Over Clocking your machine to render faster
Is this common for video rendering or is it mostly used for gamers?
Anyone have any tips?

who does not want faster renders ? it's very common for video people to OC the machines.
you just need to know how to get as much juice possible without compromising stability.

If you aren't overclocking you are wasting perfectly good hardware... you can get quick and easy 10% increase in performance by just tweaking bios settings...

I have played with overclocking, but find I like stability better. If you want a faster pc, buy the newer parts and run them stock. Unless you *really* know what you're doing and can undo whatever you did at a moment's notice.

Dual Quadcore... Why would I want to overclock?
Overclocking a working/production rig is a suicide. |

Thus the question. If you CAN boost some and get faster renders without causing harm to your machine, why not?

If your machine has OC software, do you still have to mess with BIOS? Or does the software take care of that for you?

It probably depends on the software used, but in BIOS there are usually more settings to tweak... it's kinda like editing html with dreamweaver vs doing it by hand in notepad... the end result is often the same, but if you know what you are doing it's better to tweak the settings yourself by hand...

Mine has OC software but as said I prefer to keep my system running smooth and not consider cooking it. However, with the software, you do not need to mess in BIOS, its got everything on it.

If you do it correctly, you're not "cooking" anything. In fact, you can actually lower the temps.

There's a fair margin possible with clock speeds and also voltages. It's not like the millions of transistors in a CPU all suddenly stop working once you go 0.5% above or below the published specs... but push it far enough and all it takes is for ONE to stop working properly to cause a crash... you just need to find that point then back it off slightly to keep your system stable.
I managed to undervolt a low end E1200 by 30% (1.325v -> 0.900v) and it was still going (at full stress/load) 24 hours later. The beauty of undervolting is that it saves on power and cooling costs without affecting performance. |

i once overclocked my Pentium 2 from 233 to 266 mhz ;)
but since then i prefer when the stuff simply works and is quiet. and this means less fans - not more.

Just finished building my 6core intel today. Final overclock is 4.3ghz(stable).
I do 3D animation rendering, but I'm sure that any speed is good for vid rendering also. Highly recommend this simple water setup for cool temps. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-010-_-Product
