Pretty much it. People think these things are some sort of modern tech but the reality is there were some pretty impressive bot scripts back in the late 90's on IRC. Todays yahoo bots ain't got shit on IRC's 90's bots. I use to get a kick out of sitting there watching people having conversations with the one's I would run. They work pretty much the same on forums as in chat. Search macros+bot+chat/forum

Some are pretty elaborate, it's not just a keyword->response lookup... many people have earned PhD's in computer science doing research on constructing bots like these...
