I was 16, young and about stupid but I wanted a new car. So I go walking into a dealership with my boyfriend, the salesman asks what we were looking for so I tell him, I have a look around, I decide which color and say "ok, whats the cash price." He laughed, literally, laughed. I turned and walked out without saying another word and go to the dealership a block away, find what I want make the deal and pay cash that afternoon.

A week later I follow my dad to the dealership so he can drop off his truck for some work, out the door walks the same salesman greets my dad by name and says "oh I didn't know this was your father, have you decided on that truck yet?" I turned around and pointed at the one I bought down the street and said, "I sure have, bought it the same day you laughed at me paying cash for that one over there, wanna see the sales sheet?" He looks at my dad and my dad says to him, "don't look at me, she's the one with money in the family, not me, you know I have financed every truck I have bought here."

$28k(was a lot for a truck in 1988) and a little bit of my dad's dignity later, the salesman was a little embarrassed to say the least.

Then i went to another one, they treated me well, so i bought the car, then went back to the same dealership, made sure to make noise as i drove into the parking lot so they all saw me, then i went up and asked them what time they close their service dept cause i may need some parts in the future.lol

then i smiled and left.. bastards

Same car similar story. Was 21 and just out of college at the time. Everyone at Infiniti ignored me except for one little firey old lady who was months away from retirement. We shot the shit for awhile and she told me about her days at Lamborghini and how much a spoiler costs there. Needless to say I ordered a coupe from her that day.

Going to pick up a 740i the moment they touch U.S. shores. Let's see how I get treated this time around.

xxweekxx 03-10-2010 06:39 PM

yeah and infiniti is just $40k.. not like we talking about bmw m6 here or something.. stupid bastards..

3 years ago we walked into a hummer/ Mercedes dealer and walked out with 3 brand new hummers
from a dealer that I personally knew.

1 for each partner

the very next year my wife and I were looking for a new car
trying to figure out if it would be a Mercedes or a Jaguar we liked them both

I was at the office and my wife decided to take a drive down to Mercedes dealer
( SAME DEALER WE BOUGHT 3 HUMMERS FROM THE YEAR BEFORE )

she walked in dressed the way we always dress sweats blah blah
in her purse was 120k cash

the dealer completely snubbed her telling her it would be better to come back a different day they were to busy to show her a car.

She called me at work told me the story and within the next few hours we were driving

.
into the Mercedes dealer for me to bitch the manager out because of the treatment his salesman gave my wife..

funny how empowered people feel by money..
and the respect they demand, no doubt.

Waddymelon 03-10-2010 07:25 PM

I've had the same shit happen to me in Harley dealerships and Mercedes showrooms. I just go somewhere else. Worked out fine because I liked the BMW we bought much better.

Actually I don't think this is about respect because you have money. Everyone should be treated equally. Money doesn't make the person, the person makes the money.

When I was in the club business, I would treat my customers the same whether they were there having a beer, or if Leo Dicaprio was there. Which he was all the time.

People are People as long as they stay away from the tube sites. :Oh crap

Wagerboy 03-10-2010 08:54 PM

The funny thing here is 2 things...1) most car salesmen make ALOT more then the "bawlers" here. 2) for every rat dressed down "bawler" that has money to buy a car, 200 "real" rats come in...No loss at all, seriously.

Some dude said he went back to the dealer and the sales guy got fired. Guess what? No he didn't...They laughed at you thinking your flexing...

The BIG money people that come in with 150K in cash in a briefcase? Guess what pay cash dealer will lose anywhere from 1500-5000k on your loan loss. They rather not deal with cash buyers, not to mention the nightmare of the IRS forms needed.

Keep making your porn sites bawlers. Your better then car salesmen. They just make alot more then you.

WRONG!!! I know people that sell cars for a living. They actually don't make much.
But yes, the dealerships make more money financing cars then selling them cash. But that's not the point here if you read it.

With all due respect, CA Dave, I know quite a few myself and they make quite alot. I guess if you have no talent and are in a bad store, you wont make as much. I didnt miss the point of the thread, I said for every rat looking person that walks in with money, theres 200 that dont have money. But yes, I agree with this post 100%, just not when it comes to the car business. It's a bit of a different game in the car biz.

xxweekxx 03-10-2010 09:24 PM

show me a car salesman who makes 7 figs a year?

the point of this thread man is that you should not treat people like crap..

like i said, i fly first class and theres always some idiots asking me if im in the wrong line (cause im black and young)

Its not even how i dress really, i do dress nice, its just that they put 2 + 2 together, black, young, = broke, drug dealer, 5 kids..

Gets annoying ya know

Yeah you made your point. Your black. Well done. 7 figures is tough to reach in a dealership. Maybe .000001% of salesmen. same number applies to webmasters. Evens itself out a bit huh?

yea, not trying to gloat here at all.. point was that a man could be worth $100mil, and wear shorts and t shirt into a benz dealership, and the salesman shouldnt ignore him, cause he is basically flushing possible money down the toilet

100% agreed my friend. My point was mearly the attacks against salesmen. Like i said, for every 1 guy that has the money to buy looking dressed down, 200 that will come in wont have that money. Just dreamers bored or something. I agree that you shouldnt judge on appearence, but if Im selling big ticket items, its a warning sign.

Must be the market in your friends area or the brand they sell. All I hear is the car business is booming and dealerships are making alot of money right now. If I was you I would tell your friends to move to a good store or maybe find another job. I sure wouldnt want to be a Toyota store right now....

Great stories, nice to know I'm not alone...

To quote someone above, "I only dress up when I have to", I'm my own boss and I have a little money so I dress how I want, when I want (which is usually sweat pants haha!).

Anyway, when I was about a year or two into the business I popped into a sony store to check out the new camcorders, and the one I was interested in was in a showcase and only around $2500 if I recall, and I asked the sales lady if i could have a look at it (dressed in sweats from head to toe) she said, "no" and when i asked her why, she responded with, "its for security reasons", I told her she just lost a sale and walked out of the store... A moment after leaving the store I thought "fuck that!" and i went back and confronted her, asking for her business card because I was going to be calling the regional manager of sony in regards to "the incident" - With a cocky tone in her voice she said "sure" and handed me her business card, pointing out that she was a "Level 5 sales person" (or something like that, basically meaning she was the top sales person in the store)... I took the card, laughed and said, "as of that's going to matter when I'm finished" and left the store.

I called the store manager, briefed him on the incident and said I had no interest in discussing it with him and was only calling him to get the contact information for the regional manager, to which he responded by taking my information, contacting the regional manager and passing along my info. Surprisingly, about an hour later my phone rang and to my surprise it was the regional manager... I kept him on the phone for about an hour explaining what had happened and why it was so wrong... The mighty Level 5 sales woman was fired the next day... props to sony for listening to their customers.

6 years later (two days ago), I bought in full, a loaded 2010 CTS ($66K CAN) wearing $9 sweat pants from "army navy" (http://www.armyandnavy.ca) that had an ink stain on the crotch lol

Yeah that pretty much sums it up. It's a form of "cascading billing" for car salesmen. Had a few friends work as car salesmen at one point or another and they use this as a method of screening.

WebCompanyInc 03-11-2010 03:52 AM

yep same story here... six years ago in my 20's I walked into Reeves auto in Tampa with my mind set that I would be driving home in a super charged Range Rover

Black with braided hair with a white T shirt and air jordans on I was ignored bythe entire sales staff. Finally one of the receptionist asked me if I needed help and I told her I wanted to buy a white Range Rover in cash

she sent a saes guy to talk to me and from the start his whole attitude gave off a "you ae wasting my time energy"

I told him Iwasnt sure but was going to go grab a bite to eat and think about it.

When I came back this same sales guy looked right at me and completely ignored me although I had just told him 30 minutes earlier that I wuld be back.

after about 10 minutes another sales guy asked me if he could help me .. told him I wanted the showroom Range taken out so I could drive it

he was hesitant but did it anyway

I bought the truck in cash for 90k total with all the extras. The other guy admited he thought I was full of shit and he lost a grat sale

was my first range rover and I still have tha one also and that sales guy still works there and whenever I tke it in for service I make a point to make sure he sees me as a reminder

we have since purchased another Range Rover and a LR3 from the same dealership but never from that sales guy.

Godsmack 03-11-2010 04:03 AM

Yes i do have such story.

As some people here know Nylos is a close friend of mine and one day he wanted to buy a Jaguar so we went to the Jaguar dealer looking all casual to look at some models and we were in BUYERS MINDSET. We were all over one nice model and the salesperson didn't even come up to as until we started asking him questions about the car. He answered a few questions and than he said "yeah, everybody gotta have something to dream about".
Nylos and i looked at each other like WTF and we headed outside jumped in Nylos's Hummer and took off driving by the showroom window, the look of the salesperson's face was priceless. We ended up buying a Jaguar from another dealer.:thumbsup

I was a salesperson myself for many many years and i learned that judging people buy their looks is just plain stupid.. body language tells you about everything you need to know.

In Narita airport, dressed in shorts and t-shirt. There was a huge boarding line and they had already called first class boarding. I walked passed and several people were yelling at me to go to the back of the line. I said nothing, whipped out my first class boarding pass, got on the plane took a few xanax and woke up in chicago.:thumbsup

Raf1 03-11-2010 04:42 AM

all these stories are great when it turns the guy is rich and just looks like he has no money. The reality is that 99% of the time, you just waste 20-30 mintutes talking to some dude who just has nothing better to do with his time. This is usually how it is in my case, in the printing business. Most of the time you know straight from the start, how much a person is going to order and how much of a problem the order is going to be.
I've been wrong a couple of times in the last few years, but since I treat every customer well it hasn't been an issue.

You guys buying all these cars cash must be doing well so I'd assume you would do your share of hiring at some point--which brings up an interesting question. When someone shows up for a job interview dressed to the fives do you count that against them? I mean, we are talking about equality and not judging books by its cover so i'd call it a valid question here. ;)

I agree that it's crap to treat people this way, and it's happened to me in the past but I think there is a second perspective here that we aren't seeing is all.

I am good friends with the owners of almost every dealership in a affluent community. The one friend who owns the Chevrolet Dealership was telling me how all his salesman were hurting for sales, they don't make much and never do. He also told me he would see them out at night at the clubs acting like " bawlers " sitting in the VIP but knew they really couldn't afford it. At least with what they were making at the dealership. BTW this was in 2004 before the bottom fell out.

There may be one ore two salesman that do really well ( approaching six figures ) but that's only because they don't act like the salesman in this thread and treat EVERYONE as a potential sale and know what to do to close the deal. They are the exceptions.

The point of this thread is you can't judge a book by it's cover so there is no way ANY salseman can know how much money a new customer has until he finds out. If he wants to make a sale he better approach all 200 " rats " and through his sales approach weed out the tire kickers from the buyers. You don't do that with just a glance.
