for 4 generations and Red Skelton was pretty good.

Ian 12-27-2002 08:18 AM

Make that The Three Stooges. LOL

First of all I understand what you say about Americans not finding some things funny....

But I believe everyone would find Billy Connolly funny.... he is just so lively and honest about life and makes it funny...

Do me a favour and download something from Kazaa from Billy and listen to it..... then come back here and let me know what you think or icq me 164643450 !!!

Yep. I reserve the right to edit.... my list is now:

Billy Connolly
Richard Pryor
Bill Hicks
Bob Monkhouse

No-one can ever beat the man, Bob Monkhouse for sheer wit, oneliners and unbeatable speed. They say this man is the most underated comedian of all time.

I would add Steve Martin but he's really gone downhill, ever since he started doing those dumb "Parenting" movies. Its like the fucking PTA sponsors him.

People who make me laugh include (in no particular order):
1) Benny Hill
2) Rowan Atkinson
3) Danny Kaye
4) Jackie Gleason
5) George Burns
6) Anna Russell
7) Milton Berle
8) Red Skelton
9) Red Buttons
10) Jerry Lewis
11) Jonathan Winters
12) Art Carney

I like the older comedians better than the new bunch...

Brian Regan

Melody 12-27-2002 11:33 AM

I'm descended from 200 years of hillbillies and prissyass pilgrims and I LOVE Monty Python...and a lot of John Cleese stuff. Terry Gilliam is, after all, a Yank. I like Billy Connolly, too.

My list o' prejudices:

Paula Poundstone
Jon Stewart (best standup I've ever seen in my life)
George Carlin
Bill Mahr
Richard Pryor (early, angry)
Bill Cosby (early, unstuffy)

I'll put in a vote for Steve Martin, too. His early shit was great. "I believe Ronald Reagan will make this country what it once was...a barren wasteland covered with ice."

My favorite's gotta be the late, great Brother Theodore (someone most of you are too young to remember).

OY 12-27-2002 11:44 AM

Chris Rock is up there... Jim Belushi have a big star too...

I agree, Bill Hicks is amazing. How has no one mentioned Lenny Bruce yet?!?! Come on! he invented the style of humor that made Hicks, Carlin, Maher, Black and so many others famous.

also really enjoy Eddie Izzard, Dave Cross, Dave Chapelle, Chris Rock, Seinfield, and young Georle Carlin before he resorted to dick and fart jokes.

UnseenWorld 12-27-2002 12:28 PM

Has anyone mentioned LUCLONELY?

I considered Lenny Bruce, but I decided against him. He was funny in the beginning, but after they started busting his shows and harrassing him, EVERY routine was whiny diatribe about the authorities. It got to be nothing but 90 minutes of Lenny Bruce reading from legal papers and trying to make jokes out of things that just weren't funny.

Yup - I was reading through this thread and thinking the same thing "where is Lenny Bruce?".

I'd also have to agree with all of these stand up comics already mentioned:

Steve Martin
David Cross
George Carlin
Woody Allen
Bill Hicks
