Pretty much it. People think these things are some sort of modern tech but the reality is there were some pretty impressive bot scripts back in the late 90's on IRC. Todays yahoo bots ain't got shit on IRC's 90's bots. I use to get a kick out of sitting there watching people having conversations with the one's I would run. They work pretty much the same on forums as in chat. Search macros+bot+chat/forum

I'm a real person and my posts are on topic. Some people said that I am some kind of bot. A bot can stay on topic and it can get what the topic is from the title of the post and some keywords in the texts. JD is right about the keyword density.

By the way, something about keyword density. Did you know that Google punishes a site in search results if the keyword density is more than about 20%? If the keyword appears in the text more than 20% of the time, Google thinks it must not be real text.

Some are pretty elaborate, it's not just a keyword->response lookup... many people have earned PhD's in computer science doing research on constructing bots like these... :2 cents:
